First 'Captain America: Civil War' Plot Details Revealed In Official Synopsis

Captain America: Civil War begins shooting in just two weeks, as the scheduled start date is April 1, exactly one month from the theatrical release of Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is significant since the events of that blockbuster will have a major bearing on the plot of Captain America: Civil War, which will deal with the fallout of the climactic battle in Age of Ultron.

 Along with the casting notice (which puts out a call for actors of
“many ethnicities” in the Atlanta area to serve as extras), the official
synopsis is revealing the first major plot details about the film, due
to hit theaters May 6, 2016. As expected, the film will be based on Mark
Millar’s Superhero Registration Act story arc from the comic books:

“Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective
governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman
activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two
factions to side with Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic
battle between former allies.”

So it’s going to be Captain America vs. Iron Man, just like it is in
the comic books. I guess it makes sense since Marvel just recently answered the question of who the real boss of the Avengers is, albeit in sarcastic fashion. Even though Captain America: Civil War
is ostensibly a Captain America movie, it might as well be an Avengers
sequel, considering how many Marvel heroes are expected to appear. You
have Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America along with Robert
Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but we’re also getting Scarlett
Johansson as Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Chadwick Boseman as
Black Panther, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, and
Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. Daniel Bruhl will play the villain,
and while his character hasn’t been confirmed just yet, it’s assumed
he’ll play Baron Zemo. So yeah, it’s a pretty stacked cast overall.
Hell, even Spider-Man is expected to appear in this, which makes for a
nice little bit of reciprocal casting since Iron Man is expected to appear in Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot.
Basically, Marvel is looking to retain its crown as the most
comprehensive cinematic universe on film today. Or, at the very least,
the most awesome.

Captain America 3 Will Change the Marvel Cinematic Universe Again

Captain America: The Winter Soldier changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe by essentially destroying S.H.I.E.L.D. According to co-directors Anthony Russo Joe Russo, the third film in the series will alter the landscape yet again.

The topic of Captain America 3 came up during the Russos' interview with Crave Online,
during which the brothers revealed a major announcement would arrive
soon. They also said the subtitle of the film has been in place at
Marvel Studios for years.


"If you've been talking to Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios]
the title has been in place probably for ten years in his brain," Joe
said. "It's all part of the road map that he's laid out, and it's all
part of the bigger plan."


The site then asked if The Winter Soldier built to Cap 3.
"Yeah, I think the way Kevin does it is there are big pieces that he
knows he wants to build towards, but the way that you get there is open
to interpretation and improv a little bit," joe said. "That's defined by
who gets involved with the project, the writers and directors involved
in the project. The big thing we knew we had to deal with in Captain America 2 was the fall of Hydra. Similarly there is a very, very big idea at the center of Captain America 3.
But how we get there is all up to us. And I think why Marvel has been
so successful is because it's been such a clear plan, that everything is
interconnected and they're building emotional capital with each movie
that you can then trade off of in the next film."


Finally, Crave asked if the villain, supporting characters or
character arc for Captain America in the third movie have also been in
place for years. "No, all that stuff is open for interpretation," Joe
said. "Usually it's just one big idea that alters the universe as a
whole in some way, that has interconnectedness that he's grabbed on to.
That's the case with Cap 3, but as far as villain and story arc and tone, all that stuff is left up to us."

Rumored Shortlist For ‘Captain America 2′ Female Lead

With Guardians of the Galaxy on the verge of getting a director, Iron Man 3 in production and The Avengers 2 confirming its director and release date, the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger has taken somewhat of a (relative) backseat in the media since having its official title revealed at Comic-Con.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier may begin production by the end of the year with brothers Anthony and Joe Russo directing a cast that will see Anthony Mackie joining the franchise as another Marvel hero, along with a new female lead.

The New York Post has the scoop which lists Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones and Imogen Poots as the current top three contenders for the role of the female lead and potential love interest of Steve Rogers in his first solo film based in modern times. British actress Hayley Atwell held that honor the first time around. The report potentially disproves rumors and theories that Atwell could return to play another member of her family 70 years later in the series timeline.

Knowing that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is serving partly as a S.H.I.E.L.D. film due to Steve Rogers’ role in the organization after awakening in the modern era and post-Avengers, it’s a safe bet that the role the brothers Russo are casting for is that of Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13). Carter is not only a member of Nick Fury’s agency, but she’s the niece of Peggy Carter (Atwell), the love interest of Cap in the first film.

The following synopsis was released by Marvel Studios in April along with the official Captain America 2 release date:

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger on April 4, 2014. The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

Anthony and Joe Russo strongly hinted that the Captain America sequel would include flashback sequences, most of which will undoubtedly be used to service the story of the The Winter Soldier, but it’s possible they could be used for another appearance of Atwell in the role of WWII-era Carter.

