Things are about to get complicated at Samsung HQ. Not only has the smartphone giant announced a handful of Android 2.3-toting smartphones, but there's also a new naming system to grapple with. The handsets in question are the Galaxy Y, Y-Pro, M-Pro and W. M for example, stands for Magical – high performance models with affordable price tags. W refers to Wonder, or rather high-quality handsets aimed at those looking to strike a balance between style and performance. Lastly, Y refers to Young, representing the entry-level end of its smartphone range. Once permanently etched in your brain, you should, in theory, be able to ascertain what you're getting from a phone without needing to check its price and spec list.
So, we're looking at a couple of entry-level smarties in the form of the Galaxy Y (above, left) and Y-Pro (above, right). With specs like an 832MHz CPU and 2MP snapper, the Y isn't out to impress, but Swype, Touchwiz and Hubs support make for a decent user experience. As we've come to expect from 'pro' handsets, the Y-Pro is of the QWERTY kind. Other details are sparse, so we suspect similar innards to the Y, just with a few features to make work life a bit easier, such as ThinkFree Office Mobile for editing Office docs and Wi-Fi Direct for faster transfer rates. The M-Pro, is of the 'Magical' QWERTY variety, designed to provide plenty of power, yet remain affordable. It's 1GHz processor, 5MP camera and 3MP front-facing camera are in mid-tier territory, while its enterprise solutions such as Exchange Active Sync and CISCO Mobile and WebEx ensures it has the business side of things covered. Last, but certainly not least is the Galaxy W. With its 3.7in, 480 x 800 pixel touchscreen, 1.4GHz chip, 14.4Mbps HSDPA and 5MP cam, it certainly boasts the most respectable specs. Chuck in Samsung's own Kies Air software for wirelessly moving music and movies on to the phone, Touchwiz and the Social Hub for plenty of Facebook and Twitter action and it becomes clear why the W sits at the higher end of the scale.
This recent announcement makes up the latest wave of Samsung flavoured Android smartphones, joining the likes of the Galaxy R and S Plus. There's no word on pricing or availability for the new Galaxy line-up, although Three has confirmed it will be flogging the W as soon as its released. We expect to know more when they're officially announced at IFA next week.
