Justin Bieber’s recent DUI arrest, prompts new concerns about the dangerous drink, which many believe he possibly has an addiction to.
This homemade drink is called sizzurp — a cough syrup mixture that young people are using to get high. Cough medicine is one of the key ingredients in sizzurp which is also mixed with codeine, Sprite and a Jolly Rancher.
Peggy Kinamore with the Missouri Poison Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, says that the overdoses can be accompanied by many complications.
“People who are abusing sizzurp, it can make them incoherent, it can make them drowsy, it can make them have possibly some out-of-body sensations. Then what we worry about is that they can stop breathing,” says Kinamore.
She also says parents need to remind their kids about the dangers of abusing prescription medications.
“If they are taken properly, that’s effective, but when people overdose on them, it can actually stop the breathing. It can depress respiration, so that’s the risk,” says Kinamore.
Last year, the Missouri Poison Center dealt with seven cases of sizzurp overdoses.
