Ledisi's Message After Grammys Controversy: 'R&B Still Lives'

Ledisi

Ledisi

The singer is on the road for her 23-date Intimate Truth tour with Raheem DeVaughn & Leela James.

Ledisi has definitely moved past the Grammy Awards telecast controversy of Beyoncé performing "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" -- the Mahalia Jackson classic that Ledisi sang in Selma."Of
course, every artist wants to be on the Grammy stage, especially after
being nominated," she says. "However, it wasn't my time."

But on the eve of kicking off her latest tour, the Intimate Truth, at
Los Angeles' Club Nokia on Friday night (Feb. 27), the nine-time Grammy
nominee chatted with Billboard about a few more important truths.

Grammys 2015: Ledisi Responds to Beyonce Performing Her 'Selma' Track

Ledisi hopes the Grammy brouhaha will encourage longtime and new fans
to stand solidly behind R&B. "People need to full-on support
R&B artists so that more of us can be on TV and be booked for
concerts," declares the Verve singer/songwriter. "That requires not just
liking us on Facebook or Instagram, but buying our music and coming to
our shows. R&B still lives."

Aiding her on the mission during the Intimate Truth tour -- on which
seven of the dates have already sold out -- are special guests and
fellow R&B soldiers Raheem DeVaughn (whose new 368 Music Group/eOne Music album Love, Sex and Passion debuts at No. 1 on the R&B chart) and Leela James. Adds Ledisi, "This tour is a win for all of us."

The 23-date tour is named after Ledisi's latest release, a seven-song
EP featuring acoustic performances from her 2014 full-length The Truth. Among the stripped-down tracks featured on the EP is "Like This," the second single from The Truth.
The song also earned the singer her most recent Grammy nomination for
best R&B performance. Rounding out the Feb. 10 deluxe version of the
Intimate Truth EP are music videos, live concert footage and a bonus, behind-the-scenes video from Ledisi's 2014 The Truth tour with the Robert Glasper Experiment.

Op-Ed: Where Were the Rap Awards During the Grammys?

Op-Ed: Where Were the Rap Awards During the Grammys?

While Jay Z accepted his trophy for best rap/sung collaboration
at the 2014 Grammy Awards, no rap prizes were handed out during this
year's telecast.

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

Sunday's Grammy Awards
reiterated the traditions that accompany celebrating "Music's Biggest
Night": a union of industry veterans and newcomers, the world's most
enviable talent roster and a swath of awards recognizing artists from
music's biggest genres.

Except rap.

Grammys 2015

For the third time in the past four years, the Recording Academy
declined to present a single rap award during the ceremony's live
telecast. Pop, rock, country and R&B categories regularly receive
airtime for at least one of their genre's prizes, but the rap awards are
routinely relegated to the pre-telecast ceremony,
removed from the eyes of all but the most diligent Grammy enthusiasts.
The disparity increases when rap's misfortunes are compared directly
with the prestige given the pop field. Four of the last five ceremonies
have included two televised pop awards, and last year's ceremony
squeezed in a third. (A representative for the Recording Academy could
not be reached by press time to explain rap's awards absence from the
main telecast.)

With more than 70 categories, it's foolish to expect every award to
be presented on-air, but the Recording Academy's prioritization of
certain categories as worthy of coveted airtime suggests to all viewers
-- both industry watchers and casual fans alike -- that these awards are
simply more important. Even if the ceremony's endless runtime is the
suspected culprit, can't the Recording Academy substitute one of its
multiple pop prizes for a rap award? As host LL Cool J
noted during his opening monologue, Sunday's ceremony showcased 23
performances but sprinkled a mere nine awards among them. When the full
award ritual -- reading of the nominees, winner announcement and
acceptance speech -- clocks in at barely half the length of a
performance, is it too much for the Academy to carve a spare two minutes
out of three-and-a-half hours to recognize one of the dominant genres
of music today?

Grammys 2015: The Awards You Didn't See

Unlike most genres in the pre-show telecast, concern surrounding
viewer interest hardly applies to the rap awards. The categories boast
several of today's most popular (and best-selling) acts. In the past few
years alone, Eminem, Kanye West, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Jay Z have graced voters' ballots but rarely received their trophy in front of the camera.

