Yes! Best Original Song category is alive and well on the Oscar telecast. The Academy had earlier announced that performances from the nominated artists would be moved to a concert held several days before the ceremony, meaning we’d be left with a mostly-tuneless Oscar show. But that’s apparently not going to be the case at all!
Pharrell Williams, nominated for “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 , has joined the roster of performers for the 86th Academy Awards. Pharrell had previously served as a music consultant for the Academy Awards, but this will mark his first time actually taking the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. If Pharrell takes home Oscar gold, he’d be only the third hip-hop artist to do so after Eminem’s win for “Lose Yourself” (from 2002′s 8 Mile) and Three Six Mafia for “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” (from 2005′s Hustle & Flow).
No other performers have been announced just yet, but the Best Original Song category is packed with potential ratings-attracting talent. U2 is nominated for “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, while both Idina Menzel and Demi Lovato lent their vocals to “Let It Go” from Frozen (by nominees Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez). Also nominated is “The Moon Song” from Her, by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ lead singer Karen O.
Of course, the category is short one nominee due to the disqualification of “Alone Yet Not Alone” (from the film of the same name), a decision stemming from songwriter Bruce Broughton’s illegal lobbying during the voting period. A replacement nominee will not be named.
The 86th Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air Sunday, Mar. 2 on ABC.
