Newscaster Blames 'Dark Knight Rises' Massacre on Autism

Joe ScarboroughWhen I first read that Joe Scarborough said he suspects alleged mass murderer James Holmes might be autistic, I was skeptical. Surely he'd been misquoted or his comments taken out of context. No one could be that ignorant or so egotistic to think that based on what we know, autism would have anything to do with it, right? Sadly, it's wrong.

Scarborough did just that, and I, along with plenty in the autism community, am aghast and appalled. The MSNBC host and former politician made the outrageous comments on air. While he prefaced them by saying, "You don't want to generalize," he then went on to do that and so much more. He said:

As soon as I heard about this shooting, I knew who it was. I knew it was a young, white male, probably from an affluent neighborhood, disconnected from society -- it happens time and time again. Most of it has to do with mental health; you have these people that are somewhere, I believe, on the autism scale. I don't know if that's the case here, but it happens more often than not. People that can walk around in society, they can function on college campuses -- they can even excel on college campuses -- but are socially disconnected.

Arrogant. Ignorant. Appalling. Those are just a few of the words that come to mind. Autism is already cloaked with so much misunderstanding and so many misconceptions that it's beyond irresponsible for Scarborough to make such an outrageous assertion. For the individuals with autism and their families, it's a huge slap in the face and such a blatant example of the prejudice and ignorance they face every day.

More from The Stir: Teen Risks Life to Save 6-Year-Old at 'Dark Knight' Shooting (VIDEO)

Even worse is the fact that Scarborough has a son with Asperger's and that he doesn't get why it's so hurtful to so many to immediately blame autism for this tragedy. He should know better. Instead he went on to pass more blame saying that while HIS son "is loved by everybody in his family and is wonderful," you have to worry about "those who may not have a loving family and a support group and may be a bit further along on the autism spectrum."

There's a petition at Change.org calling for him to retract his statements, and International Coalition for Autism and All Abilities (ICAA) has called for an apology from Scarborough, calling his comments "a sad yet strong illustration of the prevailing ignorance and bigotry in our culture regarding disabilities, specifically autism." I hope he issues one. The damage is already done, but he could at least do a little control by admitting that he was wrong ... oh so wrong in saying what he did. Here's the clip so you can hear for yourself.

Colorado victims' families face 'killer Joker' as he makes disturbing first appearance at court

Media_httpidailymailc_vjoum

The father of a 24-year-old man gunned down during a late-night screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado last week has described the moment he came face-to-face with his son's killer and how he said to himself: 'You're not such a tough guy now.'

Tom Teves, whose son Alex Teves died saving the life of his girlfriend after gunfire erupted in the cinema, sat in the front row in Arapahoe County Courthouse as suspected gunman James Holmes, 24, made a bleary-eyed court appearance and shocked the court with his dyed red hair.

Mr Teves was among scores of relatives and friends who descended on the courthouse to face the man suspected of murdering their loved ones, with some demanding Holmes should face the death penalty for his heinous crime.

Fighting back tears outside the court, Tom Teves said: 'I saw the coward in court today, and Alex could have floored him without breaking a sweat.'

He went on: 'Seeing him in court I said to myself: 'You're not such a tough guy now', or something to that effect'.

'I didn't say it to him, they wouldn't let me near him. I was here today for my son, I honoured my son, he would have done it for me.

'Somebody had to be in the courtroom to say: "You know what, you went in with ballistic protection and guns and shot, you shot a six-year-old!" I mean give me a break.

'And when the cops came he gave up? You've got the ballistic protection on, take on some people who know how to use guns. That didn't happen.'

Alex Teves was among the 12 victims shot dead in the Aurora cinema shortly after midnight on Friday morning.

Holmes, pictured in court and in his newly-released mugshot with bright orange hair after he claimed he dyed it to look like The Joker, is accused of buying a ticket to the movie before donning ballistic gear and firing indiscriminately at the crowd, also injuring 58 people.

