Angkor Wat's Nude Tourist Photography Problem

Anat Givon / Associated Press

Cambodia’s most popular tourist attraction — the complex of
ancient temples that includes Angkor Wat — is suffering from a form of
overexposure: At least five foreign visitors have been arrested and
deported this year for taking nude photos at the sacred sites.

Authorities have no tolerance for people stripping down at Angkor
Archaeological Park, a sprawling, centuries-old UNESCO World Heritage
Site that drew 2 million visitors last year. The incidents are also
upsetting to ordinary Cambodians, for whom the Khmer-era complex holds
enormous spiritual and historical significance.

“Angkor Wat is the most famous sacred … temple in Cambodia, where
everyone — not only tourists but also Cambodians themselves — has to pay
respect,” said Rattanak Te, an administrative assistant who lives in
Phnom Penh, the capital. “It definitely upsets me and all Cambodians,
because outsiders will think we — Cambodian people — are careless and do
not take good care of this World Heritage (site) by allowing these
tourists to do such an unacceptable act.”

This month, guards arrested two American sisters after seeing them
snap photos of each other’s naked backsides in the temple of Preah Khan,
said Kerya Chau Sun, spokeswoman for the Apsara Authority, which
manages the temple complex in Siem Reap, in northwestern Cambodia.
Lindsey Adams, 22, and Leslie Adams, 20, both of Prescott, Arizona, were
each sentenced to a six-month suspended sentence, a fine of 1 million
riel ($250), deportation and a four-year ban from the country.

In January, three French men in their 20s were deported after they
were caught taking nude photographs at Angkor complex. Another photo
showing a topless woman at the site has circulated on social media, but
officials believe it is fake, according to Chau Sun. Three tourists were
also caught riding a motorbike naked near Phnom Penh in January,
according to local media.

Reached via email, one of the Frenchmen, Rodolphe Fourgeot, said he
did not want to talk about the case. He said it demonstrates “endemic
corruption” in Cambodia but did not elaborate.

A message on a cellphone listed for Lindsey Adams said the voicemail
was full and not accepting messages. She also didn’t respond to a
Facebook message. A message was left on a cellphone number listed for
the sisters’ mother.

This year’s incidents were not firsts for the Angkor temples, but
Chau Sun said earlier attempts by tourists to get naked were thwarted.

Signs at the temples and ticketing booths urge visitors to behave
respectfully, and Chau Sun said the Apsara Authority plans to add
posters warning them that taking nude photographs can lead to arrest and
deportation.

“As a Cambodian, I am hurt … I think especially to the poor
Cambodians saving to be able to come across the country to pray at
Angkor,” she said. “They don’t understand why people could behave like
that.”

Angkor Archaeological Park is the biggest tourist draw for this
Southeast Asian country, which still feels the effects of the Khmer
Rouge, the fanatical communist regime behind a reign of terror that left
an estimated 1.7 million people dead from 1975 to 1979.

The massive Angkor complex is in a sense a proud counterpoint to that
painful legacy. It contains the remains of capitals of the Khmer
Empire, which existed from the 9th to the 15th centuries and at its peak
controlled most of Southeast Asia. For a time, Angkor was among the
world’s biggest cities.

The temples are renowned for their architecture and art, with
countless intricate carvings, including semi-nude spirits known as
apsaras. Angkor Wat is the largest and best preserved of the structures.

The temples are much more than stone ruins for most Cambodians, said
Trevor Sofield, a professor of Tourism at the University of Tasmania in
Australia. They are places of Buddhist worship as well as a symbol of
the Khmer heritage, he said. He added that the Apsara Authority and
UNESCO should focus on educating the public about the living sacred
nature of the site in addition to its historical characteristics.

Angkor is not the only world-renowned site that has had to deal with
nude tourists. In 2014, officials at Peru’s Machu Picchu said they were
increasing surveillance after visitors were caught taking nude
photographs or running through the ancient site naked.

Amichay Rab, a 32-year-old accountant from Tel Aviv, Israel, was one
of those tourists who posed in the buff. Rab documented his nude
escapades while on a nine-month trip through Central and South America
on his blog. Many of the photos were taken early in the morning before
there were crowds, he said, and local residents often snapped the photos
for him.

