Janet Jackson, one of the biggest pop stars of the 1980s and ’90s, has been concentrating recently on movies and publishing her self-help book. Now, she will return to Minneapolis, where she recorded many of her biggest hits, for a concert Aug. 19 at the Orpheum Theatre as part of the Janet Jackson Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour.
While her late brother Michael Jackson will soon be on the arena circuit with a Cirque du Soleil show featuring his music, Janet has scaled back. She hasn’t released an album of new music since “Discipline” in 2008, and she hasn’t scored a Top 10 hit since 2001’s “All for You.” However, she starred in two Tyler Perry movies in 2010 and promoted her book, “True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself,” which made the New York Times bestseller list. She also released her second hits collection, “Number Ones,” featuring many of the tunes she recorded with Grammy-winning Minneapolis producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
Jackson last performed in the Twin Cities in 2001 at sold-out Target Center.
Tickets, priced from $67.50 to $199, will go on sale at noon Saturday at the State Theatre box office and via Ticketmaster outlets (1-800-982-2787.)
