To Kylie, Aphrodite is like one big throbbing heart, defined by “love, defiance and joy”. In that way, lead single ‘All The Lovers’ is a perfect introduction to the album. “It’s really difficult to choose the first single,” she muses. “But ‘All The Lovers’ is like an invitation to the album, so I think we made the right choice – it’s important to lead with a song that’s saying something.”Indeed, the track is quite explicit in its message – feel love, share love, love in all its forms. The accompanying Joseph Kahn-directed video – a Spencer Tunick-esque piece of Dionysian revelry that features Kylie holding court as the goddess of sexuality atop a pansexual, orgiastic human pyramid (like Maryann from True Blood!!!!!)– powerfully reinforces this sentiment. And, with gay couples taking pride of place amongst their straight peers, it has been seen as a powerful symbol of sexual liberation.
“The idea was just epic love,” Kylie says. “I think it’s beautiful – and of course it’s a little titillating and sexy. In that mass of people, you didn’t know who was straight or gay or bi, and no one cared. Love is love is love.”
I tell Kylie about the pre-release listening party Warner Music hosted for Aphrodite. Almost gayer than Mardi Gras itself, the event was an outrageously camp spectacle of fog machines, mirror balls, blue lycee Kylie cocktails, and throngs of adoring gay men letting out shrieks and squeals so high you’d think they had been robbed of their lower registers. It’s no secret she is a gay icon who has almost reached the giddy heights of Judy and Liza, but what exactly is it with Kylie and the gays?
“It’s been a long-time love affair for sure,” she laughs. “I was adopted pretty early on in the story! In the early days, a lot of people who liked me had to be in the closet. So you had to come out as a gay person, and then you had to come out as someone who liked Kylie!
“Those early days [in the industry] weren’t always pleasant for me, and there was a lot of vitriol at certain points, and the gay audience always came to my defence.”
Kylie first performed at Mardi Gras in 1994, and then again with her sister Dannii in 1998. Will she ever return to gay Mecca? “Yeah, absolutely,” she says lovingly. “Oh God! As and when I do that, I’ll be full of such joy. I would love to be there again and share that with everyone.
“I was recently in Madrid for Gay Pride there, and they have gay marriage there – they’ve had it for about five years. I had to address the press there, and I just said congratulations. It was really heart-warming. As I said before, love is love, so of course I believe in gay marriage.”
Kylie has also travelled back home on sisterly duties after Dannii gave birth to baby Ethan on July 5. With her Spanish-model boyfriend Andres Velencoso in tow, Kylie is now playing doting aunty. “He’s just adorable,” she gushes. “And he’s the most famous two and a half week old in the world!”The next single off Aphrodite will be ‘Get Outta My Way’, which is just begging for the dance floor. Indeed, it seems to be the consensus amongst Kylie die-hards that the song is the highlight of the album. But Kylie is coy about the video. “It’s not undecided,” she says. “I know who’s directing it, but I probably won’t do it any justice to explain it at this stage. But it’s nothing like ‘All The Lovers’ – it’s more about lighting and dance.”
I HAPPEN TO SEE KYLIE DURING HER STOP HERE IN MANILA AND FOUND HER SO ENTHRALLING! SO CAPTIVATED BY HER BEAUTY, TALENT AND SHOWMANSHIP i HAVE DECIDED TO REPOST SOME TIDBIT INFO ON HER LATEST OUTTING TO SHARE IT WITH HER FANS AND ADMIRERS ALIKE!