“I was anxious sometimes but was never afraid (of) getting in trouble
as I was very discreet,” he said. “I was waiting for the right moment
in order to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.”

Cambodian Mollyda Keo said people there recognize that different
cultures and societies have differing views on the body and what is
deemed acceptable. Cambodian women, for example, will only swim in a
T-shirt and shorts but are used to seeing Western women in bikinis, she
said.

She said posing naked at the temples crosses the line.

“I just feel they don’t respect the culture,” she said. “You come from another culture. You should respect ours.”

How you can fly by private jet for less than the cost of budget airline

They are regarded as toys of the wealthy elite, but flying on a
private jet could cost less than you think - even beating the price of a
budget airline ticket.

An industry expert has revealed that by
booking a last-minute trip when a plane is 'repositioning',
holidaymakers can snap up a private jet experience for a fraction of the normal rate.

Jet
company PrivateFy is encouraging travellers to buy up 'empty legs',
flying with a jet that would otherwise be travelling without passengers,
when tickets could be available for as little as £138 each way.

Scroll down for video

More and more people are paying for flights on private jets that are often available at competitive prices

By making the most of an empty private jet and negotiating directly
with the owner, the company claims groups can enjoy all the perks of
elite travel, without the sky-high prices.

Adam Twidell, CEO of PrivateFly, explained: 'An empty leg comes about when a private jet is repositioning.

'As the aircraft is flying empty, the owner or operator will often be
happy to sell this one-way leg at a big discount – often a fraction of
the full price.

'Europe’s private jet traffic sees a significant
peak in the summer, so there are many more empty leg flights available,
and amazing deals to be had.'

With
flexibility around what date you travel, and with a group large enough
to offset the one-off chartering fee, everyday Britons are travelling at
rates which can rival or better those of the budget airlines.

A
brief search today on private jet price comparison website Victor
revealed you and six friends could travel from London to Corsica on
Thursday - on board a Hawker 400XP - for just £1,650.

That equates to just £235 per person.

Mr Twidell said: 'Some of
our flights this week beat their airline one-way equivalents. Deals
include London to Cannes for £171 per person and London to Paris for
£138 per person.

'Long
haul empty legs are also available further in advance that can beat
first class fares, including London to Hong Kong in a Gulfstream GIV for
£3,750 per person.'

However, Clive Jackson, the chief executive of Victor, told The Sunday Times that empty-leg flights could be cancelled if the plans of the person chartering the plane at full price changed.

He
said: 'It is an unregulated industry and that worries me. There are no
obligations from the person selling you that plane as to what they have
to disclose.

'Beware of the fact that an empty leg can get
cancelled an hour before you are due to fly on it and you have no
redress whatsoever.'

Mr Twidell added: 'If people are prepared to
book last minute and travel as a group, the cost per person can be less
than business class – or even low cost airlines in some cases.

'They
are usually one-way flights and while a return flight can sometimes be
matched up, others enjoy a private jet experience in one direction, and
make their own way home. Private jets don’t have to just be for
billionaires, VIPs and rock stars.'

How to write a complaint letter - Richard's Blog

complaint letter
Having once received what many regard as the world’s best complaint letter, I was tickled to see another brilliant note to a different airline.

I phoned the customer who wrote the above note to apologise and thank him for his letter after he experienced a less than perfect culinary experience on board one of our planes. It is important to take customer feedback on board in order to improve – and also to be able to laugh at yourself.

With that in mind, here is an open letter to Caribbean airline LIAT, written by Arthur Hicks, who also happens to be a great tennis pro.

Dear LIAT,

May I say how considerate it is of you to enable your passengers such an in-depth and thorough tour of the Caribbean.

Most other airlines I have travelled on would simply wish to take me from point A to B in rather a hurry. I was intrigued that we were allowed to stop at not a lowly one or two but a magnificent six airports yesterday. And who wants to fly on the same airplane the entire time? We got to change and refuel every step of the way!

I particularly enjoyed sampling the security scanners at each and every airport. I find it preposterous that people imagine them all to be the same. And as for being patted down by a variety of islanders, well, I feel as if I’ve been hugged by most of the Caribbean already.

