San Diego police have confirmed they detained a 33-year-old white man on Thursday after getting reports at 11:30 a.m. he was running naked in the street, blocking traffic, screaming incoherently and performing a sex act in public.
The man detained is reported to be Jason Russell, the 33-year-old filmmaker behind the controversial Kony 2012 viral video, and the co-founder of the charity Invisible Children.
Police are not releasing the name of the man who was detained and transferred without incident to a medical facility, said Lt. Andra Brown.
A NBC San Diego news report says the man in question was Mr. Russell, and he was detained because he was drunk and masturbating.
The man who was detained did not appear to be under the influence of any substance, Lt. Brown said, adding that many of those who called police seemed concerned about the man’s welfare.
“The officers determined his irrational and bizarre behaviour was more of a medical matter to be treated,” Lt. Brown told the National Post.
“There were several callers and one of them said he was naked and masturbating. Officers did not witness that.”
No charges were laid against the man.
While the news was swiftly re-tweeted and posted to Facebook, many questioned whether the story was actually a joke.