On Friday, he made his first court appearance looking disheveled, wide-eyed and as if he could not concentrate.

Holmes, wearing a dark red prison issue top with ‘Arapahoe County Jail’ written on its back, was brought into the court by two security guards with six more standing in the room.
The suspect sat in a chair next at the front of the court and struggled to his feet when asked to stand as the judge entered as if he were exhausted.

He looked straight ahead as the judge advised him of the case. Judge William Sylvester told Holmes he is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and that he had denied bail. He added that the suspected gunman must not have any contact with any surviving victims or relatives of victims.

Holmes' lawyer Daniel King told the court that the defense was not yet ready for 'scientific tests', which suggests Holmes could be being lined up for a mental health test.
Throughout the advisement, Holmes sat next to Tamara Brady, his assigned public defender. While suspects often interact with their public defenders about the judge's address, Holmes sat silently.

He was watched by relatives and friends of the victims, some of whom called for the death penalty outside the court.

Prosecutors said they are seeking the death penalty for the suspected shooter, a former PhD student described as an outsider who is believed to have recently gone through a break up.
Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers said that her office will decide whether to pursue the penalty after consultation with victims' families.

Speaking after the court appearance, Chambers said the decision will need to be made within 60 days of Holmes's arraignment. She said the formal charges will be filed against him next Monday.

Chambers added that first-degree murder charges can be filed if a suspect is believed to have 'extreme indifference' to a crime or if it is carried out 'after deliberation'.

She said that just because police found evidence at Holmes's apartment and arrested him soon after the killings, the legal proceedings against him are 'not a slam dunk'.

'In a case like this, the investigation doesn’t stop. It will continue right up to the trial,' she said.

Speaking outside the court victims' relatives said they were horrified by his appearance and called for him to be executed.

David Sanchez , 53, whose son-in-law Caleb Medely, 23, was shot in the head, said: 'He doesn’t look right, there is something demonic about him. He has these crazy eyes.

'I want him to get the death penalty – justice will be served when he gets the death penalty. Seeing justice is so important for me and my family. This has been horrendous.'

Corbin Dates, who was sitting in the second row of the Century 16 cinema and survived the gun attack, said he was stunned to see the suspected killer without his mask.

'It's a shock,' he told CNN. 'I did not expect taht at all. The person who was covered in black - I thought it was someone who works out, who has a history of knowing weapons.

He continued: 'He has no right coming to court and looking like he has a sad face. That's not something that's goig to be believable. Who are you trying to fool with that face?'

Legal experts told the Denver Post that Holmes's attorneys are likely to pursue an insanity defense.

And looking at Holmes in court, it is clear the suspected murderer, who stared straight ahead and blinked slowly, did not look quite right.

CNN legal analyst Paul Callan said it was unlikely he would have been given drugs that would impair his understanding of the judge's comments.

'My bet is that he was not medicated,' Callan said. 'His appearance may relate to his treatment in jail - we do not know how long he was interrogated for.

'I think you're looking at a very tired individual combined with what his normal personality might be.'

Of his defense case, former Adams County District Attorney Bob Grant told the Post he saw little option but to plead insanity.

'You just have to imagine that there is something in his psychiatric makeup that will be exploited by his defense team,' he said. 'I don't know what the hell else they are going to say.'

Experts added Holmes is likely to undergo a competency test to see if he is psychologically fit to assist in his defense.
'If in fact he is sane, it's a hopeless case for the defense,' legal analyst, Scott Robinson, said. 'They caught him literally gunpowder-handed with his weapons, with his tactical gear.'

David Lane, a lawyer who has represented 25 people charged with death-penalty offenses, added: 'There are some crimes, the nature of which just scream out 'crazy.' This is one of those cases.'

He has been held at the Arapahoe Detention Center since his arrest in the cinema parking lot just moments after the shooting spree on Friday morning.

Jailors at the facility told the New York Daily News the suspect has not shown any remorse for the killings. He has been acting bizarrely ever since arriving and 'thinks he's acting in a movie', they said.