As for modern day Carter, of the three reported contenders for the role, Kendrick has a similar facial appearance (and the most notable resume of work), but Jones (the oldest of the three at 28) has the British heritage and look of Sharon Carter from the comics with the right hair color. My money is on her. Who would you pick?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan and potentially several familiar faces from the past. It will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

Summer 2011 Movies: The Best, The Worst, & Some Surprises | Screen Rant

 

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

 

Quibbles about whether Fast Five or Thor truly marked the start of Summer 2011 aside, the season started off with a bang at the box office – and eventually fizzled out in the end. So, here are the big questions: What were the standouts of the summer? And what movies left us unimpressed (to put it mildly)?

Bear in mind: the following is strictly OPINION and based on the collective views of us here at Screen Rant. Which is why, for example, Rise of the Planet of the Apes isn’t our choice for Best Surprise Summer Hit – while a lot of people were skeptical about how that franchise reboot would turn out, we were behind that flick long before it was released. So, the final product being as good as it was came as less a surprise to us.

Best Comic Book Movie – Captain America: The First Avenger

This summer, it turned out the best superhero comic book movie was being saved for last.

Thor and X-Men: First Class were both solid, but it was the second Marvel in-house production, Captain America: The First Avenger, that was arguably the overall best pure superhero movie of the season. It was appropriately old-fashioned in design, didn’t have to devote too much effort to setting up The Avengers – heck, it even came up with a clever explanation for why its main character runs around with a bullseye on his shield!

Captain America didn’t boast the enthralling action set pieces that some of its comic book movie peers have offered, but it was a fun blockbuster that featured some great characters, pleased comic book enthusiasts with its similarities to the source material – and, most importantly, made people all the more excited to see Steve Rogers return in both The Avengers and future Captain America solo ventures.

Most Disappointing Comic Book Movie - Green Lantern

Some two and a half months have passed since this superhero title hit theaters, and fans are still a bit tetchy, to say the least. While the majority of professional critics agree the movie was a mediocre attempt to realize the Green Lantern universe in live-action form, there remains a vocal minority of the fan community who feel that director Martin Campbell’s comic book flick is undeserving of all the flak it’s had to endure.

One thing we can (hopefully) all agree on is that Green Lantern certainly could’ve been better. Case in point: how many people who had never read a Lantern comic book prior to seeing the film honestly walked away afterwards with a solid understanding of how the Green Lantern Corps works? Or didn’t think there were there, at times, some gaping holes in the plot? Or didn’t feel that Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan kind of came off as DC’s answer to Marvel’s Iron Man - but not in a good way?

Perhaps this  “I’m a Marvel… and I’m a DC” skit put it best: We all love the Hal Jordan character – now we just want to see him appear in a good movie.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" delivers despite problems

Captain America may be the first Avenger, but he's also the penultimate test of a cinematic experiment that culminates in next year's superhero ensemble film, "The Avengers." Thus far, Marvel Studios' plan has been a success, with Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor all managing to establish themselves with mainstream audiences individually, then transforming that success into anticipation for their return in "Avengers."

However, after watching "Captain America: The First Avenger," it makes sense that the studio would position star-spangled superhero Steve Rogers as the last character to make his solo debut before the big "Avengers" reunion. In many ways, the film feels more like a preamble to something bigger than a self-contained story - but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

At a time when every film is envisioned as one chapter of a 12-part franchise, it's not always a deal-breaker to lean on what's come before and what the audience knows will follow. The recently concluded "Harry Potter" franchise was proof of that, and "Captain America" taps into a similar self-awareness of its role in a larger story arc that will be appreciated by comic book fans without alienating mainstream audiences.

Still, that's not to say that "Captain America" is devoid of problems. Despite some ambitious use of effects, the scrawny, pre-superhero Steve Rogers created by digitally grafting star Chris Evans' head onto another actor's body never seems quite human, and the addition of Evans' voice to the final product makes the entire character seem like an overdubbed mess. This is especially unfortunate, because it's clear the screenwriters did a good job of showing you why he was a hero long before he gained all of that extra muscle. Sadly, the weird, mismatched visual distracts from their work and makes it difficult to connect with the character.

On the flip side, "Captain America" overcomes the obstacle everyone saw in its path: finding a way to realistically portray a muscle-bound supersoldier in bright red, white, and blue spandex hurling his color-coordinated shield at a crimson, skull-faced villain. To its credit, the film explains why its soldier-turned-superhero's uniform makes perfect sense in the context of his adventures, and the Red Skull - while a bit more cartoonish than necessary - manages to seem right at home in the tale's WWII setting.

