One look at today's nominations for the 2013 Golden Globes tells you one thing: it's been a great year for cinema. Admittedly, the Best Picture list is somewhat predictable: Ben Affleck's Argo, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Ang Lee's Life Of Pi and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty - but unlike most years, there's no one clear favourite. There's not even two; it's that close.
In other categories, there's a much deserved Best Comedy/Musical shortlist for Moonrise Kingdom, although personally we'd be amazed is Tom Hooper's Les Misérables doesn't take it. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen's multiple nominations came as a surprise but it's good to see Joaquin Phoenix recognised for The Master, GQ cover star Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty and Jennifer Lawrence for The Silver Linings Playbook. Perhaps the closest category is for supporting actor, with the likes of Leo DiCaprio, Tommy Lee Jones and Philip Seymour Hoffman fighting it out.
But the biggest shocks came in the TV categories: nothing for Mad Men's superb fifth season, nor a single appearance for Game Of Thrones, but Jeff Daniels is shortlisted for The Newsroom. Expect Best Actor to again be a play off between Homeland's Damian Lewis and Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad. Personally, we're just hoping Ben Affleck's excellent Argo isn't orgotten in the inevitable post-Christmas Lincoln/Zero Dark Thirty face-off.
