Janet Jackson has been a star all her life, born into an iconic showbiz family. We first saw her spark on Good Times, and she followed that up with Different Strokes and Fame, but music was her destiny, and after a couple of ignored teen albums, she finally broke through in a enormous way with 1986′s Control, which completely redefined her career, and started her on the road to superstardom.
Today is her 48th birthday, so let’s pick her greatest single. It’s a
tough job, with 25 top ten hits (including 10 #1′s), but what is the
cream of the crop? Here are my top five:
5. RUNAWAY
YEAR: 1995
ALBUM: Design Of A Decade
CHART PEAK: #3
Exuberant first single from her first Greatest Hits album, it provided a great capper to ten years of growth as an artist.
4. WHEN I THINK OF YOU
YEAR: 1986
ALBUM: Control
CHART PEAK: #1
The third single from her classic breakthrough Control, it was her first #1 on the pop chart.
3. LOVE WILL NEVER DO WITHOUT YOU
YEAR: 1990
ALBUM: Rhythm Nation
CHART PEAK: #1
The seventh (and final) single from her mammoth Rhythm Nation, it became her fifth #1 song. The video introduced us to Antonio Sabàto, Jr. and Djimon Hounsou.
2. COME BACK TO ME
YEAR: 1990
ALBUM: Rhythm Nation
CHART PEAK: #2
Her greatest ballad, it’s a gorgeous, shimmering lament to a lost love
1. THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE
YEAR: 1987
ALBUM: Control
CHART PEAK: #14
The sixth single from Control, it was also the first from
the album not to hit the top five, but it’s may favorite Janet song.
It’s sexy, confident, and perfectly sums up what makes Janet so special.
