MTV VMAs 2014: Beyonce's Video Vanguard Award Performance

Wearing a bedazzled, rainbow-colored Tom Ford bodysuit throughout the
entirety of her performance, Queen Bey lit up the stage from her booty
poppin' moves to her killer vocals.

Starting off the set with the mid-tempo "Mine," Bey, 32, transitioned
into to favorites like "Drunk in Love" and "Partition," while also
including lesser-known songs like the sex jam "Rocket" and the
emotionally intense "Jealous."

While singing her hit "Drunk in Love," she was surrounded by dancers
covered in sparkling gold body paint in thongs and bras. After taking a
spin around a stripper pole during the lovably raunchy "Partition," the
noted feminist transitioned into her girl power anthem "Flawless."

She also sang a snippet of the Nicki Minaj "Flawless" remix,
in which she referenced the Jay Z/Solange Knowles elevator fight,
singing, "Of course sometimes s--t go down when there's a billion
dollars on an elevator."

Taking a turn for the emotional, the mother of Blue Ivy Carter, 2, then belted her song "Blue" while home videos of her daughter and husband Jay Z flashed behind her. She ended the performance singing her love song "XO," in a dedication to her many fans.

PHOTOS: Beyonce's best VMA moments

In December 2013, Beyonce released her fifth self-titled studio album
on iTunes without any promotion, smashing the site's digital download
records overnight. In January, she opened the Grammys with husband Jay Z
singing their duet "Drunk in Love," complete with a sexy chair dance.

Beyonce’s 2014 VMA Performance: Fearless, Feminist, Flawless, Family Time

There was no better option for a closing performance at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards
than the queen herself, Beyoncé. On Sunday night (August 25), she took
viewers on an emotional journey with a well-orchestrated medley from her
recent, self-titled album, that ended with tears as she accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from her husband Jay Z.

What more could we have asked for?

Bey’s set began on a very emotional note, with the cameras zoomed in
tightly on her face, as she sang “Mine” surrounded by dancers with
porcelain skin, and slowly transitioned into “Haunted.” Her first few
songs were the most soul-baring of the night, as she continued with “No
Angel” and “Jealous,” emphasizing the weight of all those lyrics. And
while those emotions came pouring out, the dancers around her went
through several outfit changes, to fit the mood of each track.

By the time Bey got to “Blow,” things started to heat up. For this
number, she and her dancers lined up cabaret style, with the word
“Cherry” lit up behind her in neon letters (you know, “turn that cherry
out”) and she really began to put her hips into it. With the lights
hitting that bedazzled fitted bodysuit, it was nothing short of
mesmerizing.

And, of course, when “Drunk in Love” came on the crowd really started
to lose their composure. Bey was posted up on a set of steps,
surrounded by dancers who were in headstands around her, only giving the
audience a great rare view…if you know what I mean. Eventually she
sauntered down the stage for that “surfboard” grind and the cameras cut
to Taylor Swift getting busy in the audience.

Photos: A History Of Beyonce At The VMAS

Aside from Taylor, “Orange is the New Black” star Laverne Cox was
arguably the most excited fan in The Forum, completely losing her mind
to every single track that was performed.

“Rocket” and “Partition” were next, and just like the sexy video for
the latter (which Bey said was inspired by a visit to the Crazy Horse
Cabaret in Paris), she performed some scintillating acrobatics on a
small platform, flipping over and whipping her hair to and fro and then
headed to the stripper poles.

There was still more left, though. Like “Flawless,” which was
the point in the show when Beyoncé really shook off all of the soulful
vibes and just went for all out breaking-it-down. On the song, she makes
an important feminist statement by sampling lines from Nigerian author
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and it was on bold display during her VMA
performance.

Lines from the poem were splashed across the screen in bold, pink
letters as she and her dancers took their positions in the dark. “We
teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller,” the
screen read. “We say to girls, ‘You can have ambition, but not too much.
You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you
will threaten the man.”

Now that she was putting it all out there, Bey also slipped in that line from the remix of “Flawless,”
where she declares that “of course sometimes sh– goes down when it’s a
billion dollars on the elevator,” in reference to the fight between Jay
Z and her sister Solange. At that point, we got another shot of Jay Z
and Blue Ivy sitting front row in the audience.

bey-royalfamily-kiss
After this Bey kept the crowd lifted with “Yonce,” and “XO,” and then
completed the night’s emotional arc with family footage playing behind
her as she performed “Blue.”