I also found it unique that this was all done on “island time,” because I do like to have time to absorb the atmosphere of the various departure lounges. As for our arrival, well, who wants to have to take a ferry at the end of all that flying anyway? I’m glad the boat was long gone by the time we arrived into Tortola last night — and that all those noisy bars and restaurants were closed.

So thank you, LIAT. I now truly understand why you are “The Caribbean Airline.”

P.S. Keep the bag. I never liked it anyway.

As a colleague said: “I guess this is why LIAT is reputed to stand for Languishing In Airport Terminals!”

But seriously, making customer service key to your company will keep your employees motivated and your customers happy. This in turn ensures enduring loyalty, business success and a better experience for everyone.

Summer Suitcase: Tips for Packing Lightly

packing.jpeg

Whether you're trying to avoid checked bag fees or heavy lifting, packing lightly doesn't have to be difficult. Especially in summer, a few tips can help you limit your luggage.

I really enjoy packing, which I guess is due to a combination of trip anticipation and inner organizational neat freak. In packing to travel abroad and domestically, I have learned how to cut back on what I include. Here are some guidelines I find helpful.

Start early: For a trip that's a week or longer, I typically get my suitcase out two or three days before I'm leaving. It helps me get into travel mode early, which means I'll have time to think of things like laundry and outfits.

Make a list: My mom recently brought up that when my brother and I were little, she made a point of teaching us how to pack our own bags. List-making was always the first step to doing it efficiently.

Stick to a few versatile pieces of clothing and pairs of shoes: Choose colors and patterns that will mix and match easily so that you'll be able to wear each piece more than once. This forethought reduces how much you'll pack and can make getting dressed easier. For women, dresses are pretty foolproof. Include things that can transition from casual to dressier; for shoes, think loafers for men or ballet flats for women. (And I never pack more than three pairs.)

Think about outfits: Similarly, you'll end up bringing less stuff if you spend a few minutes planning outfits. By having incorporated versatile tops and bottoms, you'll still have options to choose from depending on your mood when you're traveling. Women can include a few staple pieces of jewelry, which won't take up much space but can change a look.

Dress your heaviest onboard: I travel wearing my bulkier items, which for airplanes in the summer includes pants and the only cardigan I'm bringing.

Learn what you don't have to pack: To save suitcase space you can easily forgo many items, particularly hair dryers and most toiletries. Hotels and hosts typically will oblige, and, if need be, you can pick up toiletries at a drugstore. And in general remember that when it comes down to it, very few things (e.g. prescriptions and contacts) are essential.

Go for light reading: I love to read while traveling and try to stick to paperbacks under 300 pages or else magazines. At those times, I avoid tomes (I'm looking at you, The Brothers Karamazov.)

A Tip To Enhance Your Noise Canceling Headphones….....Travel Tips

For those of you who travel with your trusty Bose QC’s, Sennheiser, Sony or any other noise canceling headphone, try this the next time you’re flying. This idea creates about as much noise elimination as you will ever have on a flight (yes, including the teething baby sitting in the first row of economy while you are in the last row of First….ask me how I know). It almost gives you a sense of vertigo with the silence while still travelling at 350-400mph!

What I have discovered is by combining the strengths of 2 technologies, I’ve virtually eliminated background noise and dramatically improved the sound quality that I get from my iPad. What I have been doing is using my earbuds (Bose Mie2i’s) and my noise canceling headphones (Bose QC15) in tandem. It wont matter what brand of earbuds or noise canceling headset you use but the difference will amaze you. I basically insert my earbuds as I normally would, and then cover them with the Noise Canceling Headphones. In the case of the Bose Headphones, I remove the cable from the headset since I don’t need it and just turn them on for their noise canceling ability while using the earbuds for the music input. If you can’t detach your wire for the the headphone, simply coil it up and attach it to the side of your headset with a zip tie.

This accomplished a few things for me. It dramatically improved the sound quality by improving both bass and treble and it also eliminated what I would say is about 95% of the background noise.

Yesterday was a perfect example. My wife and I were traveling home from SNA to GRR and during our SNA-ORD leg I was seated in the last row of 1st (3B on a CO 737), and behind me was a baby having trouble with teething. She cried for about 70% of the flight. I only ever noticed the screaming when I took off my headset to speak to my wife (who I couldn’t hear at all with the headset/headphone combo on) or the flight attendant during meal service.

