If you thought Facebook's Slingshot app was the last time Mark Zuckerberg's company would try and copy the Snapchat
approach, think again. A small number of users running Facebook's
iPhone app have noticed a new expiration date option for their posts —
status updates, photos or any other type of content can be set to
automatically disappear after a set time (between one hour and seven
days).Facebook often runs small-scale experiments to see how a
feature plays out with users, and not all of them make it into the
social network proper. With that in mind, the disappearing posts idea
may itself disappear, but it's interesting to see the world's largest
social network looking to copy the key feature of one of its biggest
rivals.

The phenomenal growth of Snapchat (which Facebook offered
$3 billion for last year) has been in part due to the ephemerality and
impermanence of the images and videos posted there. Particularly among
younger users, the ability to post something that isn't going to stay on
the web forever has proven to be a big draw. Facebook has tried to copy
the functionality with its own Slingshot app, while the Facebook-owned
Instagram has a similar tool called Bolt (currently available in a few select markets outside the U.S.).

Even
with more than 1 billion users on its books, Facebook bosses know they
can't afford to be complacent — the smaller, more mobile-focused apps in
the marketplace have the potential to steal away chunks of Facebook's
core audience very quickly indeed.

The social network has confirmed to The Next Web
that it is running a "pilot" program with expiring posts, and there's a
brief Help page on the topic too. If the feature does become an
official one, you'll be able to post those late-night pictures from the
dancefloor safe in the knowledge that they'll be gone by the time you
wake up... unless someone has saved them in the meantime, of course.

4-Year-Old Kicked out of Preschool Over Mom's Facebook Post

A Christian preschool in Florida expelled a 4-year-old student
after his mom complained about school administration in a Facebook
post. Although her son had done nothing wrong, she apparently violated a
policy against "sowing discord."

In the fairly tame post, Ashley
Habat vented her frustrations with Callahan, Fla.'s Sonshine Christian
Academy because she felt they hadn't given her enough notice about
picture day.

"Why is it that every single day there is something
new I dislike about Will's School? Are my standards really too high or
are people working in the education field really just that ignorant?"
she wrote, tagging the school.

Although
Habat's son wasn't accused of any wrongdoing, she says Sonshine told
her it didn't want him anymore because his mom "wasn't the right fit"
with the school.

This is part of the letter she received from administration, WJXT Jacksonville reported:

"Your relationship with Sonshine did not get off to a very good start
the first day of school. … You utilized social media to call into
question not only the integrity but the intelligence of our staff. ...
These actions are also consistent with sowing discord, which is spoken
of in the handbook you signed."

Habat is shocked and
outraged, WKMG reported, that the school would take its issues with a
parent out on an innocent 4-year-old. She also says she didn't think the
school would be able to see the post—even though she tagged it—because
it was set to "friends only."

