Big Wins For 'Transparent' Make It Clear: TV's Undergoing A Revolution

Surrounded by his cast mates and the show's executive producer, Transparent
star Jeffrey Tambor faced a crowd of journalists backstage at the
Golden Globe awards Sunday, and made the case for why his win as best
actor in a comedy meant more than a typical Hollywood honor.

"This
is about changing people's lives," said Tambor, who won his award
playing a 70-year-old coming out as transgender. Earlier, while
accepting his award on national TV, he dedicated his award and
performance to the transgender community.

But, revolutionary as it was to see a TV series about a transgender woman win two Golden Globes, Transparent also made history of a different sort on Sunday.

It
was the first wins for original programming by Amazon; a company better
known for selling books than making TV shows just a few years ago.

In
the quality original TV game, Amazon has often seemed a step behind
rival Netflix – unfocused and less sure of its brand. But the wins – Transparent was also named best comedy or musical series, beating HBO's Girls and Netflix's Orange is the New Black – served notice that Amazon is a player, too.

Seen
as an important award in the film world, the Globes also made some
strong statements about TV. There were no honors for the Big Four
broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. Instead, Netflix saw House of Cards leading man Kevin Spacey finally take home a trophy as best actor in a drama, snapping a seven-time losing streak.

"I'm
very glad I'm not the Susan Lucci of the Golden Globes," Spacey said
backstage, minutes after telling a nationwide TV audience: "I cannot
(expletive) believe I've won."

The broadcaster who won biggest was the fifth network, The CW, which saw Jane the Virgin
star Gina Rodriguez named best actress in a comedy. It's been a great
few weeks for Rodriguez and the show; she recently won a People's Choice
Award and the network announced Sunday it was picking up Jane the Virgin for a second season.

But Rodriguez, who told me in July that she passed up a possible role on the Lifetime show Devious Maids
to wait for a part that would be less stereotypical, blossomed as a TV
star Sunday – answering questions backstage from the press in English
and Spanish, while stressing how her role has inspired other Latinas.

"There's
no better way to tell others they can win too, but by letting them live
in your dreams," she said. "When you ... follow your dreams, you give
other the allowance to do it themselves."

The Globes TV awards also seemed to reward what was new. Showtime's The Affair, which debuted in October, scored wins as best TV drama and best dramatic actress for star Ruth Wilson. FX's Fargo, which debuted in the spring of 2014, won as best miniseries and best actor in a miniseries for Billy Bob Thornton.

Best
of all, the Globes unfolded as a pretty good TV show itself; thanks
mostly to the ace hosting work of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They had an
inspired cameo from Margaret Cho, playing a North Korean general/film
critic in a callback to her work playing Kim Jong-il on Fey's series 30 Rock. And they even managed a Bill Cosby joke which was both bold and hysterical, turning on both women's awful impressions of him.

Even
George Clooney, who was the butt of jokes from Fey and Poehler at this
year and last year's Globes, said the two should host the show again –
though they have vowed not to do it again.

Much as some like to
hate on the Globes and group which chooses them, the Hollywood Foreign
Press Association, this time, they seemed to have gotten the TV end of
things very right.

In the process, they revealed just how
quickly the quality TV game has changed for some of the most powerful
players in the industry.

Golden globes 2013 Who Won and Best Moments

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards show was everything we hoped it would be – entertaining, funny, shocking and punctual! The show ran smoothly with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were golden as co-hosts. You just know they will be co-hosting again next year.

Some of their best lines:

“It’s the only night when the beautiful people of film rub shoulders with the rat-faced people of television.”

“I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”

“You know what Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son.”

“That was Hilary Clinton’s husband.” – after Bill Clinton’s appearance.

“Please welcome middle-aged George Clooney.”

“Anne Hathaway, you gave a stunning performance in Les Mis.I have not seen someone so alone and abandoned like that. Since you were on stage with James Franco at the Oscars.”
Here is a video of their opening monologue (or dialogue in this case):

Fellow Saturday Night Live alumni Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell also presented — together as well and they too were brilliantly funny.

Last night saw the Golden Globe Awards take place and I am so glad Ben Affleck won Best Director (Drama) for Argo.  Well deserved and makes up a little for him not being nominated for an Oscar. Argo also won Best Picture (Drama). Les Misérables won the most awards, but Django Unchained had a couple.

The event seemed to go very well with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler doing an excellent and very funny job hosting the ceremony. Who else wants to see Dog President? You can see their opening speech below.

Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig also made the nominations for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy most amusing although Tommy Lee Jones was not amused.

Then, of course, there was Jodie Foster’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. She is 50 and has been in the film business for 47 years! She talked about her life, her sexuality and lots more. Tina and Amy also referenced this in their closing line of the event.

All in all an excellent evening. Below are the full list of winners including some of the acceptance speeches.

Adele wins ‘Best Song’ & Taylor Swift made an ungracious loser-face: LOL?

Media_httpwwwcelebitc_vchkh

I know I’m a bitch for doing this, but here goes – a post devoted to the two big contenders for Best Song, Taylor Swift and Adele. I’ll admit that I laughed with pleasure when Adele won for “Skyfall” (because that’s a beautiful song and it’s going to win her an Oscar too), and then I laughed with schadenfreude when the cameras cut to Taylor Swift’s ungracious loser-face. Swifty was actually kind of pissed off that she didn’t win!! Hahaha. Instead, we were gifted with Adele’s magnificence and hilarity – she thought she might win, but she didn’t take the whole ordeal so seriously, you know? She got a high-five from Daniel Craig (and she gave him a shout-out during her speech!) and she just sounded like she was having a great time.
As for Swifty, the night got even worse when after she LOST (and she NEVER loses!!!), Amy and Tina made a joke at her expense. They told her not to go for Michael J. Fox’s son Sam (Sam was Mr. Golden Globe), and Tina was like “No, she needs some Me Time to learn about herself.” As for why they didn’t cut to Swifty at that exact moment – Swifty said it herself in an interview months ago – “They don’t cut to you if you aren’t laughing.” HA.

As for the fashion – Adele wore the same kind of dress she always wears, a black dress with sleeves by Burberry. Her hair looked great, fabulous makeup and everything. She just seemed to be having an excellent night, and even though the look was simple, she shined.

Swifty wore this eggplant Donna Karan Atelier dress… and it was one of my favorite looks of the night, actually. It was a beautiful color on her, and she styled it beautifully. I LOVED her earrings and her hair. My one quibble: I think the fit was slightly off on the bust. It wasn’t as bad as Jessica Chastain or anything, but there seemed to be something “off” around the sides.

Golden Globes 2013 Prediction: Best Actress

We're a little more than 24 hours from the first major awards show of the season: the Golden Globes! As we pass the time until funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler take the stage to host the annual ceremony, we're offering up our predictions for the show's bold-faced categories.

Without further ado, here's our take on Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical:

Jessica Chastain Reports On The Dangerous Set Of 'Zero Dark Thirty'

Best Actress - Drama
Despite a pair of Oscar nominations to her name, this year marks Naomi Watt's first Golden Globe nod — the only actress in the field to have not been previously nominated. Will the first time be a charm?

Who Will Win: It's been a busy two years for Jessica Chastain, who's earned back-to-back Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her roles in "The Help" and "Zero Dark Thirty." This will no doubt be the year the 35-year-old's hard work is rewarded. (She's already off to a good start having nabbed a Critics' Choice Award.)

Who Should Win: Who should win is less of an open-and-shut case than who will win — Chastain's not the only actress to have charmed critics this year. Marion Cotillard, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz have earned plenty of accolades along the way too. Yet, we'll give the slight advantage to the "Zero Dark Thirty" star. It's her time.

Best Actress - Comedy or Musical
Despite a field brimming with Hollywood veterans like Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Meryl Streep, it seems the only one anyone can talk about is relative newcomer Jennifer Lawrence. (Probably for good reason, considering she's the only actress in this category to also be nominated for an Oscar.)

Who Will Win: Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook." The buzz surrounding the David O. Russell adaptation, and the 22-year-old's performance in particular, has been near deafening. It'd no doubt be an upset if Lawrence didn't leave the ceremony with a gleaming orb tucked under her arm.

Who Should Win: This really is Lawrence's award to lose. A playful performance like hers as Bradley Cooper's widowed love interest (and dance enthusiast) Tiffany is the kind of stuff the Hollywood Foreign Press Association goes gaga over.

Can "Zero Dark Thirty" track down victory? Will "Les Miserables" hear the voters sing? Check in with MTV News on Sunday night for the 2013 Golden Globes winners, and don't miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet!

Golden Globe Nominations 2013: Snubs and Surprises!

