Ben Affleck Injured on ‘Batman v Superman’ Set?

Working
on an action movie can be physically-demanding for actors, and in some
cases it leads to an injury or two along the way. Earlier this year,
Harrison Ford was forced to miss two months of principle photography on Star Wars: Episode VII as he recuperated from a broken leg.

While Ford is now set to resume filming,
the star of a different highly-anticipated tent-pole project may have
hurt himself on set. That would be Ben Affleck, who’s playing
Batman/Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Star Magazine (hat tip to Batman-News) is reporting that the Oscar winner suffered a shoulder strain as shooting on Batman v. Superman continues. As Star
is a tabloid, one may question the validity of their claims, but the
video above does indeed show Affleck favoring his left shoulder while
speaking with a person who appears to be a doctor (cut to the 55 second
mark).

This isn’t the first time Affleck has been rumored to be injured while the Man of Steel followup is in production. When the film was delayed several months back,
it was rumored to be as a result of Affleck damaging his ribs while
skiing, though a Warner Bros. exec denied that was the case.

The
42-year-old’s shoulder condition seems to be so severe that his stunt
double was required to complete tasks such as lifting a small child, as
shown in the second set video (above). Affleck was apparently even sent
home from the set in order to recover.

Obviously, this setback is nowhere near as serious as the one that
sidelined Ford, but fans will no doubt be wondering how this development
affects the BvS shooting schedule.

The good news is that Affleck was seen on set just two days after
suffering the injury. Medical is advising him to take it easy for the
time being, but sources say he “can act” in scenes that feature Bruce Wayne and not the Caped Crusader. It’s just the stunt work that will have to wait.

If true, this bodes well for Snyder and his team, as they are aiming
to conclude production this November. By all accounts, Affleck should be
able to handle dialogue-heavy scenes that don’t ask for any heavy
lifting while the stunt double fills out the Batsuit for the next few
days.

Given that Wayne’s face is largely obscured by the cowl, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if Affleck didn’t do all of the fights himself. It looks like the show will go on as planned.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewill be in theaters March 25, 2016.

Iron Man, Batman and the innovation superhero

This film publicity image released by Disney-Marvel Studios shows Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts with in a scene from "Iron Man 3." (AP Photo/Disney, Marvel Studios)If you say “innovation” (which we should, apparently, do even more sparingly than before, but more on that later), then it’s not surprising that, especially this week, the words “Iron Man” will be in close proximity.

That’s right, Tony Stark & Co. are back in “Iron Man 3,” which critics have largely heralded as a rip-roaring, action-packed romp of a good time. WTOP film critic Jason Fraley offers a glowing review, writing simply: “Take note, Marvel: This is the direction you need to go.”
Vibe’s Kevin Clark writes that the entire Iron Man franchise may go down in history as “Marvel’s best ever.” One of the more interesting reviews, which is really more of an analysis of the plot’s deeper questions (well, as deep as an action film can go), appears in comic-book form over at Wired. Laura Hudson, Jim Rugg and Thomas Orzechowski collaborated to create the illustrated review/analysis of the film, with Hudson’s writing combining with Rugg’s artistic talents and Orzechowski’s lettering.
This film publicity image released by Disney-Marvel Studios shows Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in a scene from "Iron Man 3." (AP Photo/Disney, Marvel Studios)