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s Christmas cash gift of almost P30 million to his fellow senators rubbed Filipino netizens the wrong way, with some critics describing it as “suspicious” and “unethical.” The report on Enrile’s cash gift, which the Philippine Daily Inquirer broke Wednesday, immediately made the rounds of social networking sites as flustered readers shared it on their Twitter and Facebook accounts. The story easily became the most read article on INQUIRER.net, the broadsheet’s official website, with hundreds of users swarming to the comments section. On Facebook, the article had been recommended by users over 6,000 times by Wednesday evening. “Enrile has no power whatsoever to disburse public money indiscriminately!!! Regardless of the type of funds these are allocated to, these still belong to the government of the Filipinos and therefore cannot be spent arbitrarily,” user Bansot commented on the Inquirer website. “While the rest of the Filipinos are working hard, these senators are living luxurious lives,” user Jeff Castillo commented on the story. “What a way to end his political career, being true to form as a self-serving and corrupt politician,” user kulittwit chimed in. The Inquirer reported that Enrile gave 18 senators P1.6 million each, while four senators got P250,000 each—Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Alan Peter and sister Pia Cayetano who were known to have differences with Enrile. The cash gift, billed as “additional MOOE” or maintenance and other operating expenses, allegedly came from the funds allotted for the Senate post vacated by President Aquino when he won the presidential election in 2010. A senator described the gift as “unconscionable and unconstitutional” and that it could be interpreted as a bribe to prevent his ouster as Senate President, an observation shared by many in cyberspace. In response to these allegations, Enrile took to his official Twitter account, @SPJPE, and tweeted, “Those Senators who think that I am bribing anyone with additional budgets in order to keep my post as Senate President must have a very low opinion about their own colleagues.” “I was elected as Senate President twice and I can look at anyone straight in the eye in saying that I did not buy this position. Not one single centavo of the people’s money was spent just to enable me to cling to this office,” he continued. He issued the same statement to Senate reporters. Still, not many were pleased with Enrile’s distribution of the Senate funds as Christmas gift to his colleagues. “I find Enrile’s generosity suspicious and unethical,” tweeted user @i Jakebustos. ‘The audacity’ “This is a matter that @noynoyaquino should really look into … it stinks of unethical practices using public funds,” said user @kazekhan. “The audacity! Intruders recently infiltrated the systems running the world's largest online social network but did not steal any sensitive information about Facebook's more than 1 billion users, according to a blog posting Friday by the company's security team.

The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.

The news didn't seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc. (FB)'s stock dipped 10 cents to $28.22 in Friday's extended trading.

The main building at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters lists its address as 1 Hacker Way. From there, Facebook serves as the gatekeeper for billions of potentially embarrassing photos and messages that get posted each month.

This time, at least, that material didn't get swept up in the digital break-in that Facebook said it discovered last month. The company didn't say why it waited until the afternoon before a holiday weekend to inform its users about the hack.

It was a sophisticated attack that also hit other companies, according to Facebook, which didn't identify the targets.

"As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future," Facebook wrote on the blog.

Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.

Late last month, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal - two of the three largest U.S. newspapers - said they were hit by China-based hackers believed to be interested in monitoring media coverage of topics that the Chinese government deemed important.

Facebook didn't identify a suspected origin of its hacking incident, but provided a few details about how it apparently happened.

The security lapse was traced to a handful of employees who visited a mobile software developer's website that had been compromised, which led to malware being installed on the workers' laptops. The PCs were infected even though they were supposed to be protected by the latest anti-virus software and were equipped with other up-to-date protection.

Facebook linked part of the problem to a security hole in the Java software that triggered a safety alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last month. The government agency advised computer users to disable Java on their machines because of a weakness that could be exploited by hackers.

Oracle Corp., the owner of Java, has since issued a security patch that it says has fixed the problem. In its post, Facebook said it received the Java fix two weeks ago.

Facebook never mentioned the word "hack" in describing the breach. That, no doubt, was by design because hacking is a good thing in Zuckerberg's vernacular.

To most people, hacking conjures images of malevolent behavior by intruders listening to private voicemails and villains crippling websites or breaking into email accounts.

Zuckerberg provided his interpretation of the word in a manifesto titled "The Hacker Way" that he included in the documents that the company filed for its initial public offering of stock last year.

"The word 'hacker' has an unfairly negative connotation from being portrayed in the media as people who break into computers," Zuckerberg wrote. "In reality, hacking just means building something quickly or testing the boundaries of what can be done."

Facebook makes quality control changes to Open Graph

Facebook has made some changes that may help its users’ news feeds get a little cleaner and more relevant.

On Thursday, the company told developers via a blog post that it was limiting the ways that so-called Open Graph applications — apps that integrate with the real-time feed that appears on the right side of Facebook users’ main pages — can automatically publish posts to users’ profiles.
For example, the company said that apps should no longer be able to publish updates to users’ news feeds as soon as they view an app’s content. Instead, the app developers will have to comply with certain standards for publishing an update automatically. In the case of reading an article, for example, developers could program the app so that it doesn’t send an automatic update unless someone has been on an article’s page for at least 10 seconds.

