My brain melted on Saturday night and I can blame it all on Scarlett Johansson in the Luc Besson-directed Lucy. But I’m not the only one; the female-led film bested the box office beating out even the baby oil-covered Hercules. Hollywood, let us use this opportunity to once again remind you that ladies like movies!
Besson has a cult following thanks to previous films like The Professional, La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element, which no doubt partially accounted for his success this weekend, but nothing in his filmography left my mouth hanging open like Lucy. The action-filled, neuroscience-nerd screenplay kept my attention...and the ending? Forget it. I loved it.
But the takeaway for Hollywood? Women Can Carry Movies That Make Money. Clearly. Give us girls more lady-led movies and we will offer up our hard earned coins. And this request is not just for films like Sense and SensibilitySteel Magnolias,Aliens or even Bridesmaids. Surprise us, Hollywood brass, and even give a new filmmaker the chance to entertain us — if you fund it, we will come.
