I love henna tattoos. I think they're so beautiful. I used to think all henna tattoos were harmless until I found out about black henna.
Henna is not supposed to be black. If it's black then it stains the skin because it functions as dye. The black dye is probably para-phenylenediamine is PPD (synthetic coal-dye), which is corrosive and will cause the area of the skin with the tattoo to break out with blisters for some people.
If the tattoo takes less than a half hour to stain your skin and if the henna is mixed with peroxide, or if peroxide is wiped over the design then it probably contains PPD.
Black henna is illegal in the United States, but that is difficult to enforce considering places that do henna tattoos still use it.
Since it's summer and a lot of people like to get henna tattoos during this season, if you're one of them make sure to ask to see the ingredients of the henna before it is put on your body, to make sure that it's not black henna.
If by some chance you do get a black henna tattoo and the tattoo area begins to itch or burn you must go to a doctor immediately.