Responding to user feedback, Facebook also said it would disable a feature that let apps publish stories to friends’ walls. The feature had “high levels of negative user feedback,” the company said, with users hiding the updates or marking them as spam.

Facebook is also encouraging developers to experiment with maps and images in Open Graph apps, saying that users get more information out of these kinds of posts and are more likely to click on an update with an image or map.

All the moves are aimed at helping Facebook improve the overall quality of apps on its network, and may indicate that the company will be giving more careful review to newly submitted applications in the future.

“We’re excited by the increased quality of apps we are seeing and look forward to helping you grow,” wrote Facebook product engineer Henry Zhang.

Facebook Is Telling Evvvvveryone All the Embarrassing Shit You "Like"

Quick! Take a look at your Facebook profile. What do you "like"? Do you really like these things? Are you willing to PUT YOUR REPUTATION ON THE LINE just so you can affirm your affection for the NRA?

These aren't questions we should have to ask ourselves. Can't we support our favorite political party in peace? Can't we like things without LIKING THEM IN YOUR FACE?

Nope. Not on Facebook, we can't.

Over at ZDNet, Ed Bott reports that he's seen in his feed more than a few political pages posted via page of a friend who "likes" said campaign. These aren't sponsored posts, which would say so. These are posts put out by Facebook, a spokesperson for the company told Bott.

"To help people find new Pages, events, and other interesting information, people may now see posts from a Page a friend likes. These posts will include the social context from your friends who like the Page and will respect all existing settings."

Annoying! What's worse: there's basically nothing to be done about this. Writes Bott:

You can hide individual stories as they appear, but you can't block the page from posting again, and again, and again. And even if you remove the friend completely from your news feed, the forcibly shared posts appear. The only way to stop it is to unfriend the person whose Facebook identity is being misused.

Bott notes that this is an especially troublesome trick during an election season, when—while perhaps it's fine that your actual friends are reminded of your staunch conservative political stance—you might not want this info to be shared with your boss, great aunt, intern, or that guy who you just started dating. And, at this point, it's not surprising that these people are all already your friends on Facebook.

Facebook Wants to Keep You Virus-Free

Facebook may be a little lax when it comes to privacy, but it seems to be doubling down on security. The site is now directing users who think their computer might be infected with malware to sites where they can get free antivirus software.

The new Malware Checkpoint will send PC-users to sign up for either Microsoft Security Essentials or McAfee Scan and Repair, while those using macs will be sent to the Apple Security Updates site. It's actually the natural extension of an existing scheme, in which Facebook notifies users when the site detects a possible malware infection, then provides the user with free antivirus software to clean up the problem. A post on Facebook explains how the system works:

If you are concerned that your device may have been infected by malware, you can visit http://on.fb.me/infectedMSE or http://on.fb.me/infectedMcA to be self-enrolled in either our Microsoft Security Essentials or McAfee Scan and Repair malware checkpoints...

1. The McAfee option will download a small program onto your Windows computer to perform a one-time scan of your system for malware. It will not interfere with your existing anti-virus or other security products. After it scans your system, it will give you the option to automatically or manually remove the files it flags as malicious.

2. The Microsoft Security Essentials option is a full anti-virus product. Upon download and install, it will add anti-virus software to your computer that will continue to protect your system with the latest anti-virus signatures from Microsoft.

All in, it's actually a pretty smart idea: any attempt to educate less security-savvy users in how to keep themselves protected online has to be something worth supporting.

Facebook Just Stole an Apple Design Guru

One of Apple's top interface talents, frogdesign veteran and UI Design Manager Chris Weeldreyer, just jumped ship. And he's paddling straight for the muscular, Poseidon-like arms of Mark Zuckerberg. Is Facebook about to become beautiful?