Wired, overall, has a pretty comprehensive repository of Iron Man coverage, with a timeline of Iron Man suits over the past 50 years and, my personal favorite, Graeme McMillan’s tour through what it would take to create your own Iron Man. But is Iron Man really the superhero of choice for the innovation set? Yes, the suit is jaw-droppingly complex, and it helps when you have billions (trillions?) in R&D funding at your disposal to perfect your idea. Being a seemingly unbridled genius doesn’t hurt, either. But let’s set aside the Marvel world for a second and travel on over to D.C. Comics to consider another widgets-and-gadgets superhero. That’s right, what about Batman? He’s rich, smart and fueled by an almost singular desire to fight crime, and boy does he have an arsenal of creative tech at his disposal: Granted, Bruce Wayne doesn’t tinker with the technology himself, at least not to the extent Stark does. That damages his chances of unseating Stark as the innovation superhero of choice. But sometimes even financial backers are key to great innovation. Think venture capitalists and angel investors — people with means and a shared passion or common goal. They can be a critical bridge between a great idea and its transformation into a great product — or evil-obliterating weapon. While Batman isn’t necessarily creating the tech himself, he’s certainly doing his part to finance its development.
In this file film image provided by Warner Bros., Christian Bale portrays Bruce Wayne and Batman in a scene from "The Dark Knight Rises." The Dark Knight Rises" stayed atop the box office for the second straight weekend, making just over $64 million. But it's lagging behind the staggering numbers of its predecessor, 2008's "The Dark Knight." (AP PHoto/Warner Bros., File)

Then there’s the question of innovative problem-solving: Who does it better? Stark, arguably, takes on the process twice over in both developing his suit and then manipulating it against technologically daunting bad guys. Batman, on the other hand, leverages complex technologies created by others to hold his own alongside the likes of Superman. Ah, but then there’s Thor…
It’s the weekend — one that arguably belongs to Iron Man. But if you have some time and are looking for an interesting discussion over dinner (or in the comments section), ask your friends: Who in the world of innovation — Batman or Iron Man — comes out on top?
For what it’s worth, in at least one fight, Batman’s winning.
Have a great weekend, and if you watch “Iron Man 3,” let us know what you think in the comments — and, of course, who reigns as the innovation superhero.

Is Warner Bros. Planning A Batman Reboot Film For 2016?

OK … so The Dark Knight Rises is STILL in movie theaters but today we are hearing that plans are in the works to reboot the Batman film franchise in just a few short years. While this may sound grossly unnecessary on the surface, a rebooted Batman series is actually a good idea … and let me tell you why. For years, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have been trying to find a way to bring the superhero group The Justice League to the big screen. After the huge success of Marvel Comics bringing their superhero group The Avengers to the silver screen, it makes sense that DC is now anxious to get the ball rolling. Christopher Nolan has said that he is done making Batman films … but Batman is one of the key members of The Justice League. In order for WB and DC to move forward with a Justice League movie, they need a new Batman … which is where the reboot comes in.

We have some more news to share with you, and this time it is in regards to the reboot of the Batman franchise. Previously, news came out about the Justice League Movie being written by Will Beall, and we were informed that the upcoming Man of Steel movie would be spearheading a new DC shared universe. With The Dark Knight Rises being the last of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, Warner Bros. is obviously looking to reboot the Batman franchise. I’m told that a new Batman movie might be slated for 2016 following the Justice League Movie, and it will not be an origin story (like Amazing Spider-Man), but will feature a Batman who is entering his second year as a hero. The film may also be called “The Batman,” though I can’t be sure on that as the 2004 animated series was of the same title which featured a Batman in his third year. Also, this new Batman will be part of the same shared DC Universe that features the Justice League Movie as well as having Henry Cavill in the role of Superman in Justice League and subsequent sequels to the Man of Steel.

I know that a LOT of people will bristle at the idea of a new Batman film franchise because, really, can anyone outdo Christopher Nolan? No. But if a Justice League film is ever gonna happen, there needs to be a new Batman. With Man of Steel leading the way, the plan appears to work on a series of stand alone films based on Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and other members of The Justice League so that film can get made. Conversely, a Justice League film can come relatively soon and then spin-off films for the various characters may follow. Superman and Batman are the leaders of The Justice League, so they need to be cemented in place for a Justice League film to happen. The idea of a reboot so soon may sound terrible but, in the long run, it may be necessary.

Where was the Joker in The Dark Knight Rises?