Media_httpwwweonlinec_hbaxp

Uh-oh, is Les Misérables in trouble?

Some takes on the surprising nods—and exclusions—from Thursday's nominations for the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards:

Lincoln in the lead at the Globe noms

1. Les Mis?! Yes, it got nominated for Best Comedy/Musical. And, yes, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway got their expected acting nods, too. But the presumed favorite didn't rate any extra love for long shots like Russell Crowe, and, most alarming, was cut off at the knees in the directing category, where Tom Hooper failed to make a showing. Is the Hooper snub a bad Oscar omen? Or just a sign that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association really, really, really loves Quentin Tarantino, who was nominated for Django Unchained?

2. The Les Mis-Taylor Swift Sing-Off! The good news is there's a showdown coming between the all-new Les Mis number "Suddenly" (sung in the movie by Jackman) and Swift's Hunger Games contribution, "Safe & Sound." (Jon Bon Jovi, Keith Urban and Adele also have tunes in the running.) Unfortunately, we don't recall Original Songs being performed at the Globes ceremony.

3. The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Skyfall and Every Other Acclaimed Action Movie Ever Made?! You were expecting the HFPA to invite Bane and the gang to its party? Probably not. But snubs are snubs. And while Skyfall's (lone) nod for Adele is nice (and warranted), it doesn't change the maddening fact that the action genre just isn't considered award worthy.

4. Ted and This Is 40?! Stop looking through the list. You won't find either of these comedies nominated anywhere for anything—'cause, you know, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, up for three big awards, is way funnier.

5. Cloud Atlas! Had you forgotten about this ambitious box-office bust? The HFPA didn't, giving it some love for the score.

6. Nicole Kidman! If it was just the Globes, you'd think the HFPA was just being the HFPA, and getting all starry-eyed over the international star, who got headlines but not much more from the barely seen The Paperboy (worldwide gross: $693,286, per BoxOfficeMojo.com) But it's not just the Globes, of course. Kidman picked up a nod Tuesday from the Screen Actors Guild. She is now officially a real deal in Oscar's Supporting Actress race.

7. Richard Gere In, Anthony Hopkins Out?! With Jackman being nominated on the Comedy/Musical side, there was an opening in the Drama Actor category, an opening you might've guessed would go to Hitchcock favorite Hopkins. But it didn't. Gere, who got good buzz for the indie Arbitrage and who's been the beneficiary of a diligent awards-season campaign, took the slot instead.

8. Matthew McConaughey?! Jack Black, not McConaughey, got the Bernie love; Magic Mike got zip. File this one under "Wait 'til next year."

9. Maggie Smith?! Nomination for Downton Abbey? Check. Nomination for the Globes bait that is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? Nope. Instead, Smith earned her film acting nod (in the Comedy/Musical Actress category) for the off-the-radar ('til now) Quartet, which marks the directing debut of Dustin Hoffman.

10. Anna Karenina Dies—Again! If this once-promising contender couldn't win over Globe voters, and it didn't, aside from a single nod for its score, then it's not going to win over anybody.

11. Beasts of the Southern Wild?! You know how some movies are just not Oscar movies? (We mean besides action movies…) This movie would be an example of the kind of film that's just not a Golden Globes movie. The no-budget wonder, which should still figure into the Academy Awards, got nothing from the HFPA.

12. Tommy Lee Jones: Yes, he got nominated for Lincoln, but he was also very good in Hope Springs, which the Globes saw fit to honor with a Comedy/Musical Actress nod for Meryl Streep. Like Ted and This Is 40, Jones got taken out in the Comedy/Musical Acting category by Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (in the form of Ewan McGregor).

Golden Globes 2013 nominations full list, surprises and snubs

One look at today's nominations for the 2013 Golden Globes tells you one thing: it's been a great year for cinema. Admittedly, the Best Picture list is somewhat predictable: Ben Affleck's Argo, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Ang Lee's Life Of Pi and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty - but unlike most years, there's no one clear favourite. There's not even two; it's that close.

In other categories, there's a much deserved Best Comedy/Musical shortlist for Moonrise Kingdom, although personally we'd be amazed is Tom Hooper's Les Misérables doesn't take it. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen's multiple nominations came as a surprise but it's good to see Joaquin Phoenix recognised for The Master, GQ cover star Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty and Jennifer Lawrence for The Silver Linings Playbook. Perhaps the closest category is for supporting actor, with the likes of Leo DiCaprio, Tommy Lee Jones and Philip Seymour Hoffman fighting it out.

