OK … so The Dark Knight Rises is STILL in movie theaters but today we are hearing that plans are in the works to reboot the Batman film franchise in just a few short years. While this may sound grossly unnecessary on the surface, a rebooted Batman series is actually a good idea … and let me tell you why. For years, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have been trying to find a way to bring the superhero group The Justice League to the big screen. After the huge success of Marvel Comics bringing their superhero group The Avengers to the silver screen, it makes sense that DC is now anxious to get the ball rolling. Christopher Nolan has said that he is done making Batman films … but Batman is one of the key members of The Justice League. In order for WB and DC to move forward with a Justice League movie, they need a new Batman … which is where the reboot comes in.
We have some more news to share with you, and this time it is in regards to the reboot of the Batman franchise. Previously, news came out about the Justice League Movie being written by Will Beall, and we were informed that the upcoming Man of Steel movie would be spearheading a new DC shared universe. With The Dark Knight Rises being the last of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, Warner Bros. is obviously looking to reboot the Batman franchise. I’m told that a new Batman movie might be slated for 2016 following the Justice League Movie, and it will not be an origin story (like Amazing Spider-Man), but will feature a Batman who is entering his second year as a hero. The film may also be called “The Batman,” though I can’t be sure on that as the 2004 animated series was of the same title which featured a Batman in his third year. Also, this new Batman will be part of the same shared DC Universe that features the Justice League Movie as well as having Henry Cavill in the role of Superman in Justice League and subsequent sequels to the Man of Steel.
I know that a LOT of people will bristle at the idea of a new Batman film franchise because, really, can anyone outdo Christopher Nolan? No. But if a Justice League film is ever gonna happen, there needs to be a new Batman. With Man of Steel leading the way, the plan appears to work on a series of stand alone films based on Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and other members of The Justice League so that film can get made. Conversely, a Justice League film can come relatively soon and then spin-off films for the various characters may follow. Superman and Batman are the leaders of The Justice League, so they need to be cemented in place for a Justice League film to happen. The idea of a reboot so soon may sound terrible but, in the long run, it may be necessary.