This is hardly the first discord between the Grammys and rap music.
When best rap performance was introduced for the 1989 ceremony, nominees
Heavy D, Salt-N-Pepa and eventual winners DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
boycotted the awards after learning the rap category would be
(surprise!) untelevised. Yet, the also-new best hard rock/metal
performance category secured a place in the lineup. Within the past
decade, however, the rap field earned consistent on-air status. Of the
seven ceremonies between 2005 and 2011, six featured an on-air rap award
presentation, with the sole exception -- 2007 -- remedied by giving two
awards the following year. The sudden break from this pattern reads as a
bizarre change, especially as no other key genre has experienced a
similar decline in fortune.

Grammys 2015: 50 Things You Didn't See on TV

In the past four years, at least one act who triumphed in the pop
field duplicated that success in the general field that contains the
night's biggest prizes: album of the year, record of the year, song of
the year and best new artist. As Sam Smith
discovered Sunday night, the likelihood of these repeats suggests that
pop category winners will arrive onstage at some point in the ceremony.
For their rap counterparts, however, the prospect of multiple trips to
the podium is incredibly slim. As West has decried over the past decade, rap artists rarely land in the winner's circle for the biggest prizes of the night. (Besides Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' win for best new artist last year, rap hasn't scored a major award since Outkast's
album of the year victory in 2004.) As such, rappers whose sole chance
to cross the Grammy stage depends on a televised rap award find
themselves glued to their seats all evening as pop winners race back and
forth to collect awards.

And they'll remain stuck in those seats until the Recording Academy
restores rap to its deserved place among the major genres of the current
era. In an era in which hip-hop is the most-discussed genre of the
most-discussed topic (music) on Twitter, rap albums consistently win
over both buyers and critics, and rap-sung collaborations have reigned
atop the singles charts for 40 percent of the past two years, excluding
it from the televised ceremony accentuates the irony that a leading
genre of our times has little reason to revel in what is continually
advertised as "Music's Biggest Night."

Tiësto on His Grammy and the Future of Dance Music | THUMP

Tiësto at the Grammy Awards. Source: Instagram.

After winning a Grammy for Best Remixed Recording yesterday afternoon
at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Tiësto did not pound shots of
Jägermeister. “I think I OD’d on Jäger,” he jokes. “It’s an amazing
drink but lately I’ve just had enough. Now I’m on to vodka. Pure vodka
shots.”

More than two decades into his illustrative career, Tiësto only
nabbed his first Grammy last night, reflective, perhaps of the Recording
Academy’s well-documented ambivalence about electronic music than of
the artist’s talent. At 46, he has been DJing longer than several of his
protegés (and fans) have been alive. Still, as he bounded to the podium
to collect his trophy from violinist Hilary Hahn, his energy and
seemingly permanent smile belied his age and experience.

“The fact that I’m still around is crazy as well as how much the
world has changed in 20 years,” he admits. “I just always followed my
heart and never got stuck in a certain sounds. Not just to be relevant
but because I wanted to change. I think people see that as coming from a
good place. It still comes from the same heart. The music is just in a
different outfit.”

While he was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 for his album Elements of Life,
this year’s prize, for his remix of John Legend’s “All of Me,” comes at
an interesting time in the DJ’s career. By almost all measures, Tiësto
is at the top of his game. He has a lucrative residency at Hakkasan Las
Vegas, where he plays roughly 30 nights a year, and he headlines the
majority of the world’s major festivals, including several that aren’t
dance music-only. In addition to “All of Me,” he enjoyed a worldwide hit
of his own in 2014 with the Matthew Koma-featuring “Wasted,” taken from
his album A Town Called Paradise. The track came replete with a
confection-colored music video and now Gold-certification in the US.
Despite these successes, he is an artist hungry for more and empowered
with the resources to pursue it.

As one would imagine for one of the wealthiest DJs in the world,
there is a substantial team of people who manage the Business of Tiësto.
Part of that maintenance includes creating space for the artist to be
himself and operate somewhat spontaneously in his own musical world,
even as the whole world (including his over 3 million Twitter followers)
wants a piece of him. From inside this fiercely protected sphere lies
the practically accidental origins of his Grammy-winning record.

“I was in Holland for Christmas in 2013 and someone played me that
song and I right away heard a house tempo,” Tiësto explains. “I heard
the piano and I was like, ‘maybe we should try it with a beat,’ and then
just started experimenting.”