'He was spitting at the door and spitting at the guards,' a released inmate added outside the jail. 'He’s spitting at everything. Dude was acting crazy.'

It comes as new details shed light on a possible motive for the massacre. It is believed Holmes was due to be kicked out of his flat and may have recently broken up with a girlfriend, while one friend said his addiction to video games meant he had lost touch with reality.

But it could take months to figure out the cause behind the killings; as he waited for his first court appearance, authorities disclosed Holmes is refusing to cooperate.

Before being moved to the courtroom for the hearing, he was held in solitary confinement at an Arapahoe County detention facility.

He was assigned a public defender and Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said that the suspect has 'lawyered up' since his arrest in the early hours of Friday in the cinema parking lot.

'He's not talking to us,' Oates added.

In regards to a possible motice, Aurora police chief Daniel Oates had hinted that Holmes had recently gone through a break up and that authorities were investigating the claim.

'I’ve heard one morsel of information about a relationship that may or may not be true,' he told CBS' Face the Nation.

'That’s why we have all our investigators working on this. That’s why we brought in the FBI behavioral analysts. They’re going to figure all that stuff out.'

It is also believed that Holmes was due to be evicted from his flat. The 24-year-old, who is now in police custody, pulled out of the university weeks before the deadly attack.

Neighbours told TMZ anyone living in the block had to be enrolled at the university otherwise you had 30 days to evacuate.

It is not known exactly when Holmes stopped going to classes but it is thought he was nearing the end of the 30-day grace period.

A former classmate from the University of Colorado suggested another cause for the killings, saying Holmes had lost touch with reality after becoming 'obsessed' with video games.

The classmate told the Daily Mail: 'James was obsessed with computer games and was always playing role-playing games.

'I can’t remember which one but it was something like World of Warcraft, one of those where you compete against people on the internet.
'He did not have much of a life apart from that and doing his work. James seemed like he wanted to be in the game and be one of the characters.
'It seemed that being online was more important to him than real life. He must have lost his sense of reality, how else can you shoot dozens of people you don’t know?'

Other acquaintances, who had worked with Holmes at a children's summer camp in 2008, noted he was an outsider who was 'shy and reserved'.

'The entire staff was really close, considering we lived together - except for James,' the counselor told NBC News.

'He really kept to himself and hardly ever went on any trips with the rest of the staff. He was very shy and reserved. It is sickening knowing that he killed kids the same age that he once cared for.'

Holmes worked at the California camp during the summer of 2008, and supervised around 10 underprivileged children between the ages of seven and 14, a spokesperson said.

Amid the continuing investigation into Holmes and his character, memorial services were held in Aurora on Sunday, with the community holding a prayer vigil.

President Barack Obama also arrived to visit victims' families at the University of Colorado Hospital and said he told the families that 'all of America and much of the world is thinking about them'.

Several thousand gathered for healing at the vigil Sunday night, while well-wishers left notes, soft toys, pictures and flowers at crosses for each of the victims opposite the cinema in Aurora.
On Friday, the family of James Holmes also spoke out for the first time, through their lawyer Lisa Damiani in San Diego, California.

Damiani stressed that Holmes's mother, who had previously indicated her son was the man who had carried out the massacre, had been wrongly portrayed by the media. When she said, 'You have the right person', she meant herself, not her son, Damiani said.

The lawyer added: 'It is important that a case of this significance is tried in the courthouse, not in the media.'

US President Barack Obama has said he is "shocked and saddened" by the deadly mass shooting at a Colorado cinema screening of the The Dark Knight Rises.

Federal law enforcement officials confirmed the lone suspect being detained by police was 24-year-old James Holmes. Police have cordoned off his apartment - a three block area.

A California woman who identified herself as the mother of James Holmes, the 24-year-old man federal authorities said is the suspect in a mass shooting in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater, told ABC News her son was likely the culprit, saying, "You have the right person."

