The unfolding nuclear crisis in Japan has called attention to nuclear-power production in the world, reminding us of past disasters and accidents, and bringing increased scrutiny onto this source of energy.
Considering the potential for damage that radioactive fallout from a single nuclear hot spot can cause, we got to wondering about the locales with the highest density of nuclear energy production, as measured by net total MWe (megawatt electric) capacity. Power plant output is measured in MWe, an amount that is equivalent to the overall thermal power multiplied by the plant's efficiency (which is generally somewhere around 33%).
Though the United States has more reactors than any other country by several dozen, no single site (besides one) is especially big, and even that one pales in comparison to other plants around the world. And two countries in particular dominate the list with three sites each.
As Japan attempts to avert meltdown, we present the world's top 10 nuclear hot spots.