The drawback is that you need to carry another piece of equipment on board, but since earbuds are such a small item that fits into the headphone case anyway, it seems like a small inconvenience for what amounts to almost total elimination of ambient noise when you are on an airplane. You’ll also gain more battery life from your noise canceling headphones since you’re not using them for the music. Try it next time you’re on board……

Delta cutting international routes in 2012

Faced with "poorly performing" routes and an uncertain economic future, Delta has announced that they are trimming six international destinations from their Atlanta hub in 2012. One of the destinations, Shanghai, has been an on-again, off-again operation with limited service (currently only 2x weekly). The other destinations being cut – Athens, Copenhagen, Moscow, Prague and Tel Aviv – were all seasonal destinations which are not being reinstated as originally expected in the Summer ’12 season. Oh, and the timing of these cuts is a bit of a smack at the ATL airport authority. The airport’s new international facility is scheduled to open in 2012 right as demand is apparently drying up.

A few seasonal destinations from New York City are also being cut by Delta, including Manchester, U.K.; Budapest, Hungary; and Berlin.

But it isn’t all cuts for Delta. They are picking up the slack for SkyTeam and anti-trust alliance partner Air France, operating the Seattle – Paris route starting in March the day after Air France leaves the market. On that route it is most likely a fleet utilization issue as the two carriers share profits and expenses on many transatlantic routes thanks to the ATI arrangement. Delta will also be adding service between Detroit and Paris, likely for similar reasons.

There’s a lot more red on that map than green.

Delta to pick up Air France route from Sea-Tac to Paris

Air France will leave the Puget Sound airline market next spring when it calls quits to its Sea-Tac-Paris route.

Air France will leave the Puget Sound airline market next spring when it calls quits to its Sea-Tac-Paris route.

But this area’s nonstop connection to France won’t be lost. Air France’s SkyTeam alliance partner, Delta Air Lines, will pick up that route March 25, the day after Air France abandons it.

Air France will have served Sea-Tac for nearly five years when it leaves. Its first flight from Sea-Tac to Paris was on June 11, 2007.

Air France is struggling with higher fuel prices and reduced customer demand. The airline’s earnings fell by 31 percent in the third quarter. The company has told analysts to expect a loss for the year.

Delta has made Sea-Tac a West Coast hub for foreign travel with flights from here to Osaka and Tokyo in Japan and Beijing in China. The airline also flies from Sea-Tac to Amsterdam where Air France/KLM has a hub. Next spring it will also fly to Air France’s Paris hub, Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Air France had flown an Airbus jet on the route, an A330. Delta will fly a Boeing 767-300.

A320's sharkets latest in Airbus quest for narrowbody winglets

Media_httpwwwflightgl_tijzj

The original A320 prototype rolled out of a hangar in Toulouse this morning, sporting Airbus-designed winglets or "sharkets", which will enter service with Air New Zealand starting next year. The coming flight test evaluations represent a near-final configuration in a long series of evaluations undertaken by Airbus to take its original wing fence design and replace it with a full-fledged winglet. The wing fence design was first introduced with the A320-200 model in November 1988.

Airbus returned to evaluations of wingtip treatments for the A320 family in early 2006, announcing it would flight test two designs. The first, a standard angled winglet and the second and a parabolic blended winglet design from Winglet Technologies. The angled winglet was flight tested in April 2006 and the parabolic design followed on MSN001 in July of that same year.
Airbus turned to Aviation Partners for a better winglet design after the 2006 angled and parabolic trials failed to achieve the desired improvement in performance. The Seattle-based Aviation Partners is better known for the its joint venture with Boeing, providing winglets for the 737, 757 and 767 family aircraft. The company offered a scimitar blended winglet to Airbus for the A320 family, flight testing the design in December 2008.

JetBlue, eager to get its hands on the fuel saving winglets for its flee, lent an aircraft to Airbus for flight testing of both the angled and parabolic winglets designs during the initial trials on MSN2755 in June and September 2006, as well as the Aviation Partners scimitar design aboard MSN1904 in January 2010.

