"Puss in Boots" was the #1 movie over the typically soft weekend before Halloween, though it posted the lowest debut for a DreamWorks Animation movie since 2006's "Flushed Away." The 3-D "Shrek" spinoff, featuring the voice of Antonio Banderas in the title role, took in $34 million according to studio estimates. DreamWorks' similarly budgeted "Megamind" opened with $46 million last year. To be fair, "Puss" had to do battle with the World Series and East Coast snowstorms in addition to Halloween celebrations.
Johnny Depp's very personal "The Rum Diary," which he produced and starred in, was a bomb with just $5 million. Despite a Vanity Fair cover story, a Larry King interview and a slew of other press from the A-list star, Depp's adaptation of the late Hunter S. Thompson's semi-autobiographical novel failed to generate much heat. At press time it sat with a "rotten" 50 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
"The Rum Diary is a woozy mess that should never have made it to theaters. But then, it stars Johnny Depp, so it did," wrote Tom Long of The Detroit News.
Depp discovered the unpublished "Rum Diary" manuscript while staying with Thompson, whom he befriended during the making of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," which opened with $3.3 million and similarly mixed reviews in 1998.
Justin Timberlake's "In Time" was the other new wide release over the weekend. It opened at #3 on the box-office scorecard with an underwhelming $12 million, which is much less than Timberlake's "Friends With Benefits" and even co-star Amanda Seyfried's "Red Riding Hood."
The rest of the weekend's top five included last week's #1 movie, "Paranormal Activity 3," at #2 with $18.5 million for a $81.3 million total, and "Footloose" at #4 with $5.4 million for a $38.4 million total.
Next weekend's new releases include "A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas" and "Tower Heist," which features an ensemble cast led by Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy.