Media_httpwwwliveforf_kycaa

Christopher Nolan had always said that, out of respect for Heath Ledger, the Joker would not feature in The Dark Knight Rises.
“We’re not addressing The Joker at all. That is something I felt very strongly about in terms of my relationship with Heath and the experience I went through with him on ‘The Dark Knight.’ I didn’t want to in any way try and account for a real-life tragedy. That seemed inappropriate to me.”
A perfectly good reason.
Possible spoilers ahead.
However, after watching Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises it does seem odd that there is not even a mention of the Joker.
In the chaos Bane causes in Gotham – releasing all the prisoners in Blackgate Prison etc – it makes no sense that absolutely nobody mentions the Joker. With all the problems the Joker caused you would think Bruce or Gordon would at least say something along the lines of, “If that laughing clown gets back out there….”

It looks as if the official novelization of the film by Greg Cox does mention the Joker.
“Now that the Dent Act had made it all but impossible for the city’s criminals to cop an insanity plea, it (Blackgate Prison) had replaced Arkham Asylum as a preferred location for imprisoning both convicted and suspected felons. The worst of the worst were sent here, except for the Joker, who, rumor had it, was locked away as Arkham’s sole remaining inmate. Or perhaps he had escaped. Nobody was really sure. Not even Selina.”
That is all we needed in the film.
Do you think there should have been some mention of the Joker in the film?
Then of course there is this piece of fan art which looks like a story board from the film.

Familiar Faces in 'Dark Knight Rises' - Who Was That Guy?

dark-knight-rises-batman

Sure as he knows how to do anything else, Christopher Nolan knows how to put a cast together. He's made three comic book movies now filled with Academy Award-winning talent like Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard and more. Indeed, the late Heath Ledger even won a posthumous Oscar for his turn as Joker in "The Dark Knight."

But that doesn't even speak to the smaller roles that populate Nolan's Batman movies. No matter how seemingly unimportant the character, the groundbreaking filmmaker always selects faces that make you stop and say, "Wait, it's that guy!"

Make no mistake, "The Dark Knight Rises" is filled with plenty of "that guys." Here's a rundown on some of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearances from actors you know and love, even if you don't know that you know them. Spoilers ahead!

» "The Dark Knight Rises" begins with the explosive IMAX sequence that debuted months ago, so you've had plenty of time to connect who plays the CIA operative in that climactic scene. For the latecomers, that's Aiden Gillen, best known to HBO subscribers as the smirking Littlefinger on "Game of Thrones." Viewers with a longer memory of HBO also know Gillen as Mayor Carcetti from "The Wire," widely agreed upon as one of the very best television shows in history.

» Another actor from Gillen's "Wire" days has a brief turn in "Rises." Actor Robert Wisdom, who appears in Nolan's last Batman movie as a soldier on the outskirts of a besieged Gotham City, played a pivotal role on seasons three and four of the Baltimore-set crime drama as Bunny Colvin, a police officer presiding over the experimental safe zone known by inner city kids as Hamsterdam. Wisdom also had a role on the third season of Fox's breakout thriller "Prison Break" playing Lechero, the inmate overlord of a virtually lawless Panamanian prison.

» Two other "Prison Break" veterans show up in "Rises," both of them on the right side of the law this time. First is actor Wade Williams, who starred on the Fox drama as brutish correctional officer Brad Bellick; he gets a promotion in "Rises," serving as warden of Gotham City's premier prison. Keeping thugs behind those bars is Reggie Lee, who plays one of John Blake's most frequently seen GCPD allies. He played Bill Kim, an operative working for the shadowy organization The Company, during the show's second season.

» (Wisdom, Williams and Lee are not the first "Prison Break" alums to appear in a Nolan Batman movie, either. William Fichtner, who starred as antihero Alex Mahone on the con drama for three seasons, played the ill-fated banker in the Joker-heavy "Dark Knight" prologue. But if you consider Fichtner a "that guy," I hate you. He's awesome in everything. Let's move on.)