The woman, contacted at her home in San Diego, spoke briefly with ABC News and immediately expressed concern her son may be involved in the shooting.

"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."

President Obama urged the nation to "come together as one American family".

He described the shooting as "horrific and tragic" and said his administration will do everything it can to support the people of Aurora.

He was in Florida at the time of the murder spree. The White House said Mr Obama was informed of the shooting by his Homeland Security Adviser, John Brennan.

Police have revised the death toll down to 12. Earlier reports feared 14 people had been murdered.

t was the worst mass shooting in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, where two students opened fire and killed 12 classmates and a teacher.

Some movie-goers said they thought the attack was part of the show. Then they saw a silhouette of a person in the smoke at the front of the theatre, pointing a gun at the crowd.

"I told my friend, 'We've got to get out of here,' but then he shot people trying to go out the exits," Jennifer Seeger told NBC. She said the shooter made his way up the aisle, shooting as he went, saying nothing.

Some of the injured were children, with the youngest a three-month-old baby. Victims were being treated for chemical exposure apparently related to canisters thrown by the gunman.

Local reporter Justin Jones said the gunman was wearing body armour and a gas mask.

"The attacker shot a baby at point blank range," he said.

Another eyewitness, James Cameron, said the baby girl was shot in the back.

Aurora Police chief Dan Oates said one suspected gunman had been taken into custody - and police were not looking for a second suspect at this stage.

"One of our highest priorities will be dealing with the famlilies of the victims," he said.

"Ten people died in the theatre and two died in hosital as a result of their injuries."

Witness Hayden Miller told KUSA-TV that he was inside Theatre 16 in a suburb of Denver when he heard several shots.

"Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming," he told the station.

Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw "people hunched over leaving theatre".

Brenda Stuart, of 850 KOA Radio, said the victims were shot dead but there may have also been an explosion. It is reported that many of the victims are children.

She said police are looking for a second explosive device at the Centruy 16 movie theatre in Aurora Mall.

As many as 50 people are believed to have been injured in the attack.

Ms Stuart said: "The shooting started during the midnight showing at the theatre. Many people thought it was part of the movie before panic set in.

"Police are taking people to hospital in their own cars, not waiting for ambulances to arrive. There were chaotic scenes as people desperately tried to flee.""

Fox News had earlier reported that two people were involved in the attack .

The FBI are on the scene to co-ordinate the investigation but their efforts are being hampered by fears that a bomb may have been planted in the movie theatre parking lot.

The movie complex was sold out for the screening.

The preview trailers had just finished when a gas canister exploded, according to witnesses. It is believed the gunman opened fire as people began to flee the theatres..

WAS DEADLY SHOOTING INSPIRED BY BATMAN COMIC BOOK?

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

The Dark Knight cinema massacre may have been inspired by a Batman comic book strip, it emerged on Friday.

The bloodbath is a chilling copycat of a 25-year-old Batman comic strip which features a deranged gunman opening fire in a cinema.

In the second issue of The Dark Knight Returns, written by Frank Miller - the creative mind behind Sin City and 300 - gunman Arnold Crimp opens fire in a pornographic theatre, killing three people, after listening to Led Zepplin's classic track 'Stairway to Heaven.'

Text from the page reads: 'Arnold Crimp fingers the cold steel thing in his pocket and stares at the movie marquee and does not throw up.

'He thinks about Led Zeppelin and how they are trying to kill him.

'He had not known about Led Zeppelin until Father Don on TV had explained it last night.

'Father Don said that Led Zeppelin hid a prayer to Satan in their song Stairway to Heaven.

'They hid it very well. They recorded it backwards.

'Arnold Crimp took the album from the record store where he worked until they fired him this afternoon and transferred Stairway to Heaven to tape.

'Then he played the tape backwards. He played it forty-seven times until he was absolutely certain that Father Don was right.'

Crimp then walks into a cinema, which is screening a pornographic film called My Sweet Satan, and opens fire.