9to5Mac points out Weeldreyer has some serious design clout under his well-designed belt (we're assuming it's well-designed):

He is listed as an inventor on several Apple Inc filed patents including iWeb for iPad, multi-touch and gesture related inventions, as well as a number of security related patents. His LinkedIn lists his specialties as: Industrial Design, Interaction Design, User Interface Design.

He'll now be a Product Manager at Facebook, which could mean any number of things. The meaty question is whether he'll turn his laser beam eyes toward Facebook.com, which in the Timeline era is in pretty great shape, or the oft-confused mobile apps. The mobile apps have become easier on the eyes, but rarely easier to use, and could certainly use an ass-whipping from someone with Weeldreyer's bona fides. [9to5Mac]

How to Time Your Facebook Posts to Reach the Most Fans

Jeff Widman co-founded PageLever to provide better Facebook analytics for marketers. PageLever measures more than 650 million Facebook fans across customers like YouTube and MTV. Jeff has been cited as an expert in Facebook analytics by Mashable, AdAge, the Wall Street Journal, Wired, InsideFacebook, AllFacebook, etc.

I get asked all the time, “How frequently should I post on my Facebook page? When is the best time to post?”

Answer: Post whenever the most recent status update for your page stops showing up in your fans’ News Feeds.

If you post often, you will see an immediate spike in News Feed impressions, but it’s generally not worth the cost in lost fans. When your fans see two status updates from you in their News Feeds, they’ll likely get annoyed, and will consequently unsubscribe or un-fan. There are few exceptions to this rule.

If you post too infrequently, you’re missing out on opportunities to reach your fans. Over the course of a year, a page with 10,000 fans that posts only half as often as they could misses more than 1 million chances to get their content in front of a hyper-targeted Facebook audience. The larger your fan page, the more often you should be posting — without annoying your fans.

The kicker: Each post performs differently. Some posts last ten hours, and some posts last thirty hours.

Calculate the average post lifetime by using the method below, but remember it’s just that — an average. To get really in-depth, figure the average post lifetime for photos vs. articles, or the average lifetime when you post Thursdays at 3 p.m. vs. Saturdays at 10 a.m. However, it’s still just an average; each post is unique, so you can never exactly predict how it will perform.

How do you know when a post stops appearing in your fans’ News Feeds?

The good news is that when you track your posts’ performance, you’ll be able to see, in real-time, when that post drops out of the News Feed. If it flops five hours sooner than you expected, then immediately stick up a new post.

Each status update drops out of different fans’ News Feeds at different times, depending on how long Facebook’s algorithm EdgeRank calculates that particular fan will be interested in that particular status update. Then, the best we can do is look at how each status update performs across all your fans’ News Feeds.

You’ll actually see a slowdown in new impressions, clicks, likes and comments as a post starts dropping out of News Feeds. The following graphs show cumulative numbers, so when the graph flattens, the post has dropped out of News Feeds.

Each of these metrics has pros and cons.

1. Impressions per-post: Impressions per-post is a single aggregate count of how many times a particular status update has been viewed. Facebook updates this number as more and more people view the post; however, it often won’t update for several hours at a time when Facebook’s computers are calculating for millions of posts across millions of fan pages. On the bright side, when it works, it’s great — you can literally watch as your post gets viewed by fans.

2. Comments per-post: All the comments on any status update are time-stamped, so you can measure on a minute-by-minute basis exactly when a fan saw the status update. Unfortunately, most status updates receive so few comments that there aren’t enough data points to determine whether your fans are choosing not to comment or simply aren’t seeing the post in their News Feeds.

3. Likes per-post: In general, this is the most accurate way to see when your status update starts dropping out of News Feeds. Facebook updates the post’s like count in near real time, so it’s more reliable than the post impression count. And because posts tend to get more likes than comments, the data presents an accurate picture of how long a post stayed in News Feeds. On the other hand, likes aren’t time-stamped, so you have to check the like count regularly to see when new likes are added.

