Overlooked Films from 2012 That Deserve a Second Look

Pascal Laugier’s “The Tall Man” is a manipulative social drama
masquerading as your typical slasher/horror movie. The film starts in
one direction before taking a major detour, and then ditches
everything to pull the rug from under you. It’s highly dubious plotting
by Laugier, who also wrote the script, and is liable to piss off a lot
of people who had invested a lot of honest time hoping to get something,
well, honest back in return. If you can look pass that, though, “The
Tall Man” features an excellent performance from Jessica Biel, who
proves to be an incredibly talented actress. It’s too bad the film is
going to go mostly ignored, because unfortunately for Biel, she’s really
been typecast as either the “hot girlfriend” or the “kickass action
heroine” in big-budget Hollywood movies like the recent “Total Recall”.
She really can act, too. The middle section, when Biel’s character
pursues the titular Tall Man who has absconded with her child, is
seriously nail-biting intense, all of it held together by Biel’s acting.