Holmes motives behind the massacre are unknown, but if he was a fan of the Batman comics, then he may well have read the issue featuring Crimp's killing-spree.

The comic itself is still in print, and on Friday it was available in several Waterstones' book shops, priced £12.99.

Police chief Dan Oates told reporters that an apartment block in the north of Aurora had been evacuated as a consequence of the man's claims his apartment had explosives.

Around 6.40 a.m. local time, there were a reports of an explosion at the apartment.

Police said they suspect that another handgun was found left in the cinema but there was no evidence of any other attackers. He added there was no immediate knowledge of the motive.

'Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,' Mr Oates said at a news conference.

The incident at the Century 16 cinema complex began at 00:30 local time - 30 minutes into the start of the screening.

The preview trailers had just finished when a gas canister was thrown across in front of the screen and exploded in the auditorium.

A witness told CNN: 'We heard anywhere from 10 to 20 shots and little explosions going on. Shortly after that we heard people screaming.

'Then they came on PA system and said everyone needed to get out. As soon as we got out, there were people running around and screaming.'

'He looked so calm when he did it,' another witness said. 'It was like scary. He waited for both the bombs to explode before he did anything.

'Then, after both of them exploded, he began to shoot. He had no specific target. He just started letting loose.'

Witnesses said that the shooting was so brutal that bullets went through the walls into the next door screen.

Police received the first emergency call at 00.39 a.m. local time.

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding in to authorities, officials said.

Cell phone video taken at the cinema by a witness showed crowds of people screaming and fleeing the building, with some with blood on their clothes.

‘Dark Knight’ Theater Shooting Suspect Is an Online Mystery

aurora

I’ve spent my morning scouring the Internet for clues to who James Holmes is and why he, according to police, shot and killed 12 theater goers (while wounding dozens of others) at a midnight showing of Batman Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colo. So far, I’ve come up empty.

Most of us share too much online, and history has shown that crazed lone gunmen often telegraph their intentions on the Internet long before they actually commit any acts of violence.

Not, apparently, James Holmes.

Police say he’s 24, with no previous criminal record. Another report said he hails from San Diego and that his mother is still there. We’ll know more details soon enough: Holmes is in custody, and there’s a 1 p.m. ET press conference.

Still, I cannot get over what an online ghost Holmes appears to be. Like many others, I have searched Facebook and found many James Holmeses. One, who is not the shooter, had to go on Facebook to defend himself. Other than that, Facebook has no apparent evidence of the suspect Holmes’s existence.

I scoured MySpace and Twitter and found people with the same or similar names, but nothing fit. I kept digging. (I lived in Colorado for a time; at one point, not very far from Aurora — we often drove there for pizza — and felt an odd and uncomfortable connection to the tragedy.)

In the absence of real information, tasteless fake posts have emerged. They anger me both because they make it harder to get at the truth and because they’re just plain heartless.

I moved my search to gun enthusiast and support sites based in Colorado. I didn’t look them up because people who like guns are violent people; they’re not. But someone who wants to use a gun for violence might gravitate to such a site or even boast on it about his plans.

These sites are easy enough to find. There’s COGunOwners.com, for one. The forum lacks a search engine, but I used Google search to dig in. Searches on “Aurora,” “theater” and “Batman” returned nothing related to the incident or any chatter by any random poster about a plan to shoot people in a movie theater.

I also stumbled on this site, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners: “Colorado’s only no-compromise gun rights organization.” But they weren’t talking about anything except gun rights and the second amendment.

Three hours in and I couldn’t unearth a single piece of useful online information.

As I scoured on Google, more and more of my results were filled with real-time reports of the incident, making it even harder to do research. Restricting my search by date helped somewhat, but even then, fresh reports on the shooting crept into the results.

I tapped Twitter’s advanced search, which let me search by keywords, phrases, area and sentiment, but not by date. There was little of use in there.

It’s inconceivable to me that Holmes has no online profile. The most obvious answer is that he has not been using his real name. What his handles could be on these various social networks, I have no idea.

