Record executive Clive Davis reveals for the first time publicly that he is bisexual. In his new memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life, released today, the famed music man comes out for the first time at age 80. Apparently, after a drunken fling with a man during his Studio 54 days, Davis ended up in several long term relationships with men following his divorces.
I debated even posting this as “news,” considering the bulk of his book is apparently dedicated to the vast array of superstar artists he’s worked with and influenced, including Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. (American Idol fans will also remember Clive’s infamous clashing with Kelly Clarkson over her album My December, which took a darker direction musically.) I decided to go ahead and post anyway because I think it’s important to remind people out there that public figures are human beings, too. Even at age 80, it’s still cool to see someone as big in the music industry as Clive Davis finally speaking openly about his bisexuality. Plus, I don’t think this was a secret from loved ones in his personal life, at least not for a while. This includes his son, whom Clive notes in his book as being initially unreceptive. The two eventually smoothed things over.
I can’t wait until this is a complete nonissue. (Part of me wanted to write a post on how the rest of his memoir was tossed aside while the few pages or so dedicated to this made headlines this morning.) Hopefully, we can get to a place sometime soon where little gay kids everywhere don’t feel the need to wait until their senior years to fully accept themselves. Having someone as successful as Clive Davis come out publicly shows those same young people that they can be happily gay and still get whatever they want from life. Granted, he didn’t find success while out, but he’ll still be remembered now as bisexual. Of course, I’m assuming Davis is indeed fulfilled after earning tremendous respect and accolades and developing a good relationship with his family today. Thus, I’m happy to help make this a little piece of news, at least for now, and I’m hoping Clive is too.
