As a result of her long, well-documented battle with alcoholism, Elizabeth Vargas has checked back into rehab.
Vargas, a co-anchor on the long-running news magazine 20/20, in
addition to duties as an ABC News correspondent, checked herself into
rehab Saturday for alcohol issues. This is her second time checking into
rehab in a year, following her previous stint in November 2013.
“While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery
center,” said the 51-year-old journalist in a statement. “As so many
other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long
and incredibly difficult process.
“I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my
family down, and for that I am ashamed and sorry,” Vargas added. “I am
committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want
to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this
trying time.”
Of course, ABC is 100% behind Vargas in her journey toward recovery.
“Nothing is more important than Elizabeth’s health and well-being,
and we stand squarely behind her,” said ABC spokeswoman Heather Riley in
a statement. “Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family, and we
look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to
return.”
Our thoughts are with Vargas, and we wish her all the best in her struggle as she hopefully heads toward a full recovery.