But I am convinced: somewhere online there are facts about the gunman and why he did this. The Internet will eventually tell his tale.

Though I doubt his actions will ever make sense to any of us.

Death threat 'Batman' reviewer: Midnight screening massacre likely unrelated to passionate fans

Media_httpglobalfncst_imgei

A horrific shooting at a midnight screening of the new Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” in a suburb outside of Denver has left at least 12 people dead and 50 wounded.

The massacre comes after emotions had been running unusually high for a movie premiere.

Marshall Fine’s less-than-glowing review of “The Dark Knight Rises” earned the reviewer death threats, posted on the movie review web site, RottenTomatoes.com. The vitriol was so intense, the website discontinued any and all commenting on the movie.

“Someone said that they’d like to beat me into a coma with a hose, someone else wanted to set me on fire,” Marshall Fine tells FOXNews.com. “But I never took those comments as threatening, because there’s a big difference between someone sending you a letter or calling you on the telephone and posting something anonymously on an Internet thread.”

Fine says there's also a big difference between a random Internet threat and what happened in Colorado.

“We know nothing about [the shooter] and why he did what he did,” said Fine. “Maybe he was a crazed Superman fan who was upset that the Batman movie came out first – we don’t know. This is an act of violence and everybody knew that every theater in the country was showing this movie at midnight last night, so it was going to be packed with people. So, if you’re someone who’s decided that, ‘I’m going to make an impact by killing a bunch of people and becoming a celebrity,’ what better way to do it than to go to the place where you know the most people are going to be so that you can have the most victims."

Still, Fine says the Batman series seems to stir emotions in people unlike any other franchise.

“The people who were waiting for this movie are very passionate about what they like,” Fine explained. “Batman the character has been around for 70 years, and people have been waiting for this movie since 2008, when the last one came out.”

"Batman: Dark Night Rises" is the third movie in Christopher Nolan's trilogy about the superhero. The second installment was also overshadowed by tragedy when co-star Heath Ledger died of an overdose before the film's premiere.

Excitement Around Batman Premiere Turns to Horror as 12 Shot Dead at Colorado Theater - James Holmes

Media_httpwww2picture_kkkhc

The nation is in shock this morning following the brutal murder of at least 12 people at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado.

Authorities believe a 24-year-old man named James Holmes is responsible for the shootings, which injured at least 38 people, including a 3-month-old infant. Found in the theater parking lot with a shotgun, a hand gun, and an "A.K. type" rifle, according to a federal law enforcement official speaking with CNN, Holmes was arrested and taken into custody shortly after the shooting. His apartment complex was evacuated after he told police he had explosive material in his home. Police have since confirmed the apartment is booby-trapped with "pretty sophisticated" materials.

According to witnesses, the gunman entered the theater wearing all black, threw tear gas canisters into the audience and began firing. Confused theatergoers reportedly believed that it was a stunt related to the film until they realized that people were actually being injured. Amateur video footage of the aftermath shows people exiting the theater covered in blood.

Though there is little information available about Holmes or his potential motive, his mother seems unsurprised by his arrest. Contacted in San Diego by ABC News, she stated, "You have the right person. I need to call the police ... I need to fly out to Colorado."

In the wake of the shooting, Warner Bros. has canceled the film's Paris premiere, which was scheduled to take place Friday evening. A rep for the studio stated, "Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."

President Barack Obama offered his condolences early Friday morning, stating, "Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado."

Colorado Shooting Suspect James Holmes: New Details

The apartment complex is home exclusively to University of Colorado Medical Center students, patients, and staff members, residents tell ABC News.

Witnesses in the movie theater said Holmes saw smoke and heard gunshots that they thought were part of the movie until they saw Holmes standing in front of the screen, after entering from an emergency exit. Holmes methodically stalked the aisles of the theater, shooting people at random, as panicked movie-watchers in the packed auditorium tried to escape, witnesses said.

