As you may have heard, Prince William and Kate Middleton shall henceforth be known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Privately and amongst themselves, they will likely remain “Big Willie” and “Babykins,” as “Duchess Babykins” is slightly cumbersome.
According to The Guardian, the title of duke, given to the couple by the Queen, “links the couple to England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and is the highest rank in the British peerage.” William’s new titles also include the “Earl of Strathearn” and “Baron Carrickfergus”—the latter of which prompted amused grins and giggles among a few American news anchors covering this morning’s ceremony.