But the biggest shocks came in the TV categories: nothing for Mad Men's superb fifth season, nor a single appearance for Game Of Thrones, but Jeff Daniels is shortlisted for The Newsroom. Expect Best Actor to again be a play off between Homeland's Damian Lewis and Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad. Personally, we're just hoping Ben Affleck's excellent Argo isn't orgotten in the inevitable post-Christmas Lincoln/Zero Dark Thirty face-off.

Translation: Bitch Is Scared Of Madge's Soul-Eating Powers

Elton John's husband David Furnish went on a bitter old queen rant the night Madge won the Golden Globe for Best Song over the song from his movie Gnomeo & Juliet. Shots were fired and Madge made a mental note to claim the soul of David's first born Zachary by revenge fucking him in 18 years. We should all assume that Madge also threatened to strangle David with her velocicrotch in his sleep, because he's put down his weapon, slid it over to her side and is now saying on Facebook (via UsWeekly) that his words were blown out of proportion.

"Wow! What a tempest in a teapot. My comments regarding The Golden Globes have been blown way out of proportion. My passion for our film Gnomeo & Juliet and belief in Elton's song really got my emotional juices going. But I must say for the record that I do believe Madonna is a great artist, and that Elton and I wish her all the best for next week's premiere of the film W.E."

Hmmm. I wonder which part was blown out of proportion? The part where he wrote "Madonna for Best Song? Fuck off!" or the part where he wrote that her "acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism." Or maybe the part where he used her old CD booklets to line the inside of Elton's Depends? I hate it when this shit happens. David let his bitter bitch flag fly brightly and now he's backpedaling up Madge's ass, because he's afraid she's going to make his hairline jump back a few inches when she puts him in a neck-hold with her engorged peen arms. David is an embarrassment in his wussyissism (and I'm an embarrassment for using the word wussyissism).

And when you write the line "my passion for our film Gnomeo & Juliet," everything you write afterward should be struck from the record, because it's obvious you're okay with not making sense and it's not right for you to drag us down too.

Speaking of W.E., here's a piece of The Daily Telegraph's smile-inducing, heartwarming and day-making review:

Madonna’s skill with the camera seems to extend to her being able to turn it on, but not a great deal further: to liven up an argument between Wallis and Edward, she has her romantic leads inexplicably run around a tree trunk. Later, we see Wallis dancing the Charleston with an African tribeswoman to the strains of 'Pretty Vacant’ by The Sex Pistols in front of a Charlie Chaplin film, which must be a strong contender for the most garbled, half-baked image in cinema history.

W.E. is — still — a stultifyingly vapid film, festooned with moments of pure aesthetic idiocy. With characteristic humbleness, Madonna performs a song called 'Masterpiece’ over the end credits, although one can’t help but feel that her 2003 number one single 'Sorry’ might have been more appropriate.

Now that's how it's done, David! W.E.'s chances at getting nominated for an Oscar are as bleak as my asshole getting nominated for an Oscar, but the academy should still flash this review when they acknowledge Madge's movie career in the In Memoriam segment.

(Thanks Gillian)

Narcissistic Old Queen vs. Narcissistic Old Queen

Media_httpdlistedcomf_upegg

This is what old British cunt queen Elton John said on the GGs red carpet last night about going up against his arch rival Madge in the Best Song category: "Madonna hasn't got a fucking chance."

This is what happened a couple of hours later when the winner of Best Song was announced.

The OTHER old British cunt queen won and the look on Elton John's face was a thing of bitter beauty. It's like Elton inhaled the British queef (yes, she queefs with a British accent) Madge let out to make room for her bloated ego as she went on stage to gloat about beating him. Madge dropped a vagina fart on Elton's words and forced him to eat it. Elton wanted to strangle the smug fake Britishness out of Madge's tongue the same way her dress was strangling her chichis.

And Elton's mad face slowly got even more mad as Madge beat the Guinness World Record for saying the word ME approximately 45 million times in the span of 45 seconds. It was the highlight of the night for me, because I love it when old cunts fight. But it didn't stop there. Later last night, as Elton rage ate through a turkey drumstick that his chef sculpted to look like Madge (completed with charred turkey gristle arms), his husband David Furnish spewed more bitter bitchiness on Facebook:

"Madonna. Best song???? Fuck off!!! Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in it's narcissism. And her critisism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is."

