These days, the studios really like to keep their franchises hush-hush while they're in production. But when J.J. Abrams is involved, a movie is a black hole from which no secrets can escape... unless an actor makes a big mistake.
The sequel to "Star Trek" has been especially secretive throughout pre-production and subsequent stages, to the point where we didn't even know who the villain is, even though we know Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing him. But now, thanks to Karl Urban (who plays Bones), we know.
So if you don't want to know who the villain in "Star Trek 2" is going to be, stop reading now... there are spoilers ahead!
In an interview with SFX, Urban was singing the praises of Cumberbatch's performance. "He’s awesome,” Urban said of the "Sherlock" star. “He’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."
There you have it. Gary Mitchell is the name of Cumberbatch's character, and thus the main villain of the movie. That kills any Khan rumors (or desperate wishes), as Gary Mitchell is definitely not Khan. He is, however, the first true "Star Trek" villain from the very early episodes of the television series: Mitchell is a friend of Kirk's who develops superhuman abilities and proves to be a menace to the crew.
