But wait! Wasn’t her 2009 conviction overturned in 2011 when an appeals court decided that the evidence was circumstantial at best? Chick’s been home in Seattle for a while now and even wrote her memoirs on the whole thing.
Well apparently it doesn’t work like that in Italy. This is the same court (well, not the same judge and jury, but same “level” of court, so to speak) that originally tried her case. It then went to a higher court to confirm or overturn the conviction. That’s what happened in 2011.
So instead of dropping it, they sent it back down to the lower court and told them to try again and prosecute her another way. Now it will go back up to the higher court one more time.
Does anyone else have headache yet? Also, I kinda want to wrap myself in an American flag and warble the Star Spangled Banner right now.

Anyway. So what happens now? It’s going to create a tricky situation if Italy issues an extradition order for Amanda, because the U.S. has an extradition agreement with Italy. However, we also have a policy against double jeopardy, which this clearly was, even if they’re not calling it that. So it’s hard to say what exactly happens next.
All I know is if I were Amanda Knox, I’d be Googling, “countries that don’t have an extradition agreement with Italy” like crazy right now.