This feud is almost better than watching your abuelita on your mother's side and your grandma on your father's side fight over the last piece of cake in a cup at your birthday party. You know, as much as I'd love to watch Madge and Elton slap each other in the face with pristine white gloves, I'm going to need Queen Elizabeth to hit both of them with her pocketbook to show these not knowing hos who the real QUEEN is. If Queen Elizabeth isn't available, then Quween on the Scene can step in for her.

Can Madonna snag Oscar after Golden Globe shocker?

UPDATE: The rules for Best Song at the Oscars say that only the first music cue played over the end credits is eligible for consideration. As director, Madonna goofed when she didn't start her tune until 90 seconds into the end credits.

After claiming victory at the Golden Globes, the Material Girl would have been a serious contender at the Academy Awards for the song "Masterpiece" from the movie she directed "W.E." She penned the tune with Julie Frost and Jim Harry. While the film was a critical bomb, the Hollywood Foreign Press has been such a supporter of Madonna over the years that it was no surprise when her name was called.

With seven career Globe nominations under her belt and now two wins -- her first was for Best Comedy/Musical Actress for "Evita" (1996) -- the controversial singer/actress almost moved one step closer to receiving that elusive Oscar. Hey, if Eminem ("8 Mile," 2002) and Three 6 Mafia ("Hustle & Flow," 2005) can be called Academy Award winners, why not Madge?

The seven-time Grammy winner would have faced formidable competition in the race for Best Original Song, including Elton John and Lady Gaga ("Gnomeo and Juliet"), Chris Cornell ("Machine Gun Preacher"), Sinéad O'Connor ("Albert Nobbs") and Mary J. Blige ("The Help"). But even if she were eligible, a Golden Globe win doesn't always translate into an Oscar. Just last year Diane Warren won for a track from "Burlesque" but was snubbed at the Academy Awards.

Madonna is the talk of the town today thanks to her banter with disappointing Globes host Ricky Gervais. When the emcee introduced her by mocking her "like a virgin" status, Madonna retorted, "If I'm still just like a virgin Ricky, then why don't you come over here and do something about it? I haven't kissed a girl in a few years. On TV." Gervais then darted across the stage behind her, making for one of the Globes' most memorable moments.

Below, Madonna takes the stage to accept her Golden Globe.

Madonna’s Golden Globe miffs Elton John

There was plenty of drama at the post-awards parties for the Golden Globes. While Madonna publicly laughed it off, it’s clear Elton John and his spouse David Furnish were furious about the Material Mom beating out Sir Elton for best film song on Sunday.

Furnish posted an angry note on Facebook (“Madonna. Best Song? F--- off!”) and the two men continued to harp at post-Globes parties about both the award and Madonna’s acceptance speech, which they called self-indulgent.

John was especially angry Madonna admitted that the song was very much an afterthought, added only after the movie was basically finished.

The two superstars have long had a testy relationship. The feud started years ago, when John snipped about Madonna being merely a “lip-syncher.”

Backstage Sunday, Madonna told the press she hopes John “speaks to me for the next couple of years. He’s been known to get mad at me, so I don’t know. He’s brilliant, and I adore him, so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad.”

However, I’m hearing her private comments — after she read Furnish’s remarks on Facebook — were far less gracious.

In addition, she is irked by John and Furnish constantly dissing her “fake British accent” and also is unhappy about their unflattering digs at her “W.E.” film about the Wallis Simpson-Edward VIII romance.

One has to remember John and Furnish are very close to the British royal family, who, of course, long have been traumatized by the big abdication crisis in 1936 that threatened the future of the monarchy.

Tina Fey Strikes Again

Media_httpi602photobu_adilc

Somebody had to give the videobomb of the night and even though I was secretly hoping it would be an actual lit bomb behind Madge as she licked her own ego during her ten-year-long acceptance speech, it was Tina Fey! While who ever was on stage was throwing out the names of the nominees for Best Actress in a TV Comedy, Amy Poehler thought the camera lens and her were having a special intimate moment together, but then Tina snuck in like a chrishansenhaveaseat.gif. Tina is seriously becoming a seasoned bomber, because this is her second time stealing a ho's shine at an awards show.

So if your ass is ever sitting in a $30,000 borrowed gown at an awards show and you hear the sounds of the Jaws theme behind you, it's Tina Fey stealing your shot! Or it's Phoebe Price since the secret ingredient in her chicken cutlets are magnets that drag her toward the camera. Wait. Are we sure this isn't actually Chicken Cutlets in a Tina Fey mask?