So how do I actually measure?

Post a status update. Every hour, record the number of impressions, likes and comments. Figure out when the rate of new impressions or likes slows down.

Try recording all the raw data in Excel, then graph the data just like you see above. Visually estimate the post lifetime based on when the graph flattens out.

After you calculate the post lifetime for 10-20 posts, you’ll start to generate an average post lifetime unique to your fan page.

What’s the average post lifetime?

I don’t know.

However, I surveyed 20 posts across five fan pages that had 2 million+ fans, and calculated an average post lifetime of 22 hours, 51 minutes. Theoretically, this implies most fan pages shouldn’t post more than once a day.

I strongly recommend keeping track of your posts in real-time because post lifetimes vary widely, even across the same fan page. In my sample of twenty posts, the shortest post lasted only 10 hours, while the longest post lasted a full 50 hours!

If you weren’t tracking those posts, you would have been invisible in the News Feed for 13 hours when the post flopped at the 10-hour mark. Similarly, you could have delayed your next post when the high-performing post showed no sign of slowing down.

Lastly, feel free to experiment and break the rules.

You won’t know if your fans respond better to a different posting strategy until you try it. Use these analytics to augment your intelligence, not replace it.

Facebook Apologizes For Censoring Gay Kiss Photo

Two men kissing: too risque for Facebook?
The social network recently removed a picture of a gay kiss for allegedly violating its terms of use, which state, "You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."
The photo in question (see it here) accompanied a Facebook page calling for a "kiss-in" protest for an incident at a pub, where a gay couple was ousted for kissing (the landlady deemed the act "obscene").
Facebook has since re-instated the page, and apologized for the error in a statement.
"The photo in question does not violate our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and was removed in error," the statement read.
The removed picture, a promo pic from the soap opera Eastenders, contained no nudity or graphic sexuality, but the event has sparked outrage from users wondering why a photo of two fully clothed men engaging in a kiss would be flagged. Already, Facebook pages have been set up where users have flooded the feed with more pictures of same-sex kisses. A gay kiss-in to protest the act has also been organized.
Especially curious is the fact that Facebook does not remove every picture flagged as inappropriate. According to them, a "Facebook administrator looks into each report thoroughly in order to decide the appropriate course of action. If no violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities has occurred, then no action will be taken," suggesting that a person, not a program, may have removed the picture.

Five young men who allegedly beat up the owner of a Northwest Side pizza parlor early Sunday morning were arrested after the victim recognized one of the suspects as his son’s hockey teammate and used his Facebook page to identify the other culprits, authorities said.

The 49-year-old owner of Baci Pizzeria was beaten after he confronted Aaron Diaz and Carlo Suarez for harassing one of the other employees of the restaurant, 3235 N. Harlem, Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin said.

All five men, including Diaz, 20, and Suarez, 17, hit the owner in the face with their fists before running off, Conklin said.

The owner called police and chased the group until he caught up to them a few blocks later near a white van, Conklin said.

Some of the men came out the van and allegedly began punching and kicking the victim as he fell to the ground.

The restaurant owner then felt one of his attackers reach into his pocket and steal his cell phone and wallet, Conklin said.

“This is what you get for messing with the wolf gang,” one of the men told their prey, Conklin said.

Diaz and Suarez, both of Elmwood Park, were arrested on the scene.

The victim recognized Sua­rez as one of the men who played hockey with his son. When he went home, his daughter and his son looked at Suarez’s Facebook friends and were able to identify the other three men involved.

Diaz; Suarez; Arlind Nikolla, 21; Mateusz Lusz­czek, 20, and Joseph Wolf, 19, all of Elmwood Park, were all ordered held in lieu of $40,000 bail for aggravated battery and armed robbery charges Monday.

The "Lou Sarah" Facebook account has been deleted — coincidentally, around the same time that Palin assured her followers that she has but one "authentic Facebook account."