» There's another cop who has dealings with Blake in "Rises," but not as an ally. Towards the film's climax, an unnamed uniform blows up a section of a bridge right out from under Blake, preventing the hero from getting children to safety. That cop is played by Desmond Harrington, who plays another cop on Showtime's "Dexter." There, he's Joey Quinn, the smart-mouthed detective with an on-again off-again relationship with Deb Morgan, Dexter's sister.

» Outside of the Gotham police force, one of the characters Blake interacts with most is Reilly, the head of the orphanage where the cop spent much of his childhood. He's played by actor Chris Ellis, who has appeared in all sorts of films and television series from "That Thing You Do" to "Justified" and beyond.

» "Rises" also features two veterans of "24" season four. William Devane has a brief appearance in the movie as the President of the United States, a role that's not far off from his character on "24," secretary of defense James Heller. (You ought to know Devane from a whole lot of other films and shows, too, but that's a feature for another day.) Also from the fourth season is Tomas Arana as Dave Conlon, a security operative who makes the mistake of getting in the way of Jack Bauer's investigation into nuke-seeking terrorist Habib Marwan. In "Rises," Arana plays a lawyer trying to sort out the Wayne estate at the end of the film. You might also recognize the actor for his role in "Gladiator." Arana starred in the Oscar-winning epic as Quintus, one of Maximus' old allies who sells him out to Commodus. He redeems himself in the end by allowing Maximus to end Commodus' life in the arena.

» If you're a "Lost" fan, it's hard to miss actor Brett Cullen, who stars in "Rises" as a congressman who falls under Selina Kyle's spell; he was one of the dreaded Others, Goodwin, on the ABC island drama. And if you're a fan of "Reno 911," it's positively impossible to ignore the super-random Thomas Lennon sighting in "Rises." The occasional Jim Dangle (who rocks short-shorts better than anybody who isn't named Tobias Funke) plays a doctor who gives Bruce Wayne a much-needed reality check on his current physical condition. Wayne, as he's wont to do, completely ignores Lennon's advice.

#187; And that's not even mentioning some of the other actors who pop up in "Rises," like "Atonement" actress Juno Temple as Selina Kyle's barely-seen sidekick, or "Ramona and Beezus" star Joey King as young Talia. Like I said, Nolan knows how to cast his movies. No use trying to catalogue all of those familiar faces; let's just be happy that Nolan knows them well enough to make our moviegoing experiences that much richer.

Who else did you recognize in the "Dark Knight" cast? Let us know in the comments below or hit me up on Twitter @roundhoward!

Batman massacre victim survived Canada food court shooting last month

Media_httpimgthesunco_fpepy

TV Sports reporter Jessica Ghawi was in Toronto’s Eaton Centre food court just moments before a gunman opened fire on June 2, killing one person and injuring seven.

She wrote of her terror following the incident and said she avoided being in the firing line after getting an “odd feeling” and wandering outside the mall.

Tragic Jessica - among 12 people killed early today when a masked maniac opened fire at a cinema screening of The Dark Knight Rises near Denver - wrote: “I found out after seeing a map of the scene, that minutes later a man was standing in the same spot I just ate at and opened fire in the food court full of people.

“Had I had sushi, I would’ve been in the same place where one of the victims was found. “My receipt shows my purchase was made at 6:20 pm. After that purchase I said I felt funny.

“It wasn’t the kind of funny you feel after spending money you know you shouldn’t have spent. It was almost a panicky feeling that left my chest feeling like something was missing.

Bite-sized, Spoiler-free Review of The Dark Knight Rises

Media_httpwwwliveforf_moupi

In the interests of time, a million other reviews out there and to avoid repetitiveness, musings shall remain short and sweet…

Chris Nolan’s third instalment of the successful and much loved Batman reboot is finally unveiled, with the pressure of living up to the billion dollar-earning, Oscar-winning sequel The Dark Knight, can The Dark Knight Rises live up to its ridiculously high expectations?

