Kendrick Lamar has made the biggest vault to No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 since the list launched eight months ago, rocketing 82-1 for his first week on top, powered by sales of his new album.
The Artist 100 is the first weekly survey dedicated to measuring artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Lamar bests the 69-1 Artist 100 surge of Taylor Swift, whom he dethrones after 19 weeks at the summit, as she slips to No. 2. Swift established the previous record jump when her 1989 bowed at No. 1 on Top Album Sales (Sept. 6, 2014). Likewise, Lamar's charge to No. 1, with a 2,248 percent gain in activity, according to Nielsen Music, is owed largely to To Pimp a Butterfly's debut at No. 1 on Top Album Sales (324,000); album sales account for 82 percent of his Artist 100 points sum.
Meanwhile, Lamar, who had previously ranked as high as No. 30, is the second rapper to lead the Artist 100. He follows Drake (now at No. 5), who reigned for two weeks beginning Feb. 28.
Joining Lamar, Swift and Drake in the Artist 100's top five, Maroon 5 drops 2-3 and Ed Sheeran holds at No. 4.
Among other notable Artist 100 action, Aaron Bruno-led AWOLNATION returns at a new high of No. 33. The arrival of sophomore album Run spurs the re-entry, as it starts at No. 9 on Top Album Sales with 30,000 first-week copies sold. AWOLNATION had spent a week on the Artist 100 at No. 88 in February as the release's lead single, "Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)," was beginning its ascent at rock radio; this week, the track bullets at its No. 4 high on the Alternative Songs chart.
AWOLNATION's 2011 debut, Megalithic Symphony, which yielded the steadily-built crossover hit "Sail," has sold 590,000 since its release. | Billboard