Jay and Blue were so proud, and we knew that because Hov was beaming
when he made his way onto the stage to present his wife with the Michael
Jackson Video Vanguard Award, crowning her “the best living
entertainer.” Beyoncé couldn’t stop the tears from flowing, especially
while her daughter was clapping up a storm on stage.

“I’m so full, I have nothing to say,” she said, all choked up. “I’m
filled with so much gratitude, I just thank God for this moment. I love
ya’ll so much. Blue I love you Blue, my beloved (Jay Z) I love you. My
fans, I love you. MTV, I love you, goodnight.”

Nicki Minaj Had A Wardrobe Malfunction Onstage At The VMAs... Explained

Nicki Minaj performed “Anaconda” at the 2014 VMAs, as part of a medley with Ariana Grande and Jessie J. She did not disappoint:

But after her solo “Anaconda” moment, when she re-emerged to do her verse on “Bang Bang,” something was wrong.

Jessie J didn’t seem to care.

Man, Nicki Minaj handled that wardrobe malfunction like a PRO. #VMAs
The Internet erupted on Sunday night after Nicki Minaj was seen clutching the front of her little black dress during the VMA-opening performance of "Bang Bang," with
many speculating that the "Anaconda" singer had experienced a major
wardrobe malfunction. Did she? Didn't she? The public (and this
reporting pool) was so confused about the situation that the term #DidNicki actually trended on Twitter shortly after the drama went down.

So what actually happened?

"We ran out of time getting the dressed zipped up," the performer said backstage later in the show.

VMAs pay tribute to Ferguson; Miley Cyrus swaps acceptance speech for homeless youth PSA

Recording artist/actor Common speaks onstage during the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. (Michael Buckner/Getty Images)
Between all the madness that generally takes place at the MTV Video Music Awards, the show tried to get serious this year.

First, hip-hop artist Common called for a moment of silence as a tribute to the horrors in Ferguson, Mo.,
in the aftermath of unarmed teenager Mike Brown being shot and killed
by police. Before presenting the award for Best Hip Hop Video to Drake,
Common delivered this speech:

For the past two weeks,
the eyes of the nation have been on Ferguson, Missouri. The people in
Ferguson and St. Louis and communities across the country have used
their voices to call for justice and change. To let everyone know that
each and every one of our lives matters. Hip hop has always been about
truth and has been a powerful instrument of social change from Melle Mel
to Public Enemy to Kendrick Lamar. Hip hop has always presented a voice
for the revolution. I want us all to take a moment of silence for Mike
Brown and for peace in this country and in the world.
Then,
later in the evening, Miley Cyrus won the Video of the Year award for
“Wrecking Ball” — technically the biggest prize of the night. Instead of
getting up on stage, she sent a homeless youth named Jesse to accept on
her behalf. Presenter Jimmy Fallon wound up helping Jesse, whose hands
were shaking so badly he could barely hold his written speech, as Cyrus
could seen with tears streaming down her face in the audience.

(on behalf of Miley Cyrus) for “Wrecking Ball.” (Mark Davis/Getty

Here were his remarks:

Thank you
all. My name is Jesse. I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6
million runaways and homeless youth in the U.S. who are starving, lost
and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I’m one of
these people. I’ve survived in shelters all over this city, I’ve cleaned
your hotel rooms, I’ve been an extra in your movies, I’ve been an extra
in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I
have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight.
Los Angeles entertainment capital has the largest population of homeless
youth in America. The music industry will make over $7 billion this
year, and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no
physical home. If you want to make a powerful change in the world right
now, please join us and go to Miley’s Facebook page. A dream you dream
alone is only a dream — but a dream we dream together is reality. Thank
you so much for your time.
The network also created this PSA:

Not everyone was so impressed by the segments: Making the rounds on Twitter
were screengrabs of the Kardashian/Jenner sisters looking very
uninterested during Common’s introduction, as Kylie played with her
phone, Kendall looked bored, and Kim adjusted her outfit.

