Well here's an interesting game of six degrees of separation: The protege of a mentor drops an album today, and is up against the wife of his mentor's mentor. Did that make sense? Let's add some names to this soap opera: Big Sean's "Finally Famous" hits stores and digital outlets today along with Beyonce's "4." Beyonce is the wife of Jay-Z, who is the mentor of Kanye West, who is the mentor of Sean.
There's a good chance that the Detroit rapper could edge out Beyonce for a high placing on next week's Billboard chart: The latter's album was leaked online weeks ago, and response to the set's first single, "Run the World (Girls)" has been lukewarm. There's also Beyonce's insistence that this album is an eclectic, "new genre" of music, which calls to mind the failure of "Bionic" from Christina Aguilera, who had expressed similar sentiments.
Then again, Sean is a new artist who has made little impact on the all-important pop charts. Though buzzworthy, Sean didn't have any instant hits like his tourmate Wiz Khalifa, nor the slow burn of his mentor. An appearance at this weekend's BET Awards did help, but was overshadowed by other talked-about performances.
Both Beyonce and Sean could be topped by Limp Bizkit, who is returning from an eight-year hiatus with their newest, "Gold Cobra." And Adele's "21," released months ago, has held down the top spot almost each week since its release and could repeat next week.
