Lorde
The Kansas City protest at the "Royals" singer's show is the church's first since the death of founder Fred Phelps.
Westboro Baptist Church protesters took to Kansas City to picket Lorde'sconcert at the Midland Theater on Friday night, staging their first protest since thedeath of their founder, Fred Phelps, on Wednesday.
According to a previously received statement, the church objects to the New Zealand "Royals" singer's stage name and how she "spends her time, energy and talent serving herself and teaching other young people how to be indolent rebels" through her lyrics and press interviews. The church has long been anenemy of Hollywood, protesting against Glee star Cory Monteith and film criticRoger Ebert and opposing concerts by artists like Young the Giant and Vince Gill.
However, their messages were met with a positive counterprotest on the scene, as a group held up signs for the church that read "Sorry for your loss" nearby:
Before her concert, the singer addressed the protest announcement via Twitter, saying "hahaha omg just found out westboro baptist church are going to picket my show in kansas city … everyone wear rainbow clothing to that show … everyone try to kiss church members who are same sex as you they will so love it christmas comin early in kansas city." She then deleted the tweets.