As described in his acceptance speech, he posted the track online for
his fans as a free download and then watched it explode. Legend reached
out and asked to formally release it. Thanks to the radio-friendly
remix, Legend’s formerly sleepy ballad worked it’s way to No. 1 in nine
countries, including the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands,
finishing at No. 3 on Billboard’s year-end singles chart.

But that was last year.

Before the 2015 festival season is in full throttle this summer,
he’ll release a remix of The Weeknd’s “Often” (described as “very deep
house-orientated but with a Tiësto punch”) and another installment in
his Club Life mix series, which he promises will feature both the
familiar and unexpected. Despite potential backlash, that may include
some deep house.

“I’ve been playing deep house since 2011,” Tiësto says. “It’s not
that I’m jumping on the bandwagon. I’m still going to play big room
stuff because I love the energy but I like the combination [of styles],
especially when I play a club. At a festival, I don’t think you’ll hear
me play deep house anytime soon, but when I play Hakkasan, from 1 to 3
AM I play big room and then the last hour I play deep house. It’s an
amazing combination to see the whole crowd mellowing out.”

His
three-hour sets have become sort of a prized possession for a DJ who is
perhaps more widely known for limiting performances on festival stages,
much to his own chagrin. “DJs don’t want to take risks anymore. They’re
going for the safe bets,” he explains. “It doesn’t help that you only
get 45 minutes or an hour. What are you going to do in an hour? Every DJ
should go back to playing two hours and make it really interesting
again. You can vibe out to different styles and sounds. That’s how it
used to be.”

“The whole EDM world is going back to be more musical,” he continues.
“It’s been very technical in the last two years: vocal, break, drop. I
felt like the soul got a little bit lost. Thanks to deep house and
future house, people are reminded [that you can have] energetic,
uplifting tracks but with soul in it, instead of just concepts.”

Anyone who has followed Tiësto’s non-musical profile knows his
affinity for trendcasting isn’t limited to music. In years past, the man
has had fashion partnerships with Armani Exchange and Guess, though now
his tastes have evolved from the mall to the runway, as last night’s
Balmain suit indicates.

“To have a successful fashion brand is one of my goals, but it’s a
long way,” he admits. “I love guys like Olivier Rousteing and his
Balmain stuff. I’ve been wearing a lot of Skingraft lately. I love HBA.”

He says a capsule collection could be in the near future as a prelude
to his own line, though it would be hard to imagine him finding the
time. With near constant touring, he’s rarely in the same place for
long, bouncing primarily between homes in Sweden and New York City. It
was actually his tour schedule that prevented him from attending Grammys
the first time he was nominated. Now, he’s ready to enjoy the moment.

“It’s icing on the cake,” he says of his award. Adding with a smile: “I think I deserve it.”

Zel McCarthy also loves Balmain and is on Twitter.

So The Grammys Were Handed Out Last Night …

The 57th Grammy Awards Winners
Look, I’ll be honest here: I actually have an entire screed I want to
tack on here, but before I do that, let’s get to the list of last
night’s Grammy award winners because hey–good for them–am I right?

Record of the Year: Sam Smith “Stay With Me (Darkchild Version)“

Song of the Year: Sam Smith “Stay With Me (Darkchild Version)“

Album of the Year: Beck Morning Phase

Best New Artist: Sam Smith

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance: A Great Big World w/ Christina Aguilera “Say Something”

Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album: Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga Cheek To Cheek

Best Pop Solo Performance: Pharrell Williams “Happy”

Best Pop Vocal Album: Sam Smith In The Lonely Hour

Best Rock Performance: Jack White “Lazaretto”

Best Rock Album: Beck Morning Phase

Best Rock Song: Paramore “Ain’t It Fun”

Best Alternative Rock Album: St. Vincent St. Vincent

Best Metal Performance: Tenacious D “The Last In Line”

Best Rap Performance: Kendrick Lamar “I“

Best Rap/Sung Collaboration: Eminem Featuring Rihanna “Monster”

Best Rap Song: Kendrick Lamar “I”

Best Rap Album: Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP2

Best R&B Performance: Beyoncé Featuring Jay Z “Drunk In Love”

Best R&B Song: Beyoncé Featuring Jay Z “Drunk In Love”

