“Prosecution for previous wrongdoings must be carried out to the full but such must be done in pursuit of justice not revenge. Political vendetta divides even more," Villegas said at a Rotary speech in Dagupan City on Thursday.
Villegas is the incoming vice president of the CBCP. He will assume his CBCP post next Dec. 1. He was an aide of the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, a key figure in the 1986 EDSA revolt.
The archbishop advised Aquino that he may need much more than integrity to lead the country well.
“In the ‘balanced square’ of leadership, the other three sides must be economic progress and stability; second, political will and clarity of laws; and the third is availability of education and social services," Villegas said.
“If these three sides are given equal support connected by integrity and blameless living, even integrity itself will become part of our national ethics and the rays of bright future await us," the archbishop added.
Villegas also said leadership without vision is "treachery to the governed."
He stressed leadership must "embrace and unite" instead of "alienate and divide." —
