The track claims the longest lead for a female this year and takes over atop the Radio Songs chart. Meanwhile, Eminem storms into the Hot 100's top 10 with 'Rap God '
Lorde's "Royals" sits in the Billboard Hot 100's throne for a fourth week, establishing the longest rule by a woman this year, and reaches No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart. Eminem, meanwhile, debuts in the Hot 100's top 10 with "Rap God."
As we do each Wednesday, let's look deeper at the numbers.
As "Royals" crowns the Hot 100 for a fourth frame, it grants Lorde the longest-leading No. 1 by a woman in 2013. The song passes the three-week reign of P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason" (featuring Nate Ruess) in April/May. Among all acts, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell, boasts the year's longest command: 12 weeks, from June through September. No song by a female has led longer than "Royals" since Carly Rae Jepsen's fellow first hit "Call Me Maybe" linked nine weeks at No. 1 last year.
"Royals" tops the Hot 100 aided, in part, by its 2-1 rise on Radio Songs, as it gains by 5% to 167 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. It's the first maiden entry by a female to control Radio Songs since Ellie Goulding's "Lights" led for five weeks in August/September 2012. ("Lights" peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for two weeks.)
"Royals" leads the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart for a third week with 2.8 million on-demand U.S. streams, according to BDS (down less than 1%). The activity helps keep it at its No. 3 peak to date on the overall Streaming Songs chart (7.5 million U.S. streams, down 6%).
"Royals" slips 1-2 on Digital Songs after four weeks on top with 256,000 downloads sold (down 13%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs ranking for an eighth week.
Lorde's hit maintains its dominance over Katy Perry's former two-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Roar," which rebounds 3-2. "Roar" dips 1-2 on Radio Songs (156 million, down 4%) after four weeks at the summit and 2-3 on Digital Songs (189,000, down 4%), while bulleting at No. 4 on Streaming Songs (6 million, up 3%).
Perry's album "PRISM" was released yesterday (Oct. 22) and should debut atop next week's Billboard 200. (Our weekly Wednesday story previewing next week's Billboard 200 in detail will post later today.) Next "PRISM" single "Unconditionally" should reach the Hot 100 soon, as it's the top debut, at No.54, on Radio Songs with 22 million in first-week audience.
Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball," which, like "Roar," topped the Hot 100 for two weeks, descends 2-3 with top Airplay Gainer honors for a second week. The ballad bounds 9-6 on Radio Songs (94 million, up 15%). It adds top Digital Gainer kudos (165,000), while departing the top perch on Streaming Songs after four nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 (10 million, down 24%).
Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" holds at its No. 4 peak on the Hot 100. It remains at its No. 3 highpoint on Radio Songs (139 million, up 4%), gains by 15% to 184,000 downloads sold (despite backtracking 4-5 on Digital Songs) and climbs 9-8 on Streaming Songs (4.3 million, up 6%). It leads Dance/Electronic Songs for a seventh week.
Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" (featuring Majid Jordan) stays at No. 5 on the Hot 100, while Ylvis' "The Fox" likewise holds at No. 6. The latter track returns to the top of Streaming Songs for a second total week at No. 1 (10.9 million, down 8%).
Eminem blasts onto the Hot 100 at No. 7 with "Rap God," which starts on Digital Songs at No. 1 with 270,000. It also opens atop Rap Songs. The track is the third to receive a digital release ahead of his album "The Marshall Mathers LP," due Nov. 5. "Berzerk" logged a No. 3 Hot 100 and No. 2 Digital Songs debut with 362,000, followed by "Survival" last week (No. 17/No. 7, 112,000). "Rap God" is Eminem's first Digital Songs No. 1 as a lead artist since "Love the Way You Lie" (featuring Rihanna) spent seven weeks in charge in 2010.
Eminem's new song also marks his seventh top 10 start on the Hot 100, pushing him past Lil Wayne (six) for the most among men in the chart's 55-year history. Among all acts, only Taylor Swift has made more such grand entrances (11). (She'll aim to add to her sum next week with new song "Sweeter Than Fiction," from the movie "One Chance.")
Jay Z's No. 4 hit "Holy Grail" (featuring Justin Timberlake) dips 7-8 on the Hot 100. It falls to No. 2 after 11 weeks at No. 1 on Rap Songs.
(Potential blasphemy alert: Lorde, "Rap God" and "Holy Grail" are all in the Hot 100's top 10 …)
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Lady Gaga's No. 4-peaking "Applause" drops 8-9 and Thicke's "Blurred Lines" retreats 9-10. This week marks the latter song's 21st week in the top 10, tying Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' former six-week No.1 "Thrift Shop" (featuring Wanz) for the most frames in the top 10 this year.(The all-time record to beat? LeAnn Rimes' No. 2 hit "How Do I Live" spent 32 weeks in the top tier in 1997-98.)