To begin with, it’s worth declaring that Rises is a breathtaking spectacle on a sublime scale; more so than Batman Begins and on par with The Dark Knight.

We’re thrust eight years into the future, and therefore takes a little time to re-establish itself, but does so satisfyingly within the opening thirty minutes. The script incorporates snippets of relevant exposition in order to burst into the film’s second and third acts with great momentum, allowing the events that take place thereafter to have the most impact possible due to the existing investment in the characters.

Christian Bale thrives just as he does in the previous entries, mixing billionaire recluse Bruce Wayne with the masked vigilante well. Michael Caine’s Alfred has meatier segments of dialogue early on, which certainly test Caine’s ability more than before. However, it’s Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Selina Kyle that really impresses, as she threatens to steal the film all by herself. Tom Hardy’s Bane is effective and as accomplished as his brutish character can be, but is unable to display the taut impact of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

Whilst the narrative and early structure isn’t as polished as The Dark Knight, the set pieces and action sequences are just as mind-blowing. What’s more, the screentime Batman and Bane share is just as riveting as the ones with Joker in the previous entry.

Various moments offer a poignancy that’s largely devoid in the other movies, and achieves the balance of emotion just right, especially where key characters are concerned. Things aren’t hampered by the tremendous score courtesy of Hans Zimmer, either, and adds to the grandiose magnitude of events.

The Dark Knight Rises is a truly epic conclusion to Nolan’s breath-taking trilogy. Apart from a slightly slow beginning, the majority is pacey, slick, thrilling and utterly spectacular. Anne Hathaway surprisingly stamps her authority, as Bale et al remain as watchable as ever.

If there’s one film to see this year, it’s this.

Shooting Wraps On The Dark Knight Rises

Filming on The Dark Knight Rises has come to an end, meaning that Christopher Nolan will now lock himself away in post-production to knock the final Batman film into shape.

Darkknightrisespostergig

In almost unpredicented ways, the last seven months has seen sneak photos from the sets, leaked footage of fights and flights, and almost daily updates from the streets of London, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and New York.

That, though, will now come to an end, as Nolan begins the task of editing the film, adding special effects and producing a fitting finale to his Batman trilogy.

The first full-length trailer is expected to be shown before screenings of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, elaborating on the teaser that was released earlier this summer.

The Dark Knight Rises is released on July 20, 2012.

Batman's 'butler' Michael Gough dies at 94

LONDON (AP) - Michael Gough, the British actor best known for playing Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred in a series of Batman movies, died Thursday at age 94, his ex-wife said.
Gough appeared in more than 150 movies and television shows, including British science-fiction show "Doctor Who," and recently voiced characters in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Corpse Bride." But he remains best remembered for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman franchise, opposite three different Batmans: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.
The veteran actor died at home in England, surrounded by family, his ex-wife Anneke Wills said through her agent.
Wills, who herself starred in the "Dr. Who," said in an obituary posted on its website: "As his body was deteriorating this week, he said that he wanted to hang on for St. Patrick's Day. And he did, just. In the end ... there is only love."
Gough starred in "Batman Returns," directed by Burton in 1992, and "Batman Forever" in 1995 and "Batman and Robin" in 1997, both by Joel Schumacher.

