Inexplicable results and mesmerizing performances mixed with the mundane added up to a generally unsatisfying evening for CBS Sunday. Unless, of course, you're Lady Antebellum.
The opening Aretha Franklin tribute continued Christina Aguilera's lousy month. Unlike her four collaborators, she seemed intent on making the moment more about her, losing the song in the process. By the way what's with the decorated mike stand????????
Country trio Lady Antebellum and Canadian rock band Arcade Fire lit up the Grammy Awards on Sunday, winning key prizes in a ceremony packed with upset victories and a humiliating setback for Eminem.
The hip-hop star, who led the field with 10 nominations and had been expected to dominate the ceremony, ended up with just two awards in the rap field.
Eminem also lost the key race for song of the year to country trio Lady Antebellum's Need You Now, whose haul for the event rose to four. Gaga and Jay Z also beat him along the way.
In a major Grammys upset, American singer/bassist Esperanza Spalding was named best new artist on Sunday, beating favored contenders Drake and Justin Bieber. The teen heartthrob Bieber, performed a varied set, but lost both his races in a likely blow to millions of young girls worldwide.
Spalding, 26, was the first jazz artist nominated for best new artist in 35 years. But she is not exactly a newcomer, having released her breakthrough album in 2008. “I take this honor to heart so sincerely and I'll do my damnedest to do a lot of great music for all of you”, Spalding said.
CEE Lo Green, dressed in multicoloured feathers and a Roman breastplate, was accompanied by Gwyneth Paltrow and had the Muppets as his backing band, but his performance of hit single Forget You (the cleaned-up version of F--- You) at the 53rd Grammy Awards was overshadowed by serial show-stopper Lady Gaga - before she'd even entered the theatre.
Lady Gaga had the censors reaching for the mute button after she exclaimed, Oh, s---! when she accepted her third award, for best pop vocal album. Lady GaGa showed up inside an egg shell during the red carpet of 2011 Grammy Awards but the bizarre outfit made sense once she performed on the stage. Singing live for the first time her new single, Lady GaGa gave a meaning to "Born This Way" by hatching from the egg, "this way".
She wore a see-through yolk-ish yellow costume which was topped with Star Trek sleeves, TV-friendly nipple pastie; black lipsticks and Ginny-like hairstyle.

Grammy voters been definitely smitten with another Lady ; Lady Antebellum. The country trio took home five trophies tonight — the most of any artist — including song of the year. Back in the press room, they stayed as humble as they discussed the inspiration behind their songs, their group name, and what their success means to them.
Arcade Fire denied Lady Antebellum a clean sweep by winning the event's top prize, album of the year. In a year dominated by pop, R&B and hip-hop acts, few pundits had given the defiantly independent Montreal band any chance of taking the top prize. Moreover, the band lost two earlier races.
They were so shocked to hear their name called by presenter Barbra Streisand that they delivered an unscheduled performance to close the show.
