Final Box Office: The box office has caught TMNT fever: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has won the top spot for the second straight week, conquering Guardians of the Galaxy to retain the No. 1 spot. This, despite threats from The Expendables 3, which disappointed in a huge way.
Despite taking a 54 percent drop in its second weekend, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
raked in $28.4 million to bring its domestic total of $117.6 million.
With the additional $25.6 million factoring into the $67.5 million the
film has earned overseas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now has a worldwide gross of $185.1 million. So expect the film to cross the $200 million threshold. And soon.
But not sooner than Disney and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy,
which reached that milestone in this, its third weekend. The film came
in at No. 2 with $24.7 million, a total that pushed the film’s gross to
$222.3 million in North America. Globally, the film has surpassed $400
million. So despite the film’s difficulty in regaining the top spot it
proudly held in its first week, it’s not exactly hurting at the box
office right now.
However, the same can’t be said for The Expendables 3. The action sequel debuted to a tepid $16.2 million, a major hit from the $28.6 million debut of The Expendables 2
in August 2012. The studio is hoping the film will recoup its
investment in overseas ticket sales, since these films have mostly cost
around $90 million to produce. But the good news here is that The Expendables 2 took in $220.4 million in international ticket sales, so if The Expendables 3
is able to do even half of the gross of its predecessor, it should be
able to at least make its budget back. But given this soft North
American opening, that’s easier said than done. And I’m sure the studio
was expecting a much healthier debut than this.
That said, The Expendables 3 was still the best performer among this weekend’s newcomers, outgrossing No. 4 entry Let’s Be Cops, and Young Adult film adaptation The Giver, which landed at No. 5.