"You just smelled smoke and you just kept hearing it, you just heard bam bam bam, non-stop. The gunman never had to reload. Shots just kept going, kept going, kept going," one witness told ABC News.

"I'm with coworkers and we're on the floor praying to God we don't get shot, and the gunshots continue on and on, and when the sound finally stopped, we started to get up and people were just bleeding," another theatergoer said.

Police said 10 victims died inside the theater, while dozens of others were taken to local hospitals, including a child as young as 6 years old.

A San Diego woman identifying herself as James Holmes's mother spoke briefly with ABC News this morning.

She had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting and had not been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said.

"I need to call the police," she added. "I need to fly out to Colorado."

The woman and her husband later released a statement saying their "hearts go out to those who involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We are still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy."

Holmes was wearing a bullet-proof vest and riot helmet and carrying a gas mask, rifle, and handgun, when he was apprehended, according to police. Federal Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms sources told ABC News that agents will begin tracing an assault rifle, shotgun, and two handguns used in the attack.

As he was taken into custody, Holmes mentioned having "booby-trapped" his apartment with explosives stored, leading police to evacuate his entire North Aurora apartment complex and search the buildings early this morning.

The highly-anticipated third installment of the Batman trilogy opened to packed auditoriums around the country at midnight showings on Friday morning, and features a villain named Bane who wears a bulletproof vest and gas mask. Trailers for the movie show explosions at public events including a football game. Though many moviegoers dressed in costume to attend the opening night screening, police have made no statements about any connection between the gunman's motives and the movie.

Police in New York have intensified security around showings of the film throughout the five boroughs today, with Police Commissioner Ray Kelley saying that "as a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing."

The Paris premiere of the movie has been cancelled in the wake of the shootings. "Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time," the movie's producers said in a statement.

Witnesses watching movies in theaters next to the one where the shooting took place said bullets tore through the theater walls and they heard screaming.

"The suspect throws tear gas in the air, and as the tear gas appears he started shooting," said Lamar Lane, who was watching the midnight showing of the movie with his brother. "It was very hard to breathe. I told my brother to take cover. It took awhile. I started seeing flashes and screaming, I just saw blood and people yelling and a quick glimpse of the guy who had a gas mask on. I was pushed out. There was chaos, we started running."

One witness said she saw people dropping to the ground after the gunshots began.

"We were maybe 20 or 30 minutes into the movie and all you hear, first you smell smoke, everybody thought it was fireworks or something like that, and then you just see people dropping and the gunshots are constant," witness Christ Jones told ABC's Denver affiliate KMGH. "I heard at least 20 to 30 rounds within that minute or two."

A man who talked to a couple who was inside the theater told ABC News, "They got up and they started to run through the emergency exit, and that when she turned around, she said all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing at people, just picking random people," he said. "The gunshots continued to go on and on and then after we didn't hear anything...we finally got up and there was people bleeding, there was people obviously may have been actually dead or anything, and we just ran up out of there, there was chaos everywhere."

Witnesses and victims were taken to Gateway High School for questioning.

Hundreds of police and FBI agents are involved in the investigation. A senior official who is monitoring the situation in Washington said that early guidance based on the early snapshot of this man's background indicated that this act does not appear to be linked to radical terrorism or anything related to Islamic terrorism.

Dr. Comilla Sasson, at the University of Colorado Hospital where many of the victims were taken, said they are currently operating on nine critical patients and have treated 22 in all. She called the hospital "an absolutely terrifying scene all night."

"The good news is that the 3-month-old has actually been discharged home and is in the care of their parents

In a statement, President Obama said, "Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded."

Vi a otra gente herida. Era un caos total. La gente gritaba 'Mi amigo fue baleado' o 'Mi hermana fue baleada'", dijo Fernández hablando con los medios locales frente a la Escuela Gateway, en Aurora, donde la policía estadounidense está interrogando a los testigos.

"Vi a mucha gente cubierta de sangre. No supe cómo reaccionar", indicó Fernández.

"Me dio mucho miedo.