Usher Teams with Nicki Minaj, Performs at MTV Video Music Awards

First, music's top Twerker performed alongside Ariana Grande for a rendition of "Bang Bang."

Then, Minaj brought out the big guns buns for a live
performance of "Anaconda," before later also joining Usher on stage for a
dance-filled version of "She Came To Give It To Me."

It included Usher bouncing his head off Nicki's butt. Seriously! Check out all the fun and raunchy moves now:

Other performances that stood out from the VMAs included Beyonce putting on an epic medley prior to being handed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard trophy, along with Taylor Swift performing "Shake It Off" for the first time.

As for the most important part of the night?

The red carpet fashion? Feast your eyes on these looks, readers:

Amber Rose at the VMAs

Maybe the VMAs Are A Feminist Conspiracy

Photo: Michael Buckner/Getty Images

The MTV Video Music Awards has long been vehicle for female
empowerment propaganda, from Madonna writhing in a wedding dress to
“Like a Virgin” in 1984 to Madonna kissing Britney Spears in a wedding
dress in 2003. This year, Beyoncé’s show-stopping 20-minute performance
spelled it out. Not only is Beyoncé a feminist--and, according to her
husband, the greatest living performer--the entire VMAs are a feminist
indoctrination program.

Consider the woman-glorifying evidence:

Nicki Minaj performed her ironic misandrist anthem “Anaconda” while getting humped by female dancer dressed as a dick joke. Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora also sang about being mean to boys.

Rapper Angel Haze advanced the interracialpansexualChipotle agenda by walking the red carpet with girlfriend Ireland Baldwin.

A Trojan condom commercial featured the woman on top, symbolizing woman's advantageous position in higher education and the postindustrial labor force, a.k.a. the End of Men.

Instead of perpetuating an oppressive beauty standard, Clean & Clear ran a
commercial telling young women to ignore their haters, a message that
was soon repeated in Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.”

Lastly, women won 10 out of 16 VMAs--or 63 percent of VMAs--despite being only 51% of humans. No one was required to put on pants to receive her award.

 -- The Cut

VMAs 2014: Shucks NO Shock?

Every summer, we gather around MTV’s Video Music Awards ready to rubberneck. But Sunday’s 31st annual telecast provided no suchsatisfaction. There were no electric shocks. No controversial
performances. No juicy trash talk. Yes, lots of booty, but none of it jiggling toward new frontiers.

Despite bouncy performances from rappers Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea and others,
the biggest surprise of the night was seeing an awards show that specializes in sensationalism being used to further social awareness.

Beyonce’s show-closing extravaganza positioned her in front of a giant video screen that read “FEMINIST.” Presenting the award for best hip-hop video, veteran rapper Common delivered some smart words on Ferguson. And Miley Cyrus mitigated her wild child image by inviting a young fan onstage to speak about his experiences with youth homelessness.
As the VMAs go, this was refreshingly humane stuff. And nobody had to douse themselves with a bucket of ice water.
Sadly, the show also reinforced the idea that pop music’s core value in 2014 is to help sell other stuff. After performing a dirty new disco ditty alongside Minaj, Usher popped up in a cola commercial. Katy Perry won the first trophy of the night, then appeared in an ad for cosmetics. And after some soft-rocking from Maroon 5, another one of the band’s songs soundtracked a car commercial where giant hamster scientists learn how to transform regular hamsters into sexy, human-babe-sized hamsters, which is wayyyy freakier than any Maroon 5 song will ever be. Alas.
Between the commercials, there were banal performances from ascendant British soul man Sam Smith, Nickelodeon graduate Ariana Grande, and emo boy band 5 Seconds of Summer, none of whom appeared to be having much fun.
And who knows how Taylor Swift was really feeling up there. Performing her new single “Shake It Off,” she assumed the defensive crouch depicted in the song’s lyrics, which portray her as a lowly pop outsider and a magnet for snark. Executing the song’s choreography, Swift scaled a platform, looked over the edge, then stepped back, as if chickening-out on the high dive. “I don’t care if it’s the VMAs,” she muttered into her microphone before the song’s finale. “I’m not jumping off of there.”
So the night’s biggest splash was made by Beyoncé, who closed the show by writhing through a 15-minute medley that smashed her most recent self-titled album into dazzling shards — a disjointed mini-concert for the Vine generation.
When it was over, husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy materialized to present Beyoncé with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award. Trading smiles and smooches, pop music’s first family looked happy up there.
Then fans flooded social media with breathless babble while detractors got ornery. But the Beyoncé binary doesn’t count as controversy, so see you next year.

