Even Pharrell Williams can’t escape the power of Oprah and the infamous “Ugly Cry!”
On Sunday night, Oprah Winfrey sat down with the musician on Oprah Prime, where Williams spoke about the out-of-nowhere success of his enormously popular smash. The humble Voice
mentor, 41, was overcome with emotion and cried tears of joy after the
Queen of Talk surprised him with a compilation of heart-warming “Happy”
fan videos from across the globe.
It wasn’t always happy times for the super producer. Pharrell was
more than a little worried about the tune after it was initially
released late last year, as part of the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. When it came to radio play, “Happy” was getting nothing but dead air.
“Zero air-play, nothing. And the next thing you know, we
put out the video on November 21 and all of a sudden–boom. I mean, when I
say boom, I mean boooooom. And we were like, what’s happening? First of
all, people are putting up their own videos. It was like no longer my
song.”
