If predictions are anything to go by it appears consumers are finally fed up with Rihanna‘s “just add water” approach to making music. Fans of the chart topper were hopeful ‘Talk That Talk’ would finally earn Rihanna the top spot and some impressive opening week numbers. Unfortunately, like it’s musical content, ‘Talk That Talk’‘s album sales are also so set to disappoint.
See the sales predictions for Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk’, as well as Mary J. Blige‘s ‘My Life II: The Journey Continues (Act 1)’ after the jump!
‘Talk That Talk’ is predicted to open with 180K-200K in the Top 3. On paper those numbers don’t sound too bad, however, compared to the Midas Touch her singles have, there’s no reason why she isn’t selling at least twice as much. “We Found Love” for example sold well over a million copies by it’s second week alone. Besides her easily satisfied Navy, Rihanna just can’t seem to drum up enough interest from the general buying public to purchase her albums. Compared to Beyonce‘s ’4′ which beat the odds by debuting at No. 1 and selling a respectable 310K without a solitary hit single.
Def Jam no stranger to using just about every trick in the book to ensure a No. 1 debut, like hacking ‘Rated R’‘s retail price to $2.99 or annual album releases during US holiday seasons—still all efforts have been fruitless. If these numbers do indeed turn out to be true come next week, at least Rihanna and her Navy can rest their laurels on the fact that she is consistent if nothing else. ‘Rated R’ debuted at No. 4 with 181K units sold, and ‘Loud’ similarly a year later at No. 3 with 207K.
By Nickelback emerging [out of nowhere] as next week’s unexpected wig snatcher, the question remains…will Rihanna ever have a No. 1 album? In other news, Mary J. Blige’s recent lack of buzz implied no one was checking for her latest “tear-jerker set to music” by the name of ‘My Life II’. MJB is predicted to sell a measly 120K-140K units, confirming that no one was checking. Talk that talk below—what do you think of these numbers?