Best Urban Contemporary Album: Pharrell Williams Girl

Best Music Video: Pharrell Williams “Happy”
You get the gist of things. Anyway, now for my bit: Remember how last night, Kanye West almost went up onstage because Morning Phase won album of the year? And then he went on that big bitch-and-moan fest
about REAL ARTISTS and how they should be respected? And then Twitter
jumped in with the “WHO’S THIS BECK PERSON?” stuff? Well, here’s my
piece: None of this actually matters, so relax. Seriously, celebrities
are basically just imaginary friends for adults. And I should know! I
write about them! All that happened last night was that your imaginary
friend didn’t get their pudding. Maybe you like Beyoncé
more than Beck–or vice versa. Either way, it doesn’t matter, because
both parties will still have long, fulfilling, happy lives with or
without the aforementioned pudding, and slinging personal attacks at
someone over pudding is just childish.

2015 Grammys: 7 Things You Need to Know Before Music's Biggest Night

Iggy Azalea, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande
YouTube
Who's ready to let the music play?!

Yes, we loved
applauding actors and actresses at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
Tonight, however, we're ready to "Shake It Off" and celebrate the best
musical artists of the past year.

Dozens of your favorite
performers will take to the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles
for once in a lifetime collaborations. Some may also pick up a few
prestigious trophies along the way. Yes, we're talking to you Sam Smith.

Before
you get a serious case of #FOMO, we've got you covered! Take a look at
our seven must-see moments before tonight's big show! Happy Grammys
Sunday!

1. Crazy Collaborations: We wish we could mention every duet for tonight's show but how does Sam Smith and Mary J. Blige sound together? Ed Sheeran with John Mayer? What about Beck and Chris Martin?
No matter what musical genre you love, chances are you're going to like
more than a couple of tonight's star-studded performances.

2. Queen Bey's Extravaganza: It's going to be hard to top last year's opening number of "Drunk In Love" with Jay Z Grammy organizers, however, believe Beyoncé
is going to do it. "This will be so dramatically different than
anything you've seen her do in a long time," President/CEO of The
Recording Academy Neil Portnow teased to E! News. "It's really going to be a spectacular moment for us and for her for sure."

3. Kimye in the Building: Yes, we're so pumped to see Kanye West perform his new hit "FourFiveSeconds" with Rihanna and Paul McCartney. But we'd be lying if we weren't curious to see what the rapper and wife Kim Kardashian will be wearing down that red carpet. Plus, we want another look at that drastic haircut North West's mom debuted Friday night.

4. T-Swift's Performance-Free Night: With childhood bestie Abigail Anderson as her date, Taylor Swift
is so ready to fan-out and enjoy tonight's music. In addition to
presenting the award for Best New Artist, the "Style" crooner promises a
whole lot of dancing during the night. "I'll be there having a dance
party/rage fest in the audience," she teased on her Tumblr.

5. Red Carpet Outfits: If there's one thing we know about the Grammys, it's the simple fact that singers like to wow on the red carpet. Whether its Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj or Miley Cyrus, there are a lot of music superstars who likely aren't going to go with a tradition gown. Thank goodness we have Live from the Red Carpet with Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic to give us the best camera views possible.

6. Katy's Post-Game Performance: After overwhelming fans with her amazing Super Bowl halftime performance, you'd think Katy Perry would want a break. Not exactly! Instead, the "Firework" singer is expected to take the stage with domestic violence survivor Brooke Axtell who will perform a written-word piece. Perry, on the other hand, will sing her touching ballad "By the Grace of God."

7. The Voice Takeover:
NBC's popular reality show may not be back until Feb.23. But many of
the popular coaches millions of fans adore will take center stage Sunday
night. While Pharrell Williams and Usher are expected to perform separately, we're extra excited for Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine's collaboration. What do you get when you combine the sounds of Maroon 5 and No Doubt? Guess you have to watch CBS tonight!