Beyonce's 2014 VMA Performance Proves She & Jay Z Are Not Getting Divorced

Don't
hate yourself if you, like a million other people, believed with all of
your heart that Beyonce and Jay Z were headed for divorce court. With
so many rumors and changed song lyrics and news of all of Hova's other
girls and gossip about Bey getting "uncoupling" advice from none other
than Gwyneth Paltrow, it really seemed like they were kaput.
But Beyonce's legendary performance at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards changed all -- or at least many -- of our minds about the most famous couple in the world. After giving us an outstanding 15-minute performance, the star received a Michael Jackson Vanguard Award from her hubby and the loving and emotional moment that followed will probably squash divorce talk once and for all.

Not
only did Beyonce prove she is one of the most deserving performers in
MTV history to receive the Vanguard award -- running through songs from
her Beyonce album like it was no big thing -- but she also sent us a powerful message: we're welcome into her world, but up to a certain point. After that, it's all about Bey, Jay Z, and Blue Ivy.

While she was killing it during Drunk In Love, we got a
glance at her husband in the audience, who, with Blue on his lap, looked
absolutely in awe of his brilliant wife. And then the moment of truth:
Jay Z was given the task of gifting the major award to Beyonce and we
wondered whether he could pull it off considering how much these two
apparently loathe one another.

After calling her the "greatest living entertainer," he and Blue greeted Bey, who broke down in tears.
She gave Jay Z a sincere kiss -- you can't fake that kind of thing --
and locked her family in for a group embrace. Clapping for her mommy,
Blue looks happy and unaware of anything wrong between her parents,
which of course the tot should be whether they are having problems or
not.

So there you have it. Sure, it's possible these two are continuing to
keep up appearances because HBO invested a great deal in them with its
upcoming On the Run documentary. But this sweet moment, along
with other recent ones in which the Carter family was spotted out and
about together, is enough to convince me that, while they may have
marital issues like everyone else on earth, they are sticking together.

For now, at least.

Nicki Minaj Dancer Bitten by Snake During Anaconda Performance at 2014 MTV VMAs Rehearsal

Nicki Minaj, Snake
YouTube/Getty Images

Yikes!

On Friday, one ofNicki Minaj's backup dancers got bitten by a snake on stage while the rapper performed her new song "Anaconda" during a rehearsal for the 2014 MTV Video Music
Awards. The animal is a 6-foot boa constrictor, E! News has learned.

The female performer, a contortionist, was treated on the scene by a medic and then transported to a hospital,MTV Newsreported. It said the snake, a Dumeril's boa named Rocky, bit the woman on the
inside of her left hand and quoted the director of production safety for Viacom Media Networks, which owns the cable channel, as saying that her injury was not life-threatening.

The snake's handler had been watching the performance and after the incident, it was halted and Minaj rushed to the dancer to check on her,MTV Newssaid.

"They resumed rehearsals minus the boa after the incident," a source told E! News.

(Pictured above: A Demuril's boa, which was not involved in the incident.)

The animal has been used in performances for 15 years, MTV News
said. Dumeril's boas are non-venomous, originated in Madagascar, feast
mainly on rodents and are generally non-aggressive. When they do attack,
they typically wrap their bodies around their prey.

A different snake, either another boa or a python, will take Rocky's place during Minaj's live performance at the VMAs, MTV News reported. The ceremony takes place on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

Other performers include Beyoncé and Iggy Azalea, who also suffered a mishap during a VMAs rehearsal—the rapper fell off the stage. Presenters include the likes of Kim Kardashian and pop star Demi Lovato, while Miley Cyrus is also set to make an appearance.

Earlier this week, Minaj released a very racy music video for "Anaconda," which shows her getting frisky with fellow rapper Drake. The song samples Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1992 hit rap song "Back Got Back" (which he still performs) and is featured on her upcoming third studio album, The Pink Print.
