Serena Williams has been fined $2,000 for a code violation for verbal abuse during her loss to Samantha Stosur in Sunday's U.S. Open final, the United States Tennis Association announced Monday.
Williams confronted chair umpire Eva Asderaki after Asderaki ruled Williams had hindered Stosur's ability to complete a point in Sunday's final by yelling "Come on!" as Stosur reached for a backhand. That penalty gave Stosur a 1-0 lead in the second set.
Williams went over to talk to Asderaki, saying, "I'm not giving her that game."
Williams also said: "Aren't you the one who screwed me over last time here? Do you have it out for me? That's totally not cool."
In 2009 at the U.S. Open, Williams launched a tirade at an official who cited her with a foot fault at a crucial point of her semifinal match against Kim Clijsters. Williasm was under probation because of that outburst.
Later, as her tirade escalated, Williams defended her right to vent, saying, "We're in America last time I checked." In a final jab, she called Asderaki "unattractive inside."
Williams also told the official: "Really, don't even look at me."
Asderaki issued Williams a code violation warning for verbal abuse. The USTA, however, decided that the incident didn't warrant a more serious infraction and fine.
"After independently reviewing the incident which served as the basis for the code violation, and taking into account the level of fine imposed by the U.S. Open referee, the Grand Slam Committee Director has determined that Ms. Williams' conduct, while verbally abusive, does not rise to the level of a major offense under the Grand Slam Code of Conduct," the USTA said.
The fine money will be given to a fund which helps develop tennis programs around the world.