What also came as a surprise in "The First Avenger" was how similar the film felt to director Joe Johnston's first comic book movie, 1991's "The Rocketeer." The two comics-influenced period pieces share a similar tone, presenting their characters' adventures through a more innocent, Disney-fied version of reality and tapping into the nostalgic fun of comics' Silver Age heroes.

But even though the Walt Disney Company now owns Marvel, it's worth noting that "Captain America" definitely isn't just another "Rocketeer." This Marvel film is a darker, more violent adventure than Johnston's first foray into the comic book world (there's one scene in particular that echoes Indiana Jones' messy tarmac brawl in "Raiders of the Lost Ark"), and it harkens back to the character's original, gun-toting adventures that often left more than a few enemy soldiers dead in his wake.

Viewed as the explosion-a-minute, simple action film that it's intended to be, "Captain America" delivers on what it needs to do: introduce the character to mainstream audiences while not offending longtime fans, and prime the public for "The Avengers." Unlike prior Marvel movies, however, the film falls short in its effort to develop a character you'll gladly see more of without his superhero teammates.

Fortunately for Steve Rogers, that won't be an issue, as he'll get another chance to win audiences over next year when "Avengers" finally bows on the big screen. When that time comes around, though, he'll have to wrest the spotlight away from Iron Man, Thor, and the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Captain America - Rotten Tomatoes Score May Be Misleading

As Captain America prepares the jump to theaters the reviews are starting to roll in, but is Rotten Tomatoes deliberately manipulating the score for the First Avenger? That being said Rotten Tomatoes is indeed owned by Warner Brothers, the company behind the recently released Harry Potter movie. As the reviews roll in it would seem that the RT score is being manipulated to be presented as low score and in fact rotten. As I write this the score stands at 58% with a 7/10 rating, 14 positive reviews and 10 negative. Wow? 7/10 still, and it sits at a 58% rating? A little odd I might say. I've been scanning the web all day and I know for a fact there are way more than 14 positive reviews from major critics out there, and maybe there are more than 10 negative reviews from major critics but I don't see them. In fact every negative review that I see on the web is updated on RT, but there are still tons of positive reviews yet to be released. I also find it odd that of those 10 negative reviews 3 of them don't actually seem negative and they all have a score over 60%, is RT actually reading these things?
I don't think it's a stretch to think that RT is sitting on a ton of great reviews until the very last minute, or at least as long as they can. It's almost like they're deliberately waiting for a negative review to come in until they put up another positive one, perhaps to keep that score down as long as possible? I don't think it's a coincidence that of the first 8 reviews posted 6 of them were negative. Where have we gone since then? Positive has gone up by 12 and negative only by 4. Huh? maybe I'm just a conspiracy theorist but that does seem a little odd. And to further add to the coincidence those first negative reviews allowed RT to Tweet that Captain America: The First Avenger is Rotten! In fact they tweeted it a bunch of times. Why would they tweet that, after only 8 reviews? Seriously, I can almost say for a fact that wouldn't have happened to a Warner Brothers movie, and for good reason, 8 reviews is hardly a accurate representation of a movies critical reception.

To be honest if this is indeed what RT is attempting to do it's actually pretty smart albeit a little unethical. It's technically not illegal, they own the site and eventually all the reviews will be on there, but who's to say they're not doing their upmost to keep the positive buzz down. if you're like me when I woke up this morning I immediately went to RT out of curiosity, and it was at 38%, it really killed my buzz. Some of you may think that I'm foolish to care or lame to check RT that quickly but I enjoy movies and I want every movie to get a fair shake. Some people may not care how much money a movie makes, but I do, because money = sequels and I obviously want sequels to movies I love. If Captain America ends up with a poor rotten score then so be it. Not the end of the world, it is only a movie for that matter. Of course my insides would be crushed a little, kinda like how I felt for Green Lantern, mostly because I knew it wasn't going to make good money, and I really wanted a sequel so they could get another shot to convince general audiences that Green Lantern is an awesome character. I do think it's interesting how Green Lantern stayed as high as it could on RT until there were just no positive reviews left to keep it afloat, where as Captain America seems like the opposite, like RT is trying to keep it down.

Anyway, this is just a rant I felt like I wanted to talk about. In the end I'll form my own opinion of a movie, I just don't want early negative buzz to reflect into other people's opinions of a film they haven't seen yet, or worse convince a critic the movie is rotten when they otherwise would have loved it. Gotta love peer pressure. Sorry if I sound like a hypocrite, not trying to be. And I don't think this just is about Captain America, I feel like this could happen to a lot of movies. By the way all the Twitter buzz from people who have actually seen it is appears incredibly good.
