you're scouting for a new place to live. Maybe you're just trying to
assess where you live currently. Either way, here are ten of the safest
major cities around the globe.
In their "Safe Cities Index 2015," The Economist Intelligence Unit
(EIU) used 44 specific indicators to decide how safe certain cities are.
They then divided these into four main safety categories:
- Digital security: Identity theft, online privacy
- Health security: Environment, air and water quality
- Infrastructure safety: Buildings, roads, bridges
- Personal safety: Crime, violence
data, which was based on interviews and information from sources like
the World Health Organization. They only looked at some of the world's biggest cities, and not every city in the world is included on this list.
It's still interesting to see how these cities stack up, just keep this
in mind if a particular city isn't included on this list. Per the
study:
The Index focuses on 50 cities (see box over the page for the fullThe top 10 cities, of those they studied:
list and regional breakdown) selected by The Economist Intelligence Unit
(EIU), based on factors such as regional representation and
availability of data. Therefore, it should not be considered a
comprehensive list of the world's safest cities.
- Tokyo
- Singapore
- Osaka
- Stockholm
- Amsterdam
- Sydney
- Zurich
- Toronto
- Melbourne
- New York
shows the safest cities for digital security, or the safest cities in
North America. If you're surprised to see any of the cities on the list,
you might find their insights on public perceptions of safety
interesting.