“The Artist,” a silent film that pays homage to that era of Hollywood history, leads the Golden Globes with six nominations including best comedy or musical.

LOS ANGELES — GOLDEN GLOBE voters did little to clear up a blurry awards picture in Hollywood on Thursday, giving films like “The Artist,” “The Help” and“ The Descendants” roughly the same number of nominations and snubbing some perceived Oscar front-runners.

Golden Globes
Golden Globes

News, features and multimedia from the movies award season.

The movie industry’s self-congratulatory season is typically well defined by now, with favorites firmly established and potential dark horses looming. But consensus has yet to form fully around any film this year, perhaps because an unusual number of top contenders are arriving late.

Leading the Globes nominations with six was “The Artist,” a black-and-white silent film from the French director Michel Hazanavicius. That film, backed by the awards maven Harvey Weinstein, got most of its nods in major categories, including best comedy. “This movie is a love letter to Hollywood, and it’s an indescribable joy to receive this news,” Mr. Hazanavicius said in an e-mail.

Two films were a whisker behind with five nominations each: “The Descendants,”Alexander Payne’s drama about a Hawaiian land baron and his splintered family, and “The Help,” about black maids in the 1960s and the white families they serve. Both were nominated for best drama, a category that also included “Moneyball,” “War Horse,” “The Ides of March” and “Hugo.” Hollywood, of course, paid just as much attention (or more) to the snubs.

Perhaps most notable was the complete shutout of an expected Oscar darling, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” a post-Sept. 11 drama from the director Stephen Daldry and the producer Scott Rudin. This film, with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock among its stars, may have suffered from its direct look at the emotional impact of the terror attacks.

“Those who love it love it passionately, and those who resist it find it too tough as an emotional experience,” Mr. Rudin said in an e-mail on Thursday.

Steven Spielberg also got slapped, with his “War Horse,” a look at World War I through equine eyes, picking up only a pair of nominations — the same number of nominations that voters gave Madonna’s critically drubbed “W.E.”

Focus Features failed to get any nominations for“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,”while Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” got only a lone acknowledgment, for Leonardo DiCaprio as best actor.

On a happier side of the scale voters gave a somewhat puzzling boost to “The Ides of March,”George Clooney’s political drama; it had meager ticket sales and has so far been of minor note on the awards trail, but it walked away with four Globe nominations. The support of“Ides of March”by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 90-member group that gives out the Globes, presents an unusual twist: a group of foreign journalists buying into a picture about American politics that hasn’t fared so well with the home crowd.

Awards strategists noted that both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were invited back. Mr. Pitt was singled out as a best actor nominee for his baseball executive in “Moneyball,” which received four nods total. Not to leave him without a date at the ceremony, the organization nominated “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” which marks Ms. Jolie’s debut as a director, for best foreign film. The Globes are not taken seriously as artistic milestones and have a history of voting idiosyncrasies;“True Grit”got no Globe nominations last year, for instance, but went on to receive 10 nominations at the Academy Awards. The organization is still mocked for naming Pia Zadora new star of the year in 1981.

Studios also complain that the group tends to nominate based on star wattage instead of performance in an attempt to orchestrate a red-carpet spectacle. Madonna was the best example of that this year. Awards strategists also pointed to nominations for Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet as best actress for“Carnage.”Still, Hollywood picks over the Globes for clues about the Oscar race. The best picture Oscar has mirrored the Golden Globes’ choice for best drama or best comedy-musical about two-thirds of the time over the last two decades. The Globes as Oscar forecaster did not work last year, with “The Social Network” beating out “The King’s Speech,” which won the Academy Award for best picture.

Studios also rely on Globe nominations to fuel ticket sales and lift movies out of the year-end multiplex pile-up; this year pictures like “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” which received two nominations, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” “War Horse” and “The Iron Lady” (starring Meryl Streep, who landed her 25th Globe nomination for the part) are among the films arriving around Christmas.

The nominations were announced shortly after 5 a.m. Pacific Time. A full list of nominees can be found here.

Regardless of the quirky nature of the Globes, nominees reacted with practiced graciousness.Glenn Close, nominated for best actress in a drama for her gender-bending role in “Albert Nobbs,” called the attention an “extraordinary honor”; that film also received nominations for best supporting actress (Janet McTeer) and original song (Ms. Close and Brian Byrne). “The whole ‘Albert Nobbs’ team is walking on air,” Ms. Close said.