John Legend Hits Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart in Wake of GRAMMYs

John Legend Hits Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart in Wake of GRAMMYs
John Legend performs onstage during the 56th GRAMMY Awards at Staples Center on January 26, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images
Following his GRAMMY performance on Sunday (Jan. 26), John Legend scores his fourth top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as "All of Me" jumps 14-8.
Digitally, the song more than doubled its last week total (110%) to 86,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, its best week yet. And because the latest sales week ended the same night as the GRAMMYs, the full impact of his performance won't even be felt until next week.
Pop Shop Podcast: GRAMMY Spectacular
In this week's episode, we dig deep into the 56th GRAMMY Awards. Listen here OR subscribe to the podcast on iTunes HERE .
Additionally, taking 21 weeks to reach the top tier of Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, "All of Me" is the slowest-rising R&B song since Frank Ocean's "Thinkin Bout You" took 30 weeks to do so in 2012.
Legend's last trip to the region was nearly five years ago when Rick Ross' "Magnificent," on which he is featured, peaked at No. 7 (2009). His best showing on the list altogether is his 2005 smash "Ordinary People," which reached No. 4.
At the top of the chart, Eminem's "The Monster" fends off Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" (3-2) for a 13th week at No. 1. Should it hold on for another week, it'll tie Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" for the longest-running rap song atop the list.
Pharrell's feel-good hit "Happy" continues to fly with a 7-3 jump in its fourth week. Reaching 24 million listeners in the Jan. 20-26 Nielsen BDS tracking week (a 139% rise) and moving 188,000 downloads (a 57% increase), the cut takes home Airplay and Digital gainer awards. With Pharrell (and his hat) dominating media attention during and after Sunday's GRAMMY awards -- he took home three trophies while wearing an eye-catching Vivienne Westwood hat -- expect "Happy" to receive a huge boost next week.
Beyonce's "Drunk in Love" falls 2-4 under Derulo and Pharrell's surging songs while Kid Ink's "Show Me" reenters the top five with a 6-5 lift. Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" continues its decline (4-6) in its 25th week after spending five weeks at No. 1 in October and November.
Below John Legend's aforementioned "All of Me" at No. 7 is Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "White Walls" tumbling 5-8 in its 21st week. YG's "My Hitta" slips 8-9 in its 18th week while Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" holds on at No. 10 for its 37th week in the region. The longest running top 10 hit on the list is "Thrift Shop" with 42 weeks.
Outside of the top 10, the anticipation for Schoolboy Q's "Oxymoron," due Feb.25, is apparent as three new tracks made available as album pre-orders debut.Second single "Man of the Year" opens at No. 21 with 35,000 downloads (up 615%), according to Nielsen SoundScan, while album cuts "Break the Bank" (No.33 debut, 27,000) and "Yay Yay" (No. 46, 19,000) also enter the list. Meanwhile, now-recurrent lead single "Collard Greens," featuring Kendrick Lamar (No. 28 peak in November) has its best sales week to date, moving 29,000 (up 267%) as a result of it also being included among Q's album pre-order offering.
On Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Beyonce's self-titled set holds at No. 1 with 48,000 (down 22%) as does Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" at No. 2 with 24,000 (down 16%). Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "The Heist" enjoys an early GRAMMYs boost with a 38% increase to 18,000 copies. It too will benefit from a full week of exposure after the Seattle duo took home four GRAMMYs, practically sweeping the Rap categories.
Drake's "Nothing was the Same" stays put at No. 4 with a 2$ rise to 15,000 units and R. Kelly closes out the top five with a 3-5 dip (11,000, down 27%). Notably, Ty Dolla $ign's "Beach House" EP and Step Brothers (Evidence x Alchemist)'s "Lord Steppington" debut at Nos. 13 and 14 with 6,000 and 5,000 copies, respectively.

Kendrick Lamar on Macklemore’s GRAMMY Wins: ‘It's Well-Deserved’

Kendrick Lamar is taking a philosophical approach to being shut out at the GRAMMY Awards.
Lamar, one of Sunday night's top nominees with seven nods, was shut out, prompting four-time winner Macklemore to send a text of apology later that night after winning best rap album.
"It's well-deserved. He did what he did, man," Lamar told XXL magazine. "He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason. The universe comes back around. That's how it go."
Lamar made the remarks after a performance of "Backstreet Freestyle" at rapper Dom Kennedy's show Tuesday night in New York. They come two days after The Recording Academy's voters gave Macklemore & Ryan Lewis three trophies in the rap categories, angering some in the hip-hop community. Macklemore and Lewis also won best new artist.
There was an effort by the academy's rap committee to exclude Macklemore and Lewis from the rap categories, but it was overruled and the Seattle duo won best rap album for "The Heist" and best rap song and rap performance for "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz - a pop hit that sold more than 7 million copies.
Macklemore said before the awards that he felt Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d. city" should win best rap album. He posted to Instagram a text he sent to Lamar following the awards that said in part: "It's weird and sucks that I robbed you."
XXL also asked Lamar if he felt the GRAMMYS undervalued hip-hop. Only three rappers - Jay Z, Macklemore and Lewis, and Lamar - performed during the telecast. All three were show highlights for different reasons.
"I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre," Lamar said. "We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the GRAMMYS, should always push for more hip-hop because it's music as a whole, it's not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that's how it goes. And we are a part of that."