‘Star Trek’ writers: ‘We have broken the story’ for sequel

The 2009 reboot of “Star Trek” was a shining moment for fans of sci-fi and spectacle films and the sequel, due in 2012, may well follow the box-office trajectory of the Christopher Nolan Gotham City films — “Batman Begins” earned the credibility with fans old and new and then “The Dark Knight” delivered the billion-dollar payoff. “Star Trek” writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the tandem that also penned “Transformers” and next summer’s “Cowboys & Aliens” and also created the Fox sci-fi series “Fringe,” are back to script the sequel. I caught up with the screenwriters, who talked about the challenges ahead and also shared a playful aspiration — an on-screen showdown between Captain Kirk and Darth Vader.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in "Star Trek." (Paramount)
GB: It’s early days on the “Star Trek” sequel, but is there anything you can tell us about the story direction, tone or even the types of challenges you’re anticipating with this next-step project?
AK: Well, we have broken the story, which is very exciting. I think one of the weird challenges that we’re facing on this one is that in many ways, with the first movie, I don’t think people knew what to expect, so when we were in the writing process, Bob and I really spent our time going to things that we loved about “Trek” and it was a very unfiltered process. It felt intimate and small. There weren’t a lot of voices other than [producer] Damon [Lindelof], J.J. and [executive producer] Bryan Burke. Now, that first movie has come up and did well and everyone wants to know what happens next. We didn’t have that pressure, exactly, on the first one.  That said, part of what we have to do is listen to it all, ask a lot of questions about what people’s expectations are — and then let all of that go when we sit down to write. We need to find our way back to the same kind of vibe that we had when we wrote the first one: What do we want to see here? What moved us about “Trek”? Where can we go from where we left off?
RO: One of the big challenges is all of the characters are together now. A prequel is a pain in the butt, but one of the nice little advantages was that you get to meet the characters as you go through the story and they get to meet each other. That’s fun. We don’t that luxury of not having the entire family there together at the start of the story. So now you want the character stories to be good for everybody but also not just be there to be stories but also fit into the plot and be organic. We’re looking at a lot of the old episodes for inspiration, still. Whereas the last movie was all about breaking free from “Star Trek” and its canon, now that we can do whatever we want, we still want it to feel like good ol’ “Star Trek” even though it’s a new story.
GB: Well, if you guys need a horta, I’m available. I can send over a head shot …
AK: We already have your head shot on our wall.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. (NBC)
GB: Is your approach to this going to follow the lines of something like “The Empire Strikes Back,” where it’s essentially a second act and everything the heroes have built up in the first film is taken away from them and there’s doubt and despair before the resolution of the third film’s final-act story? Or, with that episodic heritage and optimistic spirit of that classic “Trek” archive, do you see these movies as more like self-contained adventures?
AK: It’s a great question.
RO: Yeah, that is an interesting question. I don’t know that we’ve ever thought of it in terms of a trilogy. We thought of the first one as, “How do we tell how this happened the first time and how do we free it so that it can go on forever without stepping on what came before.” So, if you were thinking of this movie as a second act, yeah, you would think of it as an “Empire Strikes Back” sort of story, but I’m not sure we’re thinking of it as a second act. I can’t speak for everybody on that, though.
AK: The movies you’re talking about are movies that we’re still talking about, what, 25 or 30 years later, because they have such emotional impact not just on us as viewers but because they put the characters through the mill in a way that was so primal and visceral. Good sequels do that; they find ways to challenge their characters in ways that they couldn’t have necessarily been challenged with in the first movie because, as Bob said, the first is always, ultimately, an origin story. So now [with the second] it becomes about this family that’s together, so now it becomes about the thing that shakes them up and challenges them.

Leonard Nimoy on "Star Trek," the original series (NBC)
GB: Your great advantage going in is the chemistry between this bright, young cast. It must be a treat to write for an ensemble that has already shown a lot of spark, humor and nuance.
AK: “Treat” is literally the perfect word. We spend a lot of time talking about how — now that everyone is together — they all need really clear, defined moments. Moments that are specific to their characters, specific to way they interact with each other and also build on the dynamic of those amazing, amazing actors. It’s going to be joy for us.
RO: What do you think, should Spock and Kirk play 3-D chess?
GB: Clearly. Absolutely. But it should be like “Harry Potter” chess where they’re in the game, like on the holodeck or something.
AK: Or Wookiee chess. Kirk and Chewbacca. Always let the Wookiee win.
RO: A third movie would be great [if it was] a crossover between “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.”
AK: I know I would buy a ticket for that.
– Geoff Boucher
For the record: An earlier version of this post identified J.J. Abrams as the “Star Trek” sequel’s director. No director has been named.