Airbus made its winglet plan official with its selection of its own design at the 2009 Dubai Air Show, branding its own configuration as "sharklets". At June's Paris Air Show, Airbus also agreed to evaluate a retrofit winglet program for existing A320 family aircraft, though few details of the program have been firmed up.

Expert Flyer Introduces Free Account with Seat Alerts

Expert Flyer is a web-based service that lets you see availability of flights, look up fare rules, search for award space (on a limited set of airlines) and even have their system automate searches and email you when space opens up. That’s the most useful and unique offering they have in my opinion.

The system also has ‘seat alerts’ — you book a flight but can’t get the seat you want, maybe only middle seats are available or perhaps you’re flying United and you want an economy plus aisle but no economy plus aisle seats are available. Or maybe you’re looking for an exit row, but all the exit row seats are full. Expert Flyer will keep searching for the seats you specify to open up and email you when they do, which frequently they will especially on domestic flights because the people in the seats you want may be elite members ahead of you in the upgrade queue — when their upgrades clear, their coach seat opens, and this gives you an advantage in grabbing the seat they had previously held.

I find it worth the $99 annual fee for premium membership, which includes all of their functionality and plenty of automated alerts. They have long offered a 5-day free trial so that you can test out the system before committing.

Today they announced on Milepoint the introduction of a free account. It’s pretty limited, but will be useful to some.

Free Account:

  • With the Free account, you can only create Seat Alerts
  • 1 Active Seat Alert at a time is included with the Free account
  • This 1 included free alert can use the Any Window Seat, Any Aisle Seat, or Any Seat alert options. The Any Exit Row Seat, Any Two Seats Together, or Specific Seat alert options require a paid Seat Alert which is $.99
  • Additional Active Seat Alerts can be purchased for $.99 each and include all alert options.
  • If you sign up for a Free Account to start, you can at any time click the Upgrade button that you’ll see after you log-in to start a 5-Day trial of our Premium service, or to reactivate your Basic or Premium subscription if you already had your 5-day trial.

Amtrak, Continental breaking up; a hint for others?

Continental and Amtrak have been partners for many years, offering the ability to earn OnePass miles on certain routes in the Northeast Corridor as well as the ability to move points between both programs at a 1:1 rate. There are a number of incredibly attractive awards in the Amtrak Guest Rewards program and the fungibility of points between the two programs was a great benefit for members of both. That relationship is coming to an end at the end of the year.

The move is tied to the expiry of the OnePass program as the new United Airlines moves to their new MileagePlus program. Not too much of a surprise there as the partnership is with a program that will be dying. According to Amtrak, they are trying to keep the relationship alive with the new MileagePlus, but that deal has not yet been finalized so they are warning members now of the impending change according to UnRoadWarrior.

This announcement opens as many new questions as it provides answers.

Currently there is reciprocity between the Amtrak and Continental lounge memberships. But that is ending in February and there is not yet a finalized agreement to continue it. Amtrak’s top tier elites also get the lounge benefit and there have been many issues getting it honored in the newly re-branded United Clubs.

There’s also the relationship between Continental and Virgin Atlantic. Back when they didn’t have access to Heathrow the partnership was great for Continental. Now that they do have access to Heathrow – and flights from 6 US gateways – the value of that relationship is certainly lessened. And United has never had that partnership as they had the Heathrow slots. The two carriers both had arrangements with Emirates but both killed them. There’s also Eva on the Continental side (though they’ve applied to become a Star Alliance member) and Qatar on the United side.

Lots of open questions that still need answers. Perhaps this move with Amtrak is a hint. Or not. Nothing like the joys of speculation with minimal data to support a claim.

NAIA1: The Fine Art of Neglect

(Subtitle: Troubled Scenes from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1)

I usually travel abroad on Philippine Airlines so rarely do I get a glimpse of NAIA Terminal 1. On this trip though, I got a promo ticket via EVA Air. I traveled alone and I had a lot of time to look around. I just wanted to take a photo of the bathroom to see if there were positive results from the online clamor to get it renovated. But photographing that led me to inspect the stained chairs which brought my focus to the dirty carpets. After that, I couldn't stop, everywhere I looked there was soot, grime, and third-world solutions. Much has been said about the need to fix this historical eyesore, but I'll let these shots shout for me.