Lorde -- Dear New Zealand, I'm Back with 2 Freakin' Grammys

0128-lorde-getty
Lorde just flew back to her homeland Tuesday like a conquering hero -- armed with 2 Grammy Awards ... and a ridiculously nice handwritten thank you to her fellow Kiwis.

Lorde took out a full page in the New Zealand Herald for the note -- fresh off winning Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Gotta say ... the 17-year-old scribbled a pretty damn charming note: "Without your support, there's no way I would ever have gotten to stand in the middle of the Staples Centre & perform in my school shoes."

You can call her Queen Bee.

Grammy Winners 2014: The Full List

It was a "Lucky" night for Daft Punk.
The robot-headed duo won record of the year for the hit "Get Lucky" and album of the year for "Random Access Memories" at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday night.
Daft Punk was typically silent, but singer-songwriter Paul Williams accepted the album of the year award with a generous speech.
Williams, who's written such songs as "We've Only Just Begun" and "Evergreen," had struggled to overcome substance abuse problems over the years. "Then I get sober and two robots asked me to make an album," he said.

Pharrell Williams, who sang on "Get Lucky," accepted the award for record of the year.
The Grammys also often manage to single out rising artists, and this year that meant Lorde, Kacey Musgraves and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Lorde earned the third of the big three awards, song of the year, for "Royals." The honor is a songwriters' award.
"Thank you to everyone who has let the song explode," she said, also paying tribute to co-writer Joel Little. She also won a Grammy for best pop solo performance.
Musgraves won for best country album.
Macklemore & Lewis, who were nominated for seven awards, won four at Grammy Awards.
"I want to thank our fans, the people that got us on this stage," said Macklemore in accepting the award for best new artist.
The pair also took home rap album ("The Heist"), rap performance and rap song (both for "Thrift Shop"). Macklemore & Lewis beat out some tough competition in the rap categories. Their album was up against offerings from Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and "Thrift Shop" defeated songs by Jay Z and Kanye West.
Both Daft Punk and Macklemore & Lewis are up for the last of the major three honors, album of the year.
Jay Z, who led all artists with nine nominations, did win best rap/sung collaboration for "Holy Grail," a collaboration with Justin Timberlake.
Addressing his daughter Blue, Jay Z said, "Daddy just got a gold sippy cup for you."
Macklemore & Lewis' "Same Love," a song written in support of same-sex marriage, was performed on a set resembling a church. Macklemore's rap was followed by a mass wedding featuring 33 couples taking the stage of Los Angeles' Staples Center.
Queen Latifah officiated, and Madonna served as maid of honor, following Latifah's exhortions with "Open Your Heart." The crowd roared its approval as the couples made their way back up the aisle.
The show was full of such notable performances. A highlight was a performance of "Get Lucky" featuring Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers and song originators Daft Punk, who lurked in a "control room" in their robot helmets. "Get Lucky" won a Grammy for pop duo/group performance, and Daft Punk won two early Grammys for its album "Random Access Memories," one for its engineering, the other in the dance electronic category.
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award for their work with the Beatles, both played. Starr did his "Photograph" with musicians including Peter Frampton and Kenny Aronoff, and McCartney did his new song "Queenie Eye" with a group that included Starr.
Most awards were given out before the show.
Adele, a big winner two years ago, won yet another Grammy, this time for her "Skyfall" theme song. Other winners include Ziggy Marley (reggae album); Stephen Colbert (spoken word); and Terri Lyne Carrington (jazz instrumental album).
Gold and black dominated the gowns on the red carpet, though Paris Hilton -- in a side-baring white number -- was among the most showy.
Producer and vocalist Pharrell Williams, who showed up wearing an oversized forest ranger-style hat, earned plenty of fashion attention on Twitter. In fact, @PharrellHat had more than 5,000 followers and @PharrellsHat had more than 400 within an hour of the show starting.
Perhaps someone will not start an account for "robot heads."