Viggo Mortensen, nominated for best supporting actor for playing Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s “Dangerous Method,” said it was “a pleasant surprise,” but lamented that Mr. Cronenberg was overlooked in the directing category. In the comedy-musical category Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” was the standout nominee with four, including best director and best comedy. The other nominees for best comedy-musical were “50/50,” the true story of a man dealing with cancer; “Bridesmaids”and“My Week With Marilyn.”

Golden Globes
Television Awards

Here is the list of the Golden Globe nominees for television.

While the movie awards receive most of the attention because of their proximity to the Oscar race, the Globes ceremony relies on television categories for much of its star power. Marquee names nominated for TV work this year include Jessica Lange (“American Horror Story”),Matt LeBlanc (“Episodes”) and, as usual,Tina Fey(“30 Rock”).

“Glee” fell off the nominations map — that Fox series got five nods last year and only one on Thursday — as HBO, always an outsize presence at the Globes, increased its stranglehold. That premium cable network received 18 nominations, the most of any TV company; Showtime was a distant second with eight.

About 17 million people watched the live Globes telecast last year, on par with the year before. By comparison, about 38 million people watched last year’s Oscar telecast.

The British comedian Ricky Gervais will return for the third year as host of the show, scheduled for Jan. 15 on NBC. Last year Mr. Gervais overshadowed the ceremony with a series of barbed remarks about celebrities in attendance, as well as the association itself. (On Thursday Aida Takla-O’Reilly, president of the association, referred to Mr. Gervais as “a naughty, naughty schoolboy.”)

But the real drama with the Globes continues to happen behind the scenes. Two lawsuits filed shortly before last January’s show have since blossomed into furious legal battles.

One case centers on what the foreign press association said was an attempt by Dick Clark Productions and its owner to hijack the ceremony by unilaterally negotiating a new agreement with NBC. Dick Clark Productions is once again staging the show, but its lawyers are prepping for a shootout with the association over the NBC contract at a trial that is set to begin on Jan. 24 in United States District Court in Los Angeles.

Juicier are a cluster of three suits in which Michael Russell, a former Globes publicist, and others claim that the press association is corrupt, pointing to the acceptance by some members of what the suit called “payola” from studios lobbying on behalf of certain actors and films.

The organization shot back with a suit charging Mr. Russell and associates with commandeering its charitable activities for their own benefit. Its latest amended complaint, filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court in late October, stretched to 591 pages, including exhibits.

This post has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: December 15, 2011

An earlier version of this post erroneously included a reference to "The King's Speech." It was not a big winner at the Golden Globes. And an earlier version of this post misattributed a distinction to "W.E." It is not the first film directed by Madonna.

Much maligned hosting Gig lands Ricky Gervais an Emmy Nod

ricky-gervais-shirtless-for-observer-magazine.jpg

When awards shows get nominated for awards, it's a little like a dog sniffing its own butt.

And sure enough, the Emmys have nominated the Tonys, the Oscars, and the Golden Globes, all of which will probably end up competing for a Pulitzer!

It's all so creepily incestual it's like a cult in the Bahamas.

But not everyone expected Ricky Gervais to get nominated for an Emmy for his pseudo-controversial Globes hosting job, including Gervais himself.

You'll recall how, in the non-story of the year, people acted upset by Ricky's bitchy performance, in which he made fun of such oft-mocked targets as Scientology and Charlie Sheen.

The Globes people acted irked, too, as if they had no idea what he was going to be reading off the prompter.

Well, clearly more people liked it than didn't -- Ricky was nominated.

When the Globes got an Emmy nod the other day, it turned out to mean he was up for a trophy, too!

"Hilarious," was his initial response.

He tells goldderby.com that he used Globe tactics to get the nomination, taking each Emmy voter to see Cher in concert.

Ricky also claims he wants the non-nominated Mr. Sheen to accept for him because they're both tortured souls.

Now that's controversial.

Ricky Gervais Is Definitely Not Sorry for His Golden Globes Jokes

Check out this website I found at gawker.com

Even though he was somewhat coy during his interview with David Letterman on Tuesday, Ricky Gervais came out swinging on tonight's Daily Show when Jon Stewart brought up the comedian's controversial performance at the Golden Globes. Said Gervais, "This is what I think I should apologize for about the Golden Globes: fuck all!"
